I came here for tent city! It sucked! They feed you moldy oranges, old bread and some weird blueberry jam that everyone was using to dye their hair. The people working here were pretty rude even considering it's a jail. Definitely try to get arrested in Mesa or Scottsdale because they have better jails with nicer people working there & better food. first time calls never go through even after putting in my card information. it hangs up and still charges me. there customer call service also dont help and hang up on you for no reason. my experience.. they don't take any responsibility for their services. If you're visiting you should know the inmates booking number and the only things you can bring with you are a key and an ID. Also, visiting is over a black and white monitor and phone, no more in person visits. The ideal candidate for a job with the jail is highly insecure. The MSCO remedies this insecurity by giving them a badge on their uniform and control over a small population of people who have already been stripped of any rights or privileges- basically powerless. When you give sad people like that any kind of power, they automatically abuse it because they don't get any respect in their pathetic real lives. Unfortunately, when you visit someone in jail, you have to interact with these mental midgets. I've been here to visit someone and they didn't know if they could accept a passport as acceptable identification. A group of them had to huddle together and weigh in on it before they decided a government issued identification was acceptable. Another time I came, they said they couldn't let me in because they couldn't find me in their "system" which I thought was a good thing. Most recently though, the Chaplin made a special arrangement for me to see my brother in person when our father passed away. I didn't ask, he offered. On my way to the jail I prepared myself for some type of hullabaloo with the dum dums running the visitors station. Sure enough, as soon as I told them the Chaplin sent me they informed me that the Chaplin doesn't run the Maricopa county sheriffs office. I reminded him that I never suggested anything as ridiculous as the Chaplin running the sheriffs office but merely that he called me and told me to come see my brother. After about 20 minutes of talking as slow as possible to 5 different detention officers, I gave up and walked out. I had to self-surrender a couple weeks ago. I got 2 days for a DUI. That part was fine. I turned myself in at 6 pm and only had to do 12 hrs. The holding cells where absolutely disgusting. There was chunks of puke on the wall, toilets where absolutely gross and the sink is where they said you could get a drink of water in which that was absolutely gross. No wonder they had an outbreak of hep A recently. Make sure you bring your 2 towels. One will be what you lay under you and the other will be a blanket. I self-surrendered on Friday at 8pm. The first impression was from three kids ( DO's), probably in their early 20's. All were respectful but you can feel the underlying sense of superiority. Nevertheless, they were pleasant. Then the medical evaluation. The nurse, sounded like he was from New York or Jersey. Nice enough but was already questioning my paper work. I informed him my papers were in order and then he was agreeable. The holding tanks are ridden with human waste and mold. No wonder the DOJ investigated this jail and no surprise this jail was subject to federal oversight. Granted, Joe Arpaio is a spineless racist and he framed the culture of the MCSO. Penzone has done a pretty good job of restoring order and civility to the jail. Durango jail is filthy and reeks of MRSA and Staph. Estrella is somewhat reasonable. The work release program is quite nice and provides an under appreciated amount of humanity and is humane in its treatment of inmates. The Captain or Sergeant, with her neck tattoos and flippant assessment of inmates is a little much. She tries to be cool, but it comes off as desperate and thirsty. All in all, DO Cole and his mates are the best of the bunch. The rest are seemingly trying to be something they are not: professional and competent. Jail is jail. It's not supposed to be fun or reasonable. However, the leadership of any state run organization should be measured in how it treats its inmates and how it protects its staff. MCSO is like a fly on wax paper....it's there for a reason but it is stuck in it the apathy and ignorance of it's glue. read more

