Where do I begin.... This is not the place you want to be. I self surrendered for 6 days and it was the longest 6 days of my life.
Work release and work furlough have been removed since covid and they wont be getting that back anytime soon-let alone ever.
I self surrendered on a Thursday at 11 a.m. at Lower Buckeye Jail. To be processed into Jail takes an extremely long time just a heads up. It took me exactly 15 hours till I got to my designated dorm room/facility. Once you are changed into your orange outfits. You get transported on a bus to the woman's jail which is called Estrella.
Everything has been updated and changed since covid. So they don't allow you to bring beach towels, books, cash, nothing like that except your medications. Make sure your medications come in the original bottle from the pharmacy with your name on it or they wont accept it.
They do allow collect calls or if you have a family member/friend that put money on your books, you can talk on the phone.m No more than 20 minutes at a time though. I made the mistake of leaving the list of phone numbers I needed in my other change of clothes so I couldn't get a hold of anyone to put money on my books. The reason you want money on your books is because they hand out tablets at certain parts of the day if the DO allows it. On the tablet you can watch movies, make calls, and use a messaging app to keep in touch with people. Again, you can't watch the movies or use the messaging app without money on your books. Someone in your family or a friend will need to go on the jail website, find your booking number, then put money on that way. You also need to do the same for when making collect calls. You get a small mattress to put on your bed, you get 2 hand towels to shower with, 1 night gown, 1 pair of pink socks, 2 pairs of underwear, 1 pair of sandals, 1 bra, and you get to change your clothes out once a week. I recommend changing out of your orange shirt/pants while sleeping and into your nightgown because you can sweat at night, and your clothes start to smell, especially without having any deoderant. You also get 1 small toothbrush, toothtaste, headphones (for the tablet), and a small comb. Once a week they allow you to order Canteen which is where you can order hygene products and some snacks. I didn't get the chance to since I was there for only 6 days but if you are there longer, you definitely want money on your books for that as well. You can order up to $100 worth of things for canteen at a time. My dorm had up to 140 girls and the beds are all bunk bed style, going from bottom, middle, then third level. I was on the bottom level which wasn't bad except sometimes girls will look on your bunk for extra food if you save any. Luckily I didn't have that problem but a lot of other girls did. Just to warn you they don't feed you a lot at all. I lost weight just being there for 6 days. The best breakfast I got was a tiny bag of rice crispy cereal with some milk and an orange. Other than that the other breakfast/lunch you would get is 1 tiny roll, soy peanut butter, a tiny packet of jelly, an orange, and 1 pack of cookies that had only had 2 cookies in the pack. If you ever want to trade food with someone you can but make sure you have something to offer back or you'll owe someone. For dinner you would get the same thing (roll with soy peanut butter) or you would get something called slop. Not how to describe it other than its the most disgusting thing I've had in my life. They serve slop with the most dry rice I've ever had along with disgusting veggies. You feel like you are being starved so it gets to the point where you have to force yourself to eat. Make sure to be respectful to the other girls, keep your mouth shut, and don't get on the DO (officers) bad side. They are tough woman who will give you a hard time if you give them a reason to. You will go on lock down multiple times a day which is where you go on your bunk and you shut your mouth or you'll get in trouble. There are only 8 showers, and the officers will usually allow showers anytime after 10 am but its hard to find the right time since everyone wants to shower. The showers are warm for the most part and they are open so be prepared to be starred at. Lights are off every night by 11 and are usually woken up by 6 for a head count. The officers do multiple head counts to make sure all inmates are there. There is a bathroom area and those are open as well. There were 8 toilets in my dorm as well.
Some tricks I learned while in there....
They don't give you hair ties so I made hair ties out of the sides of face masks. I used the tooth paste they provided as a deoderant and I also used orange peels as deoderant. Another form of deoderant is getting the bar of soap a little wet and applying it. Those methods all work till you can get deoderant from canteen. They don't give you any cups for water so I saved my milk carton for water and would fill that up during the day. read more
