Everything considered, I think Los Cilantros thinks it is gourmet, and acts accordingly. While $16 for a pork rib main dish doesn't seem that expensive, when it only contains three tiny ribs and a stingy portion of emulsified beans, it certainly isn't generous. Besides leaving me hungry the food evinced far more attention to appearance than to taste. It was bland. I find Chipotle food far more nuanced and enticing. Even though we arrived when the place opened for dinner, we waited forever for our food. They even took forever to give us the check! They were also totally uncooperative regarding individual checks for our group of nine. We even offered to split into two smaller tables, to which they responded: "We also add 18 percent to groups of more than six." It sounded more like a penalty for so many of us showing up, instead of a statement that the tip would be automatically added. (That was not a problem.) If the appearance of your food is more important to you than the food itself and the service, this is your kinda place, especially if you are on a diet. read more

I've lived in the neighborhood for 5 years now and have always wanted to try this place because there really aren't many authentic Mexican food restaurants close by. DO NOT go here if you want a burrito (they don't make them), if you like rice with your Mexican food (they don't serve rice), and if you'd like to pay extra for a side of beans in place of rice or chips. I got 3 fish tacos and a side of beans $22. How? IDK . The flavor is there but the portion was very small.I don't mind spending more than $20 on take-out but not to be 'teased' like this! I like that it's a community space, but I won't be back for food. They're expensive for the amount you get. I'm sad I'm still hungry and dont have cash to go buy more food for the night:/ I WOULD suggest coming if you want something tasty and light and have a few extra bucks to spend because it's unlike most other Mexican places I've been to for atmospheric reasons. read more

Had the enchiladas de mole with potatoes and poblano peppers -- sooooo tasty. It's hard to find vegetarian enchiladas that aren't just filled with cheese, and who has the digestive system to handle that? The Los Cilantros enchiladas I had were amazing. The potatoes and poblano peppers were cooked to perfection, the mole sauce was thick, flavorful, and delicious, and the enchiladas were topped with fresh avocado slices and cotija. Amazing, simple menu. I hate the term "authentic" but that's exactly what this is. Its not a place you go just to get americanized "Mexican" food like a burrito. If you want to taste what they are really making in Mexico, try this place out. The quesadillas and the chile relleno are amazing! If you are looking for a taco truck experience you'll be disappointed. This is a nice sit down restaurant with a flavorful, delicious, well thought out menu and fresh fresh food. Please note that this restaurant replaced Cafe La Pena, it is a totally different business! So if you've been to Cafe la Pena before (inside La Pena cultural center) and were disappointed, come back to give Los Cilantros a try, the experience couldn't be more different. read more

This place is terrific! Delicious unpretentious authentic food. Really nice people. Pleasant atmosphere - as in you can have a conversation without shouting. All around a real winner. 4-5 stars for the food - very good, tasty and fresh. 2 stars for prices - for the size of the portions, everything is way too expensive. It would help to have an option to add rice ( which doesn't seem to appear on the menu here anywhere, strangely) and beans for an extra dollar or two -- then it would be possible to have a full meal. That and making the portions slightly larger. Otherwise, even the plates described as "large" aren't filling if you're hungry. read more

5 Estrellas for this neighborhood gem!! Gathered for a family luncheon, we appreciated the attentive service and fell in love with the authentic comida Mexicana! We had the cabbage salad, it was mild in taste, crunchy and made the tacos we ordered all the more better. We had the carnitas (juicy & tender) and the barbacoa (súper flavorful & juicy) both were made with , but the barbacoa was my absolute favorite. The chile rellenos we had were made with a light tangy salsa, the flavors really melted together nicely. The basic accompaniments were far better than most Mexican spots, namely the beans, the homemade tortillas, and the agua frescos (not overly sweet just all natural goodness)! For dessert we tried the flan & plantains both were yummy. Plus there was a class going on next door of dancers with live music which gave this restaurant a great vibe. Los Cilantros is a hidden gem. Consistently outstanding food and wonderful service. The last time I visited, I had what was supposed to be a small group mushroom into a group of 12, including three small children. Los Cilantros could not have been more accommodating. They pushed a couple of tables together and took great care of us. Everyone left full and happy. I highly recommend this spot. Its casual with delicious food. read more