Hell . I watched a girl in f dorm stab herself in the neck repeatedly in the showers and I'm pretty sure she died . They left blood just feet away from are beds for hours untill some people in hazmat suits could come take pictures . Your starving all day . Bread at 10am. And food well supposed to be food that comes in the evening that I can't even eat. So again starving . There is garbage trash and bodily fluids almost every where you turn . It's inhuman and wrong to treat people the way they do . Anyone saying it was fun or not bad is a bitch ass liar and hasn't been there , or got some special treatment I wasn't able to have available. This review is only applicable for people on a 1 day sentence... I've not had the opportunity to be a long term resident. I was sentenced one day for reckless driving. If you are about to have to do this, don't sweat it. Yeah it sucks, but you can handle it. First, you need to go in at night, like schedule your time for 9 or 10 pm. This is really important. If you do this you will most likely be released early the next morning. I got there at 10pm and was completely out by 9am, but I have heard people have gotten out as early as 3 or 4am. If you report there in the morning, you WILL be there all day and into the next morning. I have heard opinions on what day of the week to go in, most say you could be in there longer if you go on a weekend because they're trying to process more people, but if you go on a slow day they could be in no hurry to get you out of there. I went on a Thursday which was recommended by my attorney and I was out in 11 hours. The day of the week is probably kind of a toss up because it depends on how many people they are getting in from downtown and processing to court. Another important reminder, don't forget to bring a towel! You will not be showering, but this will give you something to sit on softer than cement. You are allowed to bring 2 towels. After finger prints, mugshot, medical questions, and some signatures, you'll be moved to a cell. You will be in a 'tank' or medium sized cell for the duration of your stay. It consists of two long concrete benches and a jail toilet. You will not be processed into the tents on a one-day sentence. Your cell mates will be people doing the same thing as you, or people being processed in and out of the system. There is a fairly large population of guards and a lot of people being moved from cell to cell all night, so I don't think anyone's going to fuck with you in here. I mean if you're a real dick you're probably going to get your ass kicked, but then I'm sure you're used to it by now. You may get moved once or twice to different cells. Don't let moving get your hopes up that you're about to get out. They're just reorganizing. I would definitely eat before, but not something that will make you have to use the shitter. Hydrate because the water tastes like ass, and in my cell only the hot water worked. So anyway, bring a book, a watch, a towel, and be mentally prepared to just sit and wait. I was sentenced to 48 hours for singing too loud in church. I got there on Friday night ready to pay my debt to society but I wasn't ready for what found waiting for me. I approached the line and was immediately jammed up by a few guys who looked like they were no good ruffians. They said, "Right then, okay...what race are you?" I thought it was pretty obvious that I am a white man but I guess they were trying to see if I'd waiver. I said, "I'm white, and what of it govnor?" The larger of the two men said, "Well alright then...brother. Let's see what you've got!" I was given a homemade weapon and told in no uncertain terms that I was going to have to put in some work in order to make my bones. Obviously the inmate code prevents me from elaborating about what took place, but let's just say that 48 hours later I emerged from the jail's exit door a sadder and wiser man, now heavily tattooed and sporting a fresh teardrop tattoo under my right eye. Why review a jail you might want to say, well cause there are so many things that are just not okay. Like for example, your cell phone is no good, DOs won't let you bring it in, though you wish you could. Be careful with belts, watches and all your bling, Off they will come if you set off that metal detector thing. Also, don't expect to see your loved one face to face, You can see them at other jails, just not at this place. You only get 30 minutes to visit which could be okay but you only get to go on Sunday or Monday. You should also expect delays and even shortened visits, mostly because DOs can't tell time or count minutes. Sometimes you wonder and think: Only 30 minutes in a single week? Doesn't the MSCO know they have people in there? that we still love and hold dear? Well, 30 minutes is gone in no time at all especially in that cramped little video stall. Some might deserve being wrung through the system, but others are young, sweet and we missed them. Basic human rights of dignity and nutrition are often over looked for the inmates of this institution. I wish I had better things to say for those that go, but there's not much good that comes from Sheriff Joe. Depending on when you go in which I recommend the later the better especially if you only doing 1-2 days cause most likely you'll be released as of midnight after you get there especially if you go in on a Friday night. This is the only jail I've ever been to, and I was only there for like 12 hours.. staff was friendly, but that's not the reason for the poor review. I spent my entire time in the drunk tank, so I can't say for the rest of the prison. But it was boring, and filthy. Like literally vommit on the walls, spit wads of toilet paper to cover the air vents, because they keep it a cool -70 degrees. Suggestions, would be maybe install one of those flat screen tvs and run that chive tv all day. Then I might come by again, oh and clean up a bit. read more

