Packed house - so wonderful to see!

Ok, I LOVE that there is life coming back into downtown Lorain! I have been to a few shows here recently and I am impressed! The theater is beautiful and it is convenient for west siders. The beverages are decent price and the bathrooms are clean. There is also plenty of parking in the area. Review of the Janis Joplin show on 9/27: The show was fantastic! This is exactly the type of show this theatre needs. Mary Bridget Davies, who played Janis, was incredible. The blues singers and Joplinaires all had beautiful voices too! Great lighting and interaction with the audience. However, I'm not sure if the air conditioning can't keep up with the space once it's crowded or if it's not kept very cool, but it was very, very hot in there this last Friday. Something I'd like to make mention of is we paid a premium to have seats at the high top tables behind the theater seats. The high tops are nice as I liked that I could stand when I wanted without feeling that I was blocking someone behind me and I liked the table to set drinks and our programs on. The negative aspect of the high tops is that we had a lot of talking behind us, as we were in the walkway of the restrooms and bar. There were plenty of people who stood directly behind us and talked loudly as we were trying to enjoy the show. Unfortunately it was not only guests but the people working the bar too. It was extremely distracting. I don't know of too many ways to correct this other than ushers asking people to step in the lobby to have conversations and to convey to the bar staff that their voices carry. I really enjoyed sitting at the high tops, but after this experience, I don't think I'd pay extra money to be disturbed in the future. I don't want to complain about anything here as I truly love that this theater is running but it's something management needs to be aware of in order to keep improving and filling seats. I will gladly keep supporting Lorain Palace Theater with great shows like this and the Led Zeppelin cover band back in the Spring! Lastly, management should work with area restaurants and bars, as they could benefit from all the traffic before and after the shows. I noticed when we left, there was only one bar open, in which they were at capacity, not allowing anyone else in. I sooooo want to see life back in Lorain and think if the businesses partner up, it could be successful.

Being a long time Rover's Morning Glory listener, I was really excited to go to my first Roverfest!…read more I waited in line at Ace's Grill in North Ridgeville for over 2 hours to buy tickets, so it had better have been worth it! Well, it sure was because I had a blast! I went with my brother and his girlfriend and I met my buddy and his cousin there also. The Black River Landing in Lorain was the perfect venue for Roverfest. There was a ton of room for the thousands of people that came from around the country. There was definitely some good people-watching there...lots of trashy hillbillies and some normal looking folks as well. The beer tent, Jeffrey' Jack Shack, was set up well and the lines moved fairly quickly. Prices were reasonable for a festival. Food stands were plentiful, with a nice variety of fair-type edibles like burgers, hotdogs, pulled pork sammiches, fries, popcorn, ice cream, and what have you. There were plenty of Lorain cops patrolling the grounds to make sure things didn't get out of hand. There was only one instance that I saw where the cops had to arrest someone. (See photo) The live music was great! The sound system was loud and crystal clear and the huge HD screens showing the camera footage were very impressive! Trapt, Lil Jon, and T-Pain rocked the house and as the music went on, the chicks got topless! :P It was a drunken good time! The bikini contest was fun and the fireworks display was honestly one of the best I had ever seen! It went on forever! We got out if there as the fireworks were going on to avoid the huge rush to the exits. Overall, it was money well spent and Rover did an amazing job of organizing this event and clearly spent a ton of money. We all had a great time and it made for a very memorable summer.

Reason being I moved out of Ohio and before that I lived about three hours away from it's old location, near (now) Great Wolf Lodge in Sandusky. That said, it impressed me even then with its combo stylishness/slyness. It's not enough to just scream and pop out. That's cheap. You have to be creative and use standard props in an interesting way. Hauntville did and does this. I visited them this Halloween season in the Elyria location and despite being woefully understaffed the creativity remained in high order. one of the most interesting psychological elements was in the Prison house. Not to spoil the surprise but the Warden character (good actor, btw) was always in an "elevated state," making the customer feel more helpless. Little atmospheric touches like this abound, especially in the succinct but suspenseful "Unknown" pitch black maze with multiple awesome "fun house" elements mixed in. Hauntville has HIDDEN RIDES within a few rooms. So fun. AND more BIG HEAD PUPPETS than any other haunt which are more customizable than animatronics, especially when the actors are strong and they are here. You can tell they care. Most of them could improv for days, especially the ticket taker at the Haunted Bayoo/Shanty house. (How many people can riff about "sister-cousins" breathlessly for ten mins straight?) Shout-out to Kristi for really making me feel welcome and appreciated.

I don't want to give away too much...but it was a good haunted house. I'm not a fan of being scared by loud noises and there were a TON of horns and whatnot. Hauntville had a lot of unique scares and things that were different than other houses. The actors with the chainsaws touched your legs with the fake saws and there were a couple big objects that ran right into me.
