The man working the shop when we wandered in explained that it's called the "lost art" gallery because they take in art on consignment from people looking to clear out their attics or such and display it for sale there. This place was amazing! They had tons we had never heard of before (but the guy there was more than happy to tell us all about them, from old english ship painters to modern american works) and some rare pieces from artists anyone would recognize, like salador dali. The little shop is definitely set up as a small gallery, with a very interesting, ecclectic selection on display. The Lost Art Gallery is literally the one thing I cannot skip when visiting St. Augustine. The premise of the shop is that people inherit or discover in their attics nice pieces of art, which they then consign at this store. The staff are so knowledgeable and conversational, and the pieces are both intriguing and ever-changing. Though I've never been able to afford anything in this store, I always come in to browse, and I always seem to have a lengthy discussion with the staff, who are always eager to talk about art. Art should be admired and I love this place because it showcases some true gems. Plus I get to flex my art history muscles. Such a beautiful gallery! A wide variety of artists from all over the world with some very well-known names such as Miro, Peter Max, Erte and John Lennon, along with European Masters and even some local and regional artists. The owner and staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. It is a great experience and the prices are good. Lost gallery lists themselves as a licensed art appraiser. I emailed them to get info on an art appraisal needed by my insurance carrier. The initial response from a lady name Victoria was rcvd in a timely manner, polite and outlined the options they offered in appraisals. Good, so far. They asked me for some sizes, descriptions and artist names which I furnished, but when I rcvd the reply it really gave me no idea of what the cost would approximate. So, I sent another email to the responder (Alex) saying that I would appreciate some idea of the final cost ( you'll note that I said "some" idea). I wasn't looking for an exact number, but to give someone an open ended, job price wise would be quite unwise. That was the last time I heard from them, that was 2 weeks ago. Guess they are not interested in quoting....even an approximate number. Maybe their art display and sales are good, but as a licensed appraiser, they should be ashamed.
