A friend has recently been adding different Austin murals to Yelp and I am here for it! I have pics of many of these murals she's adding and I'm excited to include what I've got.
This mural is in my neighborhood (East 11th) on the side of the building of Everest Liquor & Smoke and next door to my beloved Nickel City. In fact it faces the entrance into Nickel.
I walk and drive by this mural countless times daily. Even if not going to Nickel, this is part of my dog's daily walk routine.
Ah, but I digress.
This is one of my favorite pieces by Federico Archuleta (aka el_federico), in fact this image (in slightly different variations) has graced such places as Lustre Pearl and others. It's a tribute to the country rock singer-songwriter, Doug Sahm who passed away in 1999. Though he was from San Antonio, he lived in Austin and formed the band the Texas Tornadoes with Flaco Jimenez and others. The Tornadoes were a revered super group.
Federico is a well-known and acclaimed stencil muralist with works all over the city of Austin.
He's known for other paintings he's done of folks like Bob Dylan (over at Hole in the Wall), Willie, The Clash, and more.
Some of his other work includes religious figures.
Fun Fact:
He was commissioned by Jarritos to design and create murals for them in California. read more
