Ask the Community - Lower Buckeye Jail

Does Estrella jail still do two for ones if u work in jail when u r sentenced ?like if I have 60 days to do and I work in jail can I get out in 30 days if I work?

No, you won't be anywhere near eligible to work until you've already done 30 days and move to a privileged dorm, and even then you won't be able to reduce your sentencing, unless you file a motion for early release.… Read more

Hello im scheduled to self surrender on the 17th of November however im not a resident and I just want to know if ice will most likely pick me up after booking? Does anyone know if there is ice at the lower buckeye facility?

No, ICE no longer operates in the Maricopa County jail system. However, if you are in the US without legal status you should either return to a country where you do have legal status OR you should surrender to US ICE as soon as possible. It’s the… Read more

Do they breathalyze you when you self surrender?

No, the only reason you'd be breathalyzed is if you are going for DUI

So if I have 2 days and go in at 10 am Thursday when will I get out?

What time did you get out?

Im going to self surrender for 1 day beginning at 8pm, is that a full 24 hours or will I be released at 8am?

Yes, it's crazy but 2 days is check in Fri evening and out Saturday morning (Fri, sat, those are 2 days, nowhere does it say hours.) My experience. But guards can be mean and keep 2 Sayers til Sunday morning I think. Basically it's a flash.

I need the 411 on how work furlough works here. What time can you be released for work? When do you comeback? They change you out on the weekends when not going to work or do you wear your own clothes? You're allowed items inside?!?!? Like what?

Not sure when you posted but they suspended work release over a year ago due to Covid.

I'm going to self surrender on work release. Are men and women mixed together in jail?

    No they are separated

I know you cannot use the phone while there but can you bring a Phone and will they hold onto it for you?

No you can't bring it inside at all.

Can I just show up and visit?

Only Sunday and Monday visitation from 8 am - 8 pm

Can you wear earrings if your going for just the one day?

No, no jewelry at all, or hair bands.

When you self surrender for 2 days do they dress you down into their clothes or do you wear your clothes?

For 2 days 1 night I had to change into orange jumpsuit. It was crazy, takes so long lol.

What is it like for a first time offender in county jail for driving with suspended license?

MCSO jails suck. If you are healthy, you will be sick or bruised when you come out. They do not value LIFE at all!!!! I almost believe they like to see people sugar bad. CHS is the most malpracticing company ever. You get one RN who crushes a drug… Read more

That's the best example in can give. What needs to improve?.....Everything. Staff retraining, medical staff screened, dietary review, program coordinating. The pod I was on was over 120 girls on bunk beds in one room. There where fruit flies all times of the day covering the toilets, vents, drains, and bunk beds. The issue or black mold exposure is real and putting women at risk for sure. Eight showers in one room, eight toilets in another, and that's where flash backs or Hitler documentaries and concentration camps flash before my eyes.. No curtains or doors,no privacy. You eat on your bunk, live on your bunk, during my week stay we never even were given the option of an hour of reck time for fresh air even once. There are no programs available besides GED except in your tablet which I couldn't take advantage of because I was never provided headphones even though I wrote multiple requests for them. Medical treatment is scary here, I watched many women become sickly during my stay, symptoms not taken seriously, illnesses being overlooked. The way the staff address the inmates is constantly demeaning and ignorant, in could go as far as say almost as inhumane as what were served every night for dinner.. That's the biggest difference I recognized between this jail and corp civic in Florence. I can't believe it was acceptable to staff to crack jokes on inmates for missing teeth, being overweight, or struggling from withdrawal. It's was just a big joke to the officers, everything was. You have to do chores to get a clean outfit...leaving withdrawing women without a blanket or sheet and in the same soiled clothes even after begging for help. You are fed twice a day,the same meal every day is served for both breakfast and dinner; I pray for the women who have been sitting in county for years. If most of the women in here either struggle with mental issues or addiction I don't see how sentencing someone to experience a situation like this can help them to improve their lifestyle or become a better functioning member of society.