I served time for 1 day in jail for a DUI. i self surrendered at 8pm friday. i was supposed to get out at 8am but apparently i had a warrant out for a charge that the system didn't wanna charge me for UNTIL I GOT TO JAIL. the staff there was not nice and had no protocol of anything. these staff members kept ignoring me and my cell mate for an hour and she has epilepsy and had to take her meds or she would seize. they literally lost her pills TWICE. don't really know why they wouldn't take something like that seriously. but i guess it's not a priority to ensure she is healthy and ok lollll. it was freezing and they put me in a cell where there was poop on the ceiling, walls and floor! disgusting and super unsanitary. staff is rude and i absolutely hate it there! don't get a dui!!! read more

I had to go self-surrender for a first time DUI. I read all the yelp reviews prior to going in. You are going to make it. It's uncomfortable as hell but ultimately not that egregious. Do yourself a HUGE FAVOR and bring the two towels and book you are allowed. You will be in a small holding cell with bunches of other people. It WILL BE CROWDED. You will need the towels for cushion against the cement floor or bench. I dressed for winter as I read it was freezing inside. It did get cold in the wee hours of the morning. I went in at 11 PM and was released at 8:30 AM the following morning. They gave us disgusting food. Eat prior to going in or not at all. The guards were a mixed bag- mostly just regular people doing a job. The "criminals" you will be grouped with did the same thing you did. I heard lots about people being released early in the morning. They DONT LET WOMEN GO ANYMORE IN THE EARLY MORNING. They generally release around eight AM. Good Luck! read more

If you go, please leave a review here afterwards! If you spend any time here at all, people look at you as less than them. Read the google reviews of this place that say "jail is supposed to be tough" or "if you do the crime, do the time" or other comments along those lines. Most people that end up here are at the lowest point in their lives and as primates, it feels good to shit on people worse off than you. I recently self-surrendered there for a 24 hour (not the same as 1 day which can be shorter than 24hrs) sentence, so my review is mostly relevant for those. I read all of the reviews here before I went and they were super helpful and accurate. Zac B's review stands out as the best I think, but they're all pretty good. Things you should know: The only situation in which you get out when you're supposed to is if your confinement order says "1 day". In that case, you'll probably get out early if you go in at night. If, like me, you have an exact time you are supposed to get out (like if you're on a 24 or 48 hour sentence), add anywhere from 30 min to 24 hours to it. They have a right to hold you an additional 24 hours by law pretty much for any reason, and they will. They will say the sergeant has to come sign you out, which is true. But he's going to drag his feet, especially if you're supposed to get out around feeding time. They may seem polite, but only because they've been sued a lot. They are fighting their nature to treat you like crap to cover themselves legally. They will screw you in anyway they legally can, just out of schadenfreude and conformity to social pressure. They don't consider you human like them. If you are in for 24 hours or more, you are entitled to at least 2 hours on a cot/mattress. I never got one, you're not going to sleep anyway, its too bright and loud. Food time is every 12 hours. its usually around 6am and 6pm, maybe before or after. This is important for you and when you get out because they get paid for every food sack they hand out, so they want you to be there to receive one. I was supposed to get out at 5pm, and was held til 6:30 which was conveniently right after food came around again. It's a health crisis in there. Arrange to be able to shower and change clothes immediately when you get out. You will feel disgusting and will probably be sick. If you are self surrendering for 24-48 hours bring a watch, the guards will lie about the time. Also bring 2 towels, not one. Bring a paperback book or magazine. I brought a Nat Geo, because it appeals to a wider audience and I knew I would be sharing. Bundle up, but be prepared to take things off if it gets hot. You cant wear hoods, but try to wear something extra that you can take off and cover your eyes with if you'll want to try to sleep. Helps to know the process, so mine was a little like this. - Got there at 4:01 right as