I travel to New Mexico twice a year and each time I visit Los Pollos Hermanos for the finest chicken in the United States! When Gus Fring was in charge everything was stellar. I spoke with him on a few occasions. He was a wonderful man! Even after his tragic death the food, service, and ambiance were beyond satisfactory due to the newly promoted Manager Lyle. The former Manager Cynthia quit in the wake of the supposed Fring scandal. Unfortunately, Lyle no longer works there, and the establishment has lost its former luster. Look, I ain't no food critic or anything. I just work down at Beneke in shipping -- been there a few years, nothing fancy, just forklifts and invoices. I usually bring lunch from home, but last week I forgot my sandwich on the kitchen counter again (thanks, Marlene), so I figured I'd hit up Los Pollos Hermanos on my break. First off, the food? On the one hand, I have never been to a twisters even though I moved to this state 4 years ago. On the other hand, I am a Breaking Bad fan and figured if I was going to try them, I had to go to the one from the show. Yes, it still looks like it did on TV (mostly) , although it has some added spots for fans- such as a corner with a guest book and large photos on the wall and a cutout where you can be Walt or Jesse on the couch in a the hazmat suit (while eating twisters) if you stick your head in. Overall, it felt a little surreal to be there as it was dead empty other than an employee eatting before leaving and someone else who left a (small) mess at the table that's under a piece of paper calling it Walt's booth. Place was clean, music was annoying and loud and coming from only 1 speaker, and the food... I got their chicken sandwich, whatever it's called, and it was hot, freshly made, and actually looked better than the picture on the menu. Aw man, this place is the BOMB! Best place to get fried chicken and fries in ABQ. Period. Get anything on the menu. Seriously, anything. Their secret ingredient must be meth or something, it's so ADDICTIVE. I would eat here every day if I didn't have to watch my waistline. I have seen everyone here: grandmothers, dog trainers, athletes, seriously, anyone and everyone. Even ran into my high school chemistry teacher here once. Gus Fring was a dear friend who worked behind the counter at Los Pollos Hermanos. There was a time I stopped by with my buddy Jesse Pinkman and we ordered the regular double breast, double mash. The three of us got to talking about things going on in our lives. Gus was calm, cool and collected and seemed to know the answer to everything. Jesse on the other hand was a little more intense and was trying to convince me that I was a blowfish or something. For a guy who doesn't even like fried chicken, Los Pollos Hermanos has won me over. On a recent trip to Albuquerque for work, a buddy and I needed lunch. He works in the area and knew the owner from some of his charity work. The owner, Gus, treated us like royalty. He gave us the grand tour of the cooking area which was quite modern for a fast food establishment. What was really impressive about the owner was how down to earth he was. That guy owns numerous restaurant locations, and makes a fortune, but still drives an old Volvo. It's nice meeting such nice upstanding citizens. Besides the great owner, the chicken was absolutely amazing. I don't know how they cook or season that chicken, but it was tender, juicy and amazingly flavorful. The sides weren't really anything special, but that chicken. Yum. I am seriously considering flying in just to eat this chicken again. And there's always a few extra pieces in there. Not this time though. Of all things, they forgot to put any of the famous Madrigal sauces in there. Not a single one, not even Franch. He is very good at controlling everything from the top to the bottom - this is a well-run organization, err business. Some people say they don't feel safe here, and I understand, there seem to sometimes be Mexican drug cartel members coming in, but you can't really stop them or it's discrimination. I used to love this place, my friend Flynn turned me on to it. I guess he used to go with his uncle all the time. He was complaining that they didn't have a great breakfast menu, but you can't please everyone. I don't think he knew about their secret menu (it puts in & out's secret menu to shame) Sadly the quality has gone down pretty substantially over the past few months. I can't put a percentage on it, but it's obvious something has changed, and not for the better. I vastly prefer the Pollos Hermanos chicken to KFC, Chik-Fil-A or even El Pollo Loco. It's always fresh and juicy and flavorful. I joke to my friends that they must put crack in their mashed potatoes because DANG they are good. There's also this blue milkshake that they bring out seasonally in wintertime. You wouldn't think it would go well with the food, but somehow I can't stop drinking it as soon as I get it, and when the shake season is over I get irrationally cranky for weeks afterwards. I like Los Pollos Hermanos because it's convenient and fast, even for a fast food restaurant. First off, there is plenty of parking out front. The staff is extremely well managed and even stop by tables to ensure that your soda is refilled. The chicken is nice and tender with a great blend of spices. The fries are maybe not the greatest though, so minus one star. However, if you are looking for some excellent fried chicken, you can do a lot worse than this place! My only complaint is that there are sometimes people who just seem to be sitting in the restaurant, not really eating or anything. I mean, it's fried chicken so if you see someone just sitting, not eating, it's kind of weird. What looks like just another fast foot restaurant actually brings together the finest ingredients with love and care, and then slow cooks them to perfection. Whenever I eat here, I know I'll have an A1 day because something delicious is always cooking! This must be a front for a meth lab because their wings are crazy addictive! LOL! But don't take my word for it. One taste ... and you'll know. Bonus tip: their napkins are great for taking notes! As someone who works with industrial air-filtration systems, I need to write down important part numbers and their napkins are the new Post-It notes. I used to go there all the time and this place was always packed during lunch. Sometimes you couldn't even get a seat. On one particular day there was no seats available and you had to wait to get a seat. What bugged me was two guys sitting together and they didn't even appear to be eating. Well another table opened and we had a great lunch. Then this elderly couple came in and there was no seating for them and were forced to stand. The two guys were still just sitting there not saying anything at all or eating. So I went over to them and said "Hey, if you are not eating give up the table" and they just stared at me. These so-called tough guys just kept staring making me think "Oh I'm so scared of a couple of guys sitting together" and I doubt they were the type who could cause any harm to anyone anyway. Meanwhile the better half went up to the cashier who then went over and told these two they had to order or leave. Of course they tried to act all bad until the manger or owner came out and off they went. Oh yeah, real tough guys huh? The manager was a real nerdy looking guy and they were totally scared of him! Turns out these two guys got into trouble with the law. They didn't look like your typical criminal masterminds and were probably small time going by my expert analysis of the situation... As for the food, go for the chicken and don't worry about the recent unpleasantness and ownership change.