I love the nuevo Mexicano cuisine at Los Cilantros. Traditional Mexican dishes with high quality ingredients and a generous touch of creativity. Everything I have tried has been very delicious. The environment is lovely and is one of the few places on this side of town with an outdoor patio for dining al fresco. Unfortunately they do not yet have the beer and wine license to include the patio so I'll look forward to that dining experience when the license arrives. read more

I love this place! It's a low key and relaxed family type atmosphere with great food. I would suggest ordering a side of fresh tortillas and black beans - both are really good and never go to waste. My one and only complaint is their hours! I really wish they were open more nights - I would be here multiple times a week if they were! read more

Love the food, LOVE the server, especially th one with the curly hair (she's very sweet!) It is a bit pricier, but the taste is so good. I've had the tostadas de tinga, and the sopes. Neither disappointed. I would kill for their chips and guacamole. Go here for really great Mexican food! read more

Came for Sunday brunch and ordered the Carnitas and the Tlacoyito (veg), both were tasty and well portioned, though we added a side of eggs to each. Slightly over priced, but not enough to leave a bad taste. Outdoor seating was lovely, and the local art inside is beautiful. We'll be back. read more

Absolutely the best Mexican food I've had in the bay area. Real mexican food, not tex-mex. We had the heuvos divorciados and the barbacoa. Quality ingredients, delicious authentic food prepared with knowledge and love, chef Dilsa Lugo's food at Los Cilantros represents the best of Mexican culture-- a wonderful addition to the East Bay food scene! Unpretentious, and affordable, you won't find cheap burritos or over-priced American versions of Mexican food here. Haven't tried breakfast yet, but was there for dinner last Sat. night (yes, they are now open for dinner on Fri. and Sat.) and the service was excellent and every morsel devoured. Never tried barbacoa? The best I've eaten outside of Mexico, and I have lived there and traveled extensively. Served with handmade tortillas, all for $14-- a bargain. Although they do not yet have a liquor license (I suggest drinks at Prizefighter) the delicious aguas frescas made me happy. Based on service. Hardly warm and friendly. Acted like we were invisible for nearly 10 minutes after telling us to sit anywhere we'd like and they would be right over with menus. Changed seats to dine outside so that someone would finally notice us and then we couldn't order alcohol because we were outside. Won't be coming back regardless of whether the food is even good. Update: food is mediocre, but the salsas are good. The food is also fast. But bad service unfortunately continued. We received one order chock full of onions, which wasn't noted as an ingredient on the menu. Sent it back because they couldn't do the dish with onions not included apparently. They provided a new menu to choose something else. They did come back two minutes later, but we weren't yet ready and asked for two more minutes. 10 later, we were over it and just asked for the check. I will update my review to two stars because they did comp our dinner (or what bit of it we had), which was the appropriate thing to do. Think part of their issue is that they have no one stationed at the front of the house to greet people or saying anything about seating yourselves. You end up walking to the back to a counter to wait awkwardly for someone to acknowledge you or to give you a menu. read more

Berkeley foodie alert, this place has a spectacular, authentic and unique Brunch menu, sort of Vics for Mexican food, spacious, warm restaurant with lots of light and space, conveniently in S. Berkeley, and it is yet undiscovered! We went on Saturday and got right in. My friend eats there all the time with her boyfriend from Oaxaca, so they have tried many things on the menu that I look forward to checking out. Handmade tortillas and a huge amount of meat on my plate. Hard to see inside from the street is one problem, so looks closed, but from inside you have big window to see scene and get lots of South West Berkeley (aka SOWEBE) light . Delicious! I had tostadas de nopales and halibut ceviche. The cabbage avocado salad is the best I've had. The food was excellent, fresh and flavorful. One small suggestion I have for the restaurant is to make their tortillas less oily or even make their own tortillas. That would add the fifth star to the review and blow the competition away. The ambiance is so cute, the menu is promising, and the service was nice, but the food really, really lacked flavor. The chips were the most flavorful part of my meal. The red salsa was spicy (not flavorful, just spicy), but literally everything else was bland and super overpriced. I wanted to like this place more. Bummer! read more