the door was closing so I had to wait outside for an hour. I had a car with AC, so not a big deal for me, but most people that end up here are probably not as well off as I was. - Once in the door, they'll pat you down outside, but not very thoroughly. They wont check your bum ;) Then, you get inside and they take your temp and blood pressure, ask you a few questions about addictions and medical history. If you have any special medical anything, they may give you some grief. I didn't, but one guy was on heart medication, so he had to go back to the judge and get his sentence split, so his plans were shot and he wasted a couple days. - Then you go to a holding cell or maybe fingerprinting first. I did fingerprints first and then went to the holding cell where some others were waiting for their prints. After a while, they'll move you to the "getting out soon cell" where you'll wait to have your fingerprints taken again on the way out. - Food is every 12 hours. You get a small wheat loaf of bread, gross peanut butter (how can you screw up PB? idk, but they do), a red apple, a 4-pack of cookies in a variety of flavors, and 1 packet of nasty jelly with no actual fruit in it. The lemon cookies are the best, shiv someone and take theirs if you get stuck with banana flavor. - Everyone is going to share their story, best to be calm and (mostly) honest with people. Don't tell people you have a car parked outside, you will get asked for a ride. Just be cool and you'll be fine. You probably don't have to worry about the other inmates, they're just people like you and most of them are cool. The guards will misdirect you, screw up your paperwork or lie to you or just ignore you. That's when they're not busy choking people for not walking fast enough (that happened while I was there). read more

DO NOT LISTEN TO A THING BELOW. I just completed this and they must have changed everything. First off the facility is extremely clean. Do not bring two fluffy towels lol don't bring a watch, your cell phone or even a book. You will not be put in the drunk tank and will spend the majority of your time in the initial room. It's shaped like an airplane with chairs stacked 4x4 with about 25 rows. Most of the people you will be with are just like you, normal people for the most part. Most likely they've made a mistake and for a DUI/DWI like the majority of us writing on here. Try to make friends as this is the only way to pass the time, and try to SLEEP in there if you can. I couldn't but some were able to take short naps and Staff is very friendly but don't ask questions as you will just annoy them. 2 guards will babysit you in that room for about 10 hours. After that you will be scanned and taken into the actual jail where you will be moved from room to room where you get processed for different things. Be prepared to sit for a very very long time and as I said earlier If you weren't able to sleep in the initial room there so shot at sleeping in any of the others as they will yell at you if you try to lay down or take up more seats. I think the size of your group will depend on how long your there because they do TONS of paperwork. They could most likely get you out much faster but they intentionally take their time and make you wait so you will need a lot of patience. The final part is the worst part as you will sit and wait and sit and wait to be processed our. Expect this to be at least 3-4 hours. Heck, I would say expect to be in each new room 3/4 hours and this is after the ten you will do in a he initial room. The first person out was gone in about 15 hours and the last person was 18 hours so expect to be here for at least 16 which is nice for the people with 2 day sentences because it's the same exact thing as 1 day. It's odd that the ppl with one day get the same as a repeat offendeor a 2 day'er. Regardless, If you're nervous don't be unless you have other warrants lol. Do your best to make friends and talk to make time pass. Aside from that you will get one meal which was bread, peanut butter, and a bag of crackers with no drink lol. For a jail restrooms are quite sanitary. Just do your best to get it over with. If any of you have questions please ask. THERES NO VENDING MACHINES, NO PHONES TO MAKE CALLS, NO MEAN OR ABUSIVE GUARDS "I found them all to be really friendly" at the end of the day they just don't want to be distracted and want to get their paperwork done. DONT ACT UP AS THEY WILL PULL YOU OUT ANS LOCK YOU UP IN A CELL. I saw this happen to a guy in my group and he's most likely still in there now haha! Finally men and women will be together for the most part but are just on opposite sides of each room. I hope this helps anyone looking for real advice. It's going to suck a bit but we did make a mistake and drive under the influence. This for sure will make you never want to do it again. It's like being stuck on a airplane waiting to taxi for about 18 hours that's my best example. Finally, the only thing I personally had a issue with was how slow the