Raison D'Etre is a typical (in a good way) independent coffee and sandwich shop in London. It's nestled in a little road, about a three-minute walk from South Kensington Station. The interior is cheery, but nothing fancy. Seating is limited, making it a nice cosy spot to enjoy coffee on a cold winter's day. The menu here is quite varied, with everything from coffees and pastries to sandwiches and pasta. Like most cafes of this size in London, most of the food at Raison D'Etre is delivered pre-made, so don't expect fresh gourmet food. I ordered a latte, which was huge (just the way I like it) and delicious. I also ordered a chicken sandwich to take home and eat later. It turned out to be surprisingly good. The breaded chicken was lovely, and the crusty bread had that perfect toasted texture. All in all, I would definitely return to Raison D'Etre. In the midst of bustling South Kensington it's nice to know that there is a laid-back cafe to go to.

This place was such a great find! The hubby & I are staying at a nearby hotel in Kensington and we needed to find somewhere for a lunch that wasn't going to be too aggressive. We were jet lagged and needed food & coffee stat. Upon arrival, the manager was very kind and was able to get us at table. It's the kind of place you have the menu to look over but then have to go to the register to order and pay. I ended up getting the Joseph on a baguette with a mocha coffee....heaven! Whether you are a local or are traveling to London, this is a great place to visit.

None of it was very good unfortunately. : (

We ordered the Italian, the Parisian, and a ham and cheese panini with a latte. The Italian sandwich had a sour old tasting salami on it that was inedible. The Parisian was ok, not special. My sons basic ham and cheese panini was the best of the 3. I would not go back and eat there again. : (

How could you NOT stop by this place!!?!? I was visiting from San Diego California and I am glad I did not follow the the previous review from 2008! I understand that this is a new owner now who just tarted a few months back and the description from 08 is completely off with this new ownership: No loud music: instead nice lounge music and No overly chatty weird owner: instead a warm guy happy to make sure you're getting what you want (and sometime don't even know you wanted ;) read below for details)... I was in the neighborhood and heard from a local friend that they had been declared best coffee in town! Here are some OBVIOUS reasons why I like that place: 1- Wanna cut on the Old Grey!? Go for the house cappuccino! It is to die for with 1inch thick foam and sprinkled dark choc! 8-] Yummy! 2- Need a quick fix for lunch!? Go for a sandwich made with FRESHLY BAKED baguette! Yep the oldest in store were 10minutes old and the owner said:"I'm just making some fresh ones, if you give me just 2minutes I'll have your sandwiches in a fresh baguette". 3- Don't know what to get for lunch or Breakfast today!? I often check out the menu to look for something new to try but not sure what I'll end-up with and I sometimes end-up settling for a safe choice... The owner is definitively aware of his customers and saw in my eyes that I was lost looking at the list of choices on his menu board. He came forward and said:"I can help you chose if you want my help! :)", he asked a few key questions and don't ask me how but I surprisingly ended-up with a intriguingly tasty lime chicken bacon avocado and mayo in a freshly backed baguette... Yummmmmm!!! which trust me I was extremely glad he helped pick! Thanks Matt (the owner)! Good luck with the new place!! :)

This place is a must try if you are in Kensington/Chelsea and looking for a quick bite for lunch. The owner is extremely friendly and even stopped by to give some recommendations for restaurants as we ate. The sandwiches are modest, but the bread is great.

Moments later a gentleman came out and said he made space for us. We were thankful for the gesture so we canceled our Uber immediately. Thankfully we did because the service, food and atmosphere was great! Service is fast, but not rushing. The folks working seemed to be working together and helping each other out. The same gentlemen who came outside to offer us a table was one of the best employees I have seen. He was courteous and friendly. I could see and hear him going out of his way talking to customers and making sure everything was okay. Four our meal, our party of four ordered two steak sandwiches plates, a scrambled egged plate and a chicken salad. Each plate was delicious. My salad was so filling yet light. My husbands steak was so juicy and tender. Our course I tried my nieces egg plate too and the first I noticed was how perfectly the scrambled eggs were cooked. We finished off with some "breakfast dessert." I'll say, they are a meal in itself but very very good. Juices and coffee were good too. There is good food in London but the top notch service here is what gives it a five star!

Cute little green house seating area that we enjoyed a bright evening in the summer…read more They have brunch menu until 5pm but we are too late for it. The dinner menu doesn't have much options and it's all very common British food. We got the burger which is surprisingly expensive. Everything taste great but the beef patty is a bit lacking flavor. We also got the fish with barley risotto. The risotto is quite hard and you can literally taste every piece of barley. But my preference in risotto is rather creamy so this is not for me. The fish is nicely seared tho and they give quite a big piece. The wait staff was really nice and attentive. There's not a lot of customers on a Thursday night so I don't reckon the service would be that bad. And the food come pretty quickly.

QUESTION: Where can you go to get a five-star hotel's afternoon champagne tea for £20?…read more ANSWER: The Wyndham Grand at Chelsea Harbour. It's as simple as that, folks. Because of the Wyndham Grand's out-of-the-way Imperial Wharf location, you, too, could enjoy the epic spread of afternoon tea (with posh finger sandwiches, two homemade warm raisin scones with clotted cream and jam and a spread of individually sized sweet pastries and other treats - too much food for a single person to reasonably consume, I assure you) along with a glass of bubbly at a leisurely pace whilst taking in the view of the harbour and its (billionaires') boats. I'm not entirely sure why the afternoon tea is so cheap, but it is. Tea without champagne is a measly 15 quid. I booked a place for tea online and arrived to a quiet lounge area at 3:00pm, with Sunday brunch winding down in the adjacent restaurant. The table was set, and the polished and besuited server greeted me graciously. The low-seated couches and armchairs were large and cosy, and my companions and I sipped, munched, supped and gluttonously indulged for THREE HOURS. Service wasn't without its faults: the server was a bit nervous for whatever reason, but she was certainly friendly and gracious; my first pot of tea was loose leaf, as one would expect of afternoon tea at a five-star hotel, but my second pot had a teabag chucked in (although said tea in teabag was aromatic and delicious); water and/or tea refills weren't forthcoming, but the server would have fetched these things if asked. Despite these lapses in service (nit-picky though they are), overall, the experience and value for money were outstanding. SUMMARY: Go here if you're a local, you want an indulgent yet inexpensive afternoon tea, you don't want to combat crowds of tourists who may or may not think that the clotted cream belongs in their teacups.* _______________________________________________________ *Although I do know that by posting this review the afternoon tea at the Wyndham Grand may very well become more busy than it was on my first visit, I remain confident that it will maintain its atmosphere of exclusivity due to its less-accessible location.
