    Storefront of the Plum Gallery.

Saint Augustine has a number of art galleries, with many around Aviles Street where Plum is located, but most I feel cater to the tourist trade and have the expected oils of ships and other nautical artwork. Plum is different, with an emphasis on more contemporary artwork and has a balance of various media, with a strong showing of sculpture and some photography as well as oils. Karen Sheridan's paintings of local homes and Hope Barton's traditional--and very Floridian--landscapes are highlights but all the work on exhibit during the galley walk last night (3 April 2015) was pretty solid, and I say that as someone who studied visual arts at SCAD and RISD. Thomas Long's glassworks are also exceptional and must be seen in person really to be fully appreciated. It's refreshing to see a gallery of this caliber in Saint Augustine. The physical space is also very nice, bright, and conducive to the presentation of art without crowding anything: you have ample room here to look at everything on exhibit, an aspect somewhat missing from some other local galleries.

Beautiful handmade jewelry and bric-a-brac, as well as larger pieces of outstanding art. I could spend an entire day in here!

The man working the shop when we wandered in explained that it's called the "lost art" gallery…read morebecause they take in art on consignment from people looking to clear out their attics or such and display it for sale there. This place was amazing! They had tons we had never heard of before (but the guy there was more than happy to tell us all about them, from old english ship painters to modern american works) and some rare pieces from artists anyone would recognize, like salador dali. The little shop is definitely set up as a small gallery, with a very interesting, ecclectic selection on display. Visiting and talking to the guy there about the art was one of the highlights of my visit to st augustine!
