At first, I was really anxious and nervous because I had a painful experience with another tooth removal from somewhere else. Dr. Chau's staff on the phone reassured me and outlined me the options and pricing, regarding sedation or no sedation and put me at ease. The ladies at his front desk were so professional, patient and kind with me on the phone and in-person. In the end, I opted for no-sedation last minute because my dental insurance ran out so I had to save money as I am not employed anymore (lost my job due to Covid staffing cuts). Dr. Chau's front desk staff and a nurse were so kind and professional to me. I felt very welcome there. When it was time for my tooth removal, I was very nervous. Dr. Chau talked me through the removal, he said "I'm going to do this, and I will do this" and then in literally 2 seconds, he said, "Ok and it is out." I said, "What? That's it?" I was so surprised at how fast and smooth the extraction happened! I recommend to everyone that it is better if you get your tooth removed by an oral surgeon, since they have the expertise to do it correctly and quickly. I wish I had chosen an oral surgeon earlier like Dr. Chau to remove my other tooth too. Anyway, I have rebooked Dr. Chau to remove my next tooth, and I have confidence and much less fear now of getting a tooth extraction. I also found out that we can self-refer ourselves here. Terrible. I had to…read moreget my wisdom teeth out. Or so I was told. Now sure, I'm unqualified to make that assessment. However, this doesn't pass a basic sniff test. Low and behold fast forward several years and my friends who are dentists confirm that yes, most wisdom teeth don't actually need to be pulled, but hey, if it's insured, bill them for it. I'm fairly certain this is why dentists and oral surgeons are always the bestest of friends. Well now, lets keep an open mind here and go with the assumption that although I never had any pain or symptoms or x-rays, that these teeth needed to be gone. We'll assume this was a professionally correct course of action. Onto the procedure. Now they put me under a general. Off to sleepy land for me. Before going under I placed one simple request. That was to make sure when I wake up I'm in no pain. A very reasonable request given the advanced state of modern pain medication. I have no allergies, and there's a chart provided to doctors with suggested dosing for a dizzying array of medications at their disposal. Well I wake up in searing pain. Not a dull tooth ache or some over exaggerated "give me more drugs" sort of pain, but piercing, stabbing pain which would make a medieval heresy court rethink their punishment. I've broken several bones, been hit by a car and have a tattoo; my trip to this ortho surgeon trumps them all. But I digress. The fact was they just hadn't bothered to give me anything for the post op pain. Plain and simple, just an oversight. They offered me some T3's which would have done something had I not explicitly explained prior, that codine and my stomach just don't get along. So now I'm sitting in this chair post op, in excruciating pain, mad as hell and unable to speak because my face is the size of a watermelon. My mom, embarrassed her son was irate was in a hurry to get me out of there, but wait, "we'll give him something for the pain they say" as they whip out a nice set of T3's. Being unable to talk of course if I recall correctly either my mom spoke up or they realized they had completely forgotten my clear and concise pre procedure memo I basically stapled on their forehead, but they corrected their error and offered me some alternative. So I left the office, irate, disgruntled and again, in the most immeasurable pain I've ever felt. Did I mention my wet shirt? Yes, you try taking some pills after you've had your wisdom teeth pulled and see just how much water stays in your mouth. Some 30-40 minutes later the pills began to numb the pain to a dull manageable level. One might say, the reasonable amount of discomfort a patient would expect to have after such a procedure. Now in all fairness I'm not a keyboard warrior. I'm not an unreasonable individual. Perhaps my expectations were mismanaged by my dental professionals. Perhaps this is the normality of it all and in fact having your wisdom teeth out is just an immensely painful experience wherever you go. I thought this might be the case and I didn't really ever think much more of it. However, several years later, after talking to some 30+ people about their wisdom teeth removal experience, (casually, you know, like you hear someone got their teeth pulled and you ask them how it was sort of thing) I now have enough data points to draw a statistically accurate and factual conclusion: I would feel more comfortable recommending Bill Cosby as a bartender than this place to get your wisdom teeth done.

