We started with enormous (think "bucket") Margaritas and delicious guacamole. We moved onto the Nachos Rancheros, an enormous serving of crispy chips topped with grilled chicken, steak, shrimp and chorizo along with sautéed peppers, onions, tomatoes and pico de gallo. Restaurant was near the motel. Never had Neb-Mex before. I would not call it tex-mex as we lived in Texas recently. I like spinach and chicken enchiladas so I ordered the Enchiladas Jalisco. The chicken was much better than the two anemicly filled spinach enchiladas. They had more red pepper (strange) and hardly any spinach. Rice and beans were ok. My wife had the taco salad with ground beef. She said, "not the best and not the worst. She did say the sour cream had a weird texture to it. True hole in the wall Mexican! The customer service was friendly and warm. Their menu was quite extensive but I chose off their very reasonable priced lunch menu. The restroom was clean, and the building is well kept for its age. The fajitas were very tasty and the portion was very generous. The chips are very thin, if that's your style. I personally prefer thick and salty. The salsa was a mild style that's not containing smoked tomatoes. Many locals were there as I entered, being a great indicator this is probably the best or one of best restaurants in town. Lastly, the service is professional and very prompt. We went here on a whim - honestly not knowing what to expect since we had never been to Kearney before. The restaurant is like most traditionally named Mexican restaurants which has booths and tables along with a small bar in the back. Looking over the menu, it was fairly similar to what you might expect, I didn't really see anything that stood out and I didn't know exactly what I wanted to eat. Then I noticed a picture of what appeared to be an extra wide taco that looked quite appealing. It was pictured in the section of taco salads which they had a few variations of. They had a fajita taco salad and a combination taco salad which was grilled chicken, steak, and shrimp with veggies in a giant fried burrito shell that was in the shape of a taco. My wife got the chile verde with chicken. Both of our meals were top notch! The meat was cooked perfectly which came out tender and well seasoned. The chile verde was delicious and flavors were bold which we like! Our server was very good and service was fast! I give it 3.5 stars. The food is descent and the restaurant is very clean, and the service was fast and friendly. We were driving through and didn't want junk food. Overall, for the middle of Nebraska where there is so much fast food we were pleased to have a pretty good on the road meal. What? Authentic Mexican food in Kearney, Nebraska? Yep, I'm from California and can vouch for it at Los Magueyes. I walked into the restaurant for dinner last night and heard the lovely voice of Anna Gabriel singing a Mariachi song and said to myself, "this is a good sign". You can also tell a good Mexican restaurant by the chips and salsa they serve too. The chips are homemade and so is the salsa. The salsa is blended and had just enough kick to it. Stopped in for dinner while out of town. Overall Los Magueyes came across as the typical Americanized Mexican restaurant. They do offer free chips and salsa and they are decent. I ordered the Carnitas plate and it was your very run of the mill beans and rice with pork and some veggies. I requested corn tortillas and was given flour, oh well they were ok. The meat was very dry and over cooked with several bones in it but had good flavor. The prices are very cheap for a lot of food which always leaves me questioning the quality of what I'm eating. Walking in you are greeted by a nice clown gum ball machine in the first door which is funny and attractive. Then you walk into a nice little Mexican restaurant with a cool picture of a cow (a great addition to piss of the vegans). As I drank the horchata and the cow stared back at me I went into a trance thinking about that little clown gum ball machine in the front. When I woke back I had somehow already ordered the combo plate with enchilada, taco, rice and beans. While the other two people I was with ordered some more tacos and the chicken soup which is supposed to be the most gas thing here fam. The enchilada was pretty mid but the taco was amazing, made me want to throw it up and eat it again. Idk what cheese they put on it but serve me a bucket of that stuff. The two weird people happen to be with said the soup was great and they would get it again. When I left I looked back at that sexy gum ball machine one more time before leaving with tears of happiness for how well my experience was. If you are in Kearney I half suggest this place. Ate here last night, Saturday. In celebration of their 2nd anniversary, a sign on the wall indicated it was their second anniversary, and they were having live music. Not an understatement. Six musicians in full uniform were working the room in complete classical uniforms, white with beautiful embroidered uniforms. A great experience. My wife ordered shrimp fajitas, made to her particular dietary needs. I had Chile Verde enchiladas, also well prepared and delicious. Both came out fast and hot. When traveling we always stop at local joints. Thanks to Yelp we have very few bad experiences (although those always make good memories). Los Magueyes did not disappoint. The restaurant is far from the highway and close to lots of the hotels which is a plus when you have been driving all day. The menu was huge. My husband tried a spicy pork dish that he really enjoyed and I had a grilled chicken breast with chorizo and melted cheese. We both loved our food. The service was wonderful as well. The food came out fast. I was kind of tired and was pleasantly surprised with the speed of the service. The only negative, was my husband had a margarita and that tasted like it was poured out of a pre-made bottle but we were there for the food and it did not disappoint.