officers work and really do thing the process can be much more efficient but I think this may be intentional. I probably had one of the most unique experiences here. I was due to go in to self surrender for 3 days. Me being dumb I looked at the wrong location to go to online on their website. Strangely enough was the same day they were bringing in volunteers to try out this other location for self surrenderers. They didn't notice at first that I wasn't a volunteer. I had to awkwardly tell them I was in the wrong place about half way through their little volunteer skit that they were doing. I was walked out, got provided good food that wasn't typical jail food, and they waited with me for my boyfriend to come back so I can drop my stuff of with him before I officially went in. The staff gave me back a ride to the correct location. I am officially the first self surrenderer that experienced the new location. Afterwards inside it was normal. Tried making jokes with staff and actually got some giggles out of them. Glad to be out though. Overall I'll give the staff 10/10. One night stay in jail? No sweat! I was out in 6 1/2 hours. Here are some notes about my experience after getting my first DUI (slightest degree), which required me staying In jail for 10 days, 9 of which were suspended, meaning I needed to spend ONE day in jail. One day to the jail is to be booked through the end of a 12 hour window (either noon to midnight or vice versa). Don't quote me on that but you'll understand my point of view shortly. I was to spend a day in jail so I thought I would go through self-surrender early in the morning to get out early the next day. I was informed by experiences others to go in late at night instead. I contacted the court (which will cost you $25 to change your incarceration date! - just one more fee...), changed my time to 10pm self surrender and went in that night. When arriving, drive yourself if you can afford to (meaning my girlfriend and I share a car but she could survive if I ended up being stuck in jail for 24 full hours so I drove myself). There is free parking right outside the self surrender area. Park yourself, leave all other keys in your car. That way you don't need to give anything up, you can keep it all with you through your stay. Just stand outside the giant door that says self surrender. They'll come and get you. Take an ID, a paperback book or magazine, and your car key in with you. It gets chilly once you're in the concrete jail for a good amount of time. I wore sweatpants over basketball shorts (in case I got warm) and a t-shirt with a light thermal over top of it and I was fine all evening. Actually took the thermal off and used it as a pillow to get some sleep. It took about half an hour standing in a room while they did a medical questionnaire with the med staff, got my fingerprints and mug shots taken, got my "Jail ID" and was then taken to the holding cell. It was probably 20' by 10' with two wall length concrete benches, one side shorter to accommodate a walled off toilet/sink in the back corner. The people you are with are either other one nighters or people that have served their sentence and are on their way out. Most people will be in pretty good spirits but if you're nervous just take a book and keep you nose in it. IF YOU BRING A BOOK, make it a non novel, something with short chapters or easy stop and go reading, as it's hard to focus with the relentless fluorescent light and talkative inmates. Anyway, once I was booked and midnight came, the county got paid for having me as an inmate for 'the day' (2 12 hour periods) as I was incarcerated for the 18th from 9pm-11:59am and the 19th from 12am-3:30am, a portion of each counts as all for their purposes. Once midnight came, they started processing people out. I was re-fingerprinted and moved around to a few more cells but then it was over. You get asked some identifying questions by the sergeant and then you're released. DO NOT GET IN YOUR HEAD ABOUT THIS. It will be over before you know it. In summation: -Reading material: bring a short chapter book, a funny quote book, book of lists, magazine etc -Personal Belongings: nothing besides clothes on your back, a jacket, single car key and one paper back book or magazine -Time of surrender: GO IN AT NIGHT or spend unnecessary time in a jail cell -Interaction: Keep an open mind. You won't be placed with anyone dangerous, but with people on their way out so they will be on their best behavior (mostly) so they can get out of jail. -Behavior: Listen intently when the officers speak and speak clearly when you speak. They deal with ignorant people all day and usually will have no patience for BS If you have any other questions or concerns, ask around, do some research, but take everything with a grain of salt. Yes, 4 stars.. lol. Ok, so if your doing one day for a DUI don't fret. The officers are very nice here. My experience being female they put me in with other females in a holding cell. Bring your two towels that they