Very professional, experienced, and informative, would not hesitate to recommend. Can't comment on the cost, as most of it was covered by insurance, and I don't put a price on a good medical experience. To top it off, the facility is lovely, clean and welcoming. Long version: All four of my bone-impacted wisdom teeth needed to come out. I put off getting my wisdom teeth out for years, and don't trust my teeth with anybody I don't already know or have a strong referral to. Dr. Sowden and his team immediately impressed me at my initial consult by providing me with a walkthrough of what to expect from the procedure, and all of the risks involved. Many people don't get much information from their oral surgeons - like how you can lose feeling, and if you'll regain it! There is also a lot of cases where you can easily have your questions brushed off with "it depends on the person, everyone has different experiences". Especially relating to pain, and working through it. But I found that if I asked any question, there was a great effort put in to take my personal experiences into account and give me an idea of what to expect. When I was recommended to get a separate medical scan to see where the teeth were in relation to the facial nerve, I did just that. At no cost to me, I was able to give them more detailed information about my mostly-non-visible wisdom teeth. As a result, I got to see for myself, and be explained the removal of each tooth. There was one I was highly debating getting removed, due to the positioning of the nerve. Dr. Sowden was very honest with his assessment and opinion, and I felt much more confident knowing that the choice was mine to make, and that I was well equipped to make the decision. Because they knew I was undecided about the tooth, they asked me three times on the day before, and before putting me under that yes, I wanted that fourth tooth out. At the surgical appointment, I was in and out very efficiently, for both the staff's and my own sake. I was offered a hair tie and a blanket for the cold room, was put under in minutes, and woke up surprisingly well rested. And the staff seemed fluent in "groggy and a mouth full of gauze". The staff was great with working with my insurance, calling me with any upcoming appointments and questions, and made it clear that I could not come to the surgical appointment without seeing or talking with the person who would drive me afterwards. They will not allow you to leave in a taxi or public transportation. They supplied my person with all the details I would need, and a typed version as well. I was sent out with the written instructions, gauze, two sizes of syringes (for flushing) and my now-extracted teeth. My prescription was faxed to the pharmacy of my choice before I went in, and was ready for pick-up when I was finished. I got wheelchaired out, which was great since I could hardly stand! As I talked with my friend afterwards, I found that they gave her some great little details about my procedure, even though it went pretty smoothly. Such as: nothing happened with the nerve I was worried about. Or how an upper tooth that gave him a bit of a hard time, but it didn't cause any damage to the sinus area. I also got a lovely follow-up call by the man himself later that evening to check on how I was doing, who was as happy as I was about the results so far and encouraged me to call with anything. I couldn't be happier about my experience.

I had to be rude to her and have my employer request for her to stop harassing me. Horrible unprofessional money grabbing dentist. Rude money grabbing reception. I was referred to a specialist but still needed some dental work. Since I was still tied to Dr. Sarrafan because of a crown that still needs to be cemented and monitored by him.. I asked for him to proceed with the few things I needed before I can proceed with the specialist. I was denied treatment from this office.

Office Experience complaint: This business, VIP, requires…read moreme to pay for services upfront and then submits a claim to my insurance company so that I can be reimbursed. Unfortunately, over the past year, there have been two separate occasions where my insurance company sent the reimbursement directly to VIP rather than to me because the office staff had me complete the required forms incorrectly. In both instances, I did not receive the reimbursement I was entitled to for several months. I ultimately had to investigate the issue myself, discover the error made by VIP's office staff, and then take responsibility for tracking down the money that should have been reimbursed to me. When the issue occurred a second time, I asked VIP to reimburse me directly and then resolve the matter with my insurance company themselves, since the situation resulted from an error on their part. Unfortunately, VIP declined to do so. It has now been more than three months, and I still have not received the money owed to me. I also emailed the office last week requesting that they correct the situation and reimburse me directly, but I have not received a response. I want to emphasize that I have been very pleased with the clinical care I have received. The periodontist and hygienist are highly skilled and professional in their work, and I would like to continue my treatment at VIP. However, I have become increasingly concerned about the professionalism and accountability of the office staff, including the office manager. It is particularly frustrating that an administrative error made by the office has resulted in me being without my own money for more than three months, while I have been left to identify the problem and pursue the reimbursement myself. I do not believe it is reasonable or fair for VIP to accept my payment upfront but, when an error on its end prevents me from receiving reimbursement, fail to take responsibility for resolving the matter. I hope VIP will take this situation seriously, review what went wrong, and reimburse me promptly. I would also appreciate assurance that appropriate steps will be taken to prevent similar billing and insurance errors from occurring in the future. I would like to continue receiving treatment at VIP, but I need to have confidence that the office will handle billing and insurance matters accurately and responsibly.

Once the shock was over, I insisted that the dentist refer me to the BEST periodontist in the Greater Vancouver area. I didn't care where I had to go, I just had to have the best. I was referred to Dr. Farzin Ghannad. And I can without hesitation and doubt say that Dr. Farzin Ghannad of Vancouver Implant Perio Centre is THE BEST. He did not rush through the consult. He answered all of my questions. He was very clear and offered up all options with pros and cons to each. He was sincere, honest and very personable. In fact, all his staff are courteous and lovely. I've read the horror stories about gum grafts and had friends regale me with their tales of pain etc. I had absolutely none of that (thus far... I'm still in recuperation). But the procedure was quick, Dr. Ghannad was delightful, offering up comforting words of feedback along the way and his genuine care for my well-being shone through. His after care instructions were perfect and the take home kit excellent! I had no pain, and no bleeding after the procedure was complete. So far so good and I've no doubt this trend will continue through my convalescence. If you need a periodontist, please see Dr. Ghannad. He is the best there is. Truly.