Also, be sure to have the booking number for your person. When I was first introduced to the "systemic" processes involved in incarceration, Intake Transfer and Release (ITR) wasn't even a thing. I'm sure in some ways, it has streamlined aspects of booking and release. For example, if someone is processed, they'll likely be released through ITR. It's also evidently where you go to collect an inmate's property--if the "tank order" has been properly submitted. Although not the same place to pick up property for someone who is no longer in custody. That's a big if, especially given the ongoing staffing shortages. Delays are common, and miscommunication is rampant. Yes, public parking is located in the pickup lot, even for property retrieval. Security staff were kind and helpful, but the Detention Officers (DOs) assisting with property seemed understandably frustrated with the process. When I visited, they told me they hadn't received the tank order that had supposedly been submitted the previous week. I asked for clarification and got little more than a shrug. The MCSO website states the public must bring the tank order to property pickup--but according to staff, that's outdated information. Something felt off, so I went to the jail myself to retrieve the tank order. When I returned to ITR with it, a more informed DO finally explained what had happened. Here's the thing--not every inmate is a repeat offender who understands this complex, often contradictory system. My loved one is a first-time detainee with no knowledge of these procedures. In this case, confusion was made worse by the fact that he was immediately placed under a 72-hour watch and never informed that he could release cash in his possession to an outside party. There's a 24-hour window to do this--but if you're under watch and no one tells you, how would you know? According to a supervising DO, many staff members are new and still learning the process themselves. Unfortunately, this leads to inconsistent information being given to the public--often confidently, but incorrectly. In my experience, some DOs would rather pass on misinformation than admit they're unsure or ask someone more knowledgeable. This creates a troubling cycle: inaccurate information is passed down and repeated until someone takes the time to correct it--if ever. Bottom line: ITR is one of those places no one wants to be, but you might find yourself needing to go there anyway. If you do, be patient, double-check everything, and trust your gut when something feels off. You may have to advocate harder than seems reasonable--but you're not alone in that.

I know how that statement may make some feel and trust I do have familiarity with what the process is like. However, both days the Detention Officer (DO) who assisted me was extremely helpful. She didn't have to be, but she was and it was noticed and appreciated. I had a few issues in obtaining the property of an inmate, it was the DO who helped that made the process a little smoother on my end. Again, of course, no one is happy in having to deal with these types of 'businesses' but it certainly helps alleviate some of the stress when those involved are helpful, as was my instance two days in a row. Thank you Lady, I was finally able to get the items. Sure hope to never be back again, ever.

Most of the staff were rude and the rooms weren't to my standards. The mattresses were thin and worn out and forget about housekeeping, there was none. None of the rooms had a tv but there was one in the lobby. It must have been broken because it was stuck on Disney channel all the time. They served two continental meals and one hot meal per day, I've had better. Most of the other guests were friendly and had some interesting stories to tell. I do not think I will be visiting this resort again in the future.

We used Durango when we were foster parents. We also used to gain permanent guardianship two different times and adopt our two daughters. We also used the court to adopt our foreign exchange student from China. So yes they do international adoptions as well! The 3rd floor has a office that can provide you with guardianship paperwork. Sometimes it is free sometimes they charge so have cash on hand. I am pretty savvy so we didn't need a lawyer. One was appointed to us by the state since the parent was wanting us to adopt and had filled out all necessary paperwork. Commitioners run the benches. Ask ahead those commissioners who have a kind rep and you can request them for your family case. In college I sat in on a lot of cases here for a class for 3 months and found the commissioners to be no nonsense yet full of grace. They really give a lot of chances in many cases until they see repetitive behavior. Then they start giving more severe consequences. They will even request behavioral health evaluations for those who are repeat offenders to make sure mental health isn't a factor getting more help for them. Sometimes commissioners can be not as gifted in family court as they are with criminal cases. You can always request another commissioner. They do sometimes have surveys. You can also talk with front desk about giving feedback as well. I found this facility to be full of caring people who really care about juveniles and families. They taught me a lot about when I was young not to be judgy and to be kind, even when it is difficult. Make sure you have all necessary paperwork filled out correctly. There are fees when filing the paperwork you will pay that are minimal.
