As with most of the cafes round here it's a little over priced and full of French collage kids at lunchtime. I wouldn't pick this as my first choice, I'd rather head for Paul's to be honest, which is of a similar price. The cappuccino's, hot chocolate and the cookies are particularly good, but whatever you're eating is spoiled by the music blasting out. I find it really odd that a little cafe would do this to your ears, when it would benefit much more by nurturing a chilled out coffee culture vibe. The owner Ben, can be a little imposing too, although if you fancy a heated debate about one of a million conspiracy theories he's throwing about then it might be your cup of tea! Well, at least I can't blame it for lacking character. Tip: Earplugs needed, for both music and owner.

Recently I was searching for a place to park it with the laptop and plug in. I saw the "free wifi"…read moresign, and the large sacks of coffee beans along one wall. It seemed like a work in progress, but I decided to give it a try. The staff are members of an Italian family, from near Rome. The cafe has a pleasant, slightly chaotic atmosphere. I found a table and settled in, ordered some coffee, and kept an open mind. Since this shop is in a "developing" part of Spitalfields, a few blocks south of the market, I wasn't sure what to expect. It turns out I discovered a place that fits the intangible profile of what I like: independent stance, its own atmosphere, definitely not your typical coffeeshop. The best thing to do is kick back, do your thing, and watch the proceedings over the top of your laptop screen or book. From time to time characters walked in and spoke to the owner and other customers about politics, business, whatever. Sometimes even in English. At one point someone pulled up in a Lamborghini and gave the owner's child a ride around the block, I think. They make food there, and they sell coffee beans, and grind them to your specification. They'll ask you what you like in your coffee, suggest a blend, and even write down the percentages in a little book in case you like it and want to re-order again next time. I came away thinking this place has a certain attitude and character. I hope they keep it that way. (The name stands for "fazenda", which means farm or plantation in portuguese, and "uk" which stands for... well, you know.)

He laughed. I paid. I went off happy. Fazenda UK is an independent café and coffee roaster located just off Petticoat Lane market and a few blocks south of Spitalfields market. Despite being located near two very bustling places, the street the café is on is nice and quiet. The café itself is somewhat new, but the Italian family running it seem to have been in the business for quite a few years now. In addition to coffee, Fazenda UK also sells an assortment of home-made cakes and pastries (of which the staff are justifiably proud), as well as soup and sandwiches. I'd recommend the cherry tart if it's available. There's also a small deli in the café. There's a very cosy, homely feel to the café which I like. The walls lined with bags of coffee beans are oddly comforting. Plus, I love the smell of coffee beans and freshly ground coffee. The only thing is that the chairs seemed a little low, and just about did my back in after I had been sitting for close to an hour. This is one of the few places which opens on Saturdays when the markets aren't trading. Of course, there's a reason why shops around this area don't traditionally open on Saturdays, and the owner mentioned that they may revisit their decision to do so in the near future. There's free wi-fi available here if you're looking for somewhere to recharge and reconnect with the outside world. Otherwise, just take a seat, order a coffee, enjoy a home-made cake or three, and relax.

We ordered the following items. VEGAN DETOX BOWL (3 star) £5.95. Nothing is cooked on this bowl. Everything is raw. Trust me, I wasn't expecting that for some reason. I wasn't a huge fan of it as I felt like a bird eating seeds. Great for those on a diet, I guess. Maybe that explains why it's called detox. BLUEBERRY MUFFIN (5 star) £2.95. A MUST ORDER!!! Probably my favorite muffin I've eaten in my entire trip. Very moist and plenty of blueberries with every bite. CHILI SIN CARNE (2 star) £10.95. Where's the spice?!?! If you like your chili spicy or even with some flavor, don't order this. It lacked spice. At 10.95 it's highway robbery. SOY LATTE (5 star) £3.60. Holy heck this Latte is large. It came in what seem to be a soup bowl, since it had no handle. It was great and no extra charge to add soy or almond milk. That alone is 2 thumbs up. Best bang for your buck. Overall, as a vegan I would pass on coming here. Unless you like the raw stuff and lack of flavor. I would recommend this place if you want to get a pastry to take out.