allow. Bring your wrist watch so you know what time it is. Bring a book. That's all you will need. Layer up because it is cold in the holding cell. I wore long johns under my clothes with tennis shoes. Be very polite to the guards. I was out in 3 hours. They don't want you in jail. Don't bother the officers like a child on a car trip wondering if we are there yet with getting out. You will be fine. I ended up getting a ride there and plenty of taxis are waiting for you to get out. Also, Make sure you go to the right entrance. I went to the entrance with the address on the building near the round about. That's not right, you need to go to the east end of the building. There will be a huge door for the MCSO busses and a smaller door to the left of the bus doors to let you in. They let you in every hour on the hour. There will be  blue benches and  2 payphones near vending machines under a ramada. I repeat It's not bad so don't fret! Good luck.... read more

Giving a place such as this a good review seems really strange, however the staff were great so they really deserve it. They don't treat you like crap which is saying a lot as far as facilities such as this goes. I mostly just have some tips for fellow readers and people who have a sentence to fulfill. First off, this is a men's facility. Be prepared for some truly ignorant passes whenever they walk by or vice versa. Second, bring 2 LARGE towels with some cushion to them to lay on or under and one for a pillow. If you are serving a 24 hour/1 day/2 day sentence you will not make it to the tents and you will be cold and uncomfortable on a cement bench for your stay. 2 day sentences and 48 hour sentences are different. 48 hour sentences are exactly as they sound, 2 day you are out by the next day. Eat before you get there, you will only get a little loaf of stale bread, prison made peanut butter, mystery jelly, old oranges and pretty tasty little cookies. Get there in the evening. Anything before midnight still counts as a day. Bring a watch or a clock. You will have no other way of telling what time it is. Layer your clothing, it's cold. Bring a book or you will be bored out of your mind. When you're in the waiting tank, take an extra cup and the pencil they give you with you to the next cell. The holding cell water has very low pressure and you will be thirsty. Bring quarters if you need to phone a ride or drive yourself or you'll be paying cash only for an expensive taxi ride home. Well, in for a DUI. Never been in trouble before. Check in for self surrender between 6 and 9p if a 3 dayer & 8 - 10p if a 1 dayer- be sure your court docs say that at sentencing. Your 1st shock into reality is being told to turn around, face the wall and get frisked. After that, gaining entrance... If in for DUI, bring 2 towels, large soft cover book and keys/ID in clear plastic bag. They dont want your cell phone or weapons or cigarettes (wear a patch to help!), so leave phone in the car or bring change for a payphone call. Check in is ridiculously unorganized - they need to learn the concept of the "assembly line" for more efficiency. Women, prepare to get a pregnancy test and everyone prepare for a blood pressure test - which you'll likely fail if you are stressed about being there! The holding rooms are absolutely disgusting! Vents are filthy, toilets are the stuff of nightmares and the concrete floors and benches are rock hard. Dress warm! As broke as the county is, they keep these 20,000 sf buildings at 60 degrees! If you think they are doing it to keep cooties out, take another look at the the toilet! People have graffiti and wet tissue all over. Lay down and look at the ceiling and imagine you are deciphering cloud shapes haha. The DUI groups are your everyday friendly folks who screwed up like you and you will likely have some great conversation. But sometimes they throw the scary ones in there.( If you are staying for "48 hours" or "3 days", be prepared to bus over to Durango, which is much cleaner, is a dorm like setting with professional staff, friendly detainees, books and vending machines - bring quarters and dollars. The top bunk is ridiculous to climb up to! Also be ready to be cuffed AND chained to and from - we are all treated the same: murderer, thief or drunk driver. Lovely experience for the first timer!). The breakfast at all the jails is decent: peanut butter, roll, fruit & cookies. Dinner is disgusting: the guards even call it "slop" like it is some sarcastic joke to the detainees. No flavor soy product with beans and mystery vegees, cheap sides. Served EVERY NIGHT! Sooo much food waste goes on - taxpayers enjoy! In any case, you will leave these places at all hours of the night and feel like your body has been pummeled from the hard surface, harsh lights & lack of sleep in these holding cells. LBJ guards are decent for the most part - I am sure they have to deal with a variety of society so give them some credit and be polite. Trust me when I say, you do NOT want to be a repeat offender!
