We brought in our 5 year-old son for a consultation to fix his 8 cavities (yes, we're not good…read morebrushers/flossers) after his general dentist said that he's not experienced enough with young kids. We brought in X-rays, and Dr. Chander maybe spent a minute with us telling what he would do - fix all either with laughing gas or send us to another specialist to fix all at one time under general anesthetic and then he left. We then spent the next 10 minutes talking to the manager about payment options. When I questioned why we couldn't ask for a treatment plan without laughing gas or general anesthetic, the answer I got was, "well, the doctor probably thought he's uncooperative". Since we were uncomfortable with the treatment plan offered, we consulted yet another dentist, and there, the dentist spent 10-15 minutes during the consultation meeting check each tooth over and also testing our son's patience in the chair, needless to say, we went to this dentist to fix his teeth. I have no problems with dental practices needing to make money (especially if they have a fancy waiting room and staff that don't hate you when you walk in). I can also rationalize exceptionally good dentists charging above what is recommended by the provincial dental pay scale (they also will demand the difference between what your insurance pays and what they charge even for a consultation), but what I have a problem with is when a PEDIATRIC dental practice has no desire to determine a child's comfort level in the chair BEFORE recommending a treatment plan. Our son has seen quite a few doctors and specialists and has had a few exams with various machines, and the conclusion after all these exams is how calm he is - in fact, where he got his teeth fixed, he was even used as the example by the parent of a screaming child of how to behave at a dentist's office. Boy, this has turned into a very long review, but we saw the positive reviews from other patients and thought we might be able to get the same - a meaningful consultation with a pediatric dental specialist that would know how to deal with children without having to resort to rendering them dazed and confused. We didn't get that, and in fact, the only thing we did get was a bad taste in our mouths.

I was very mad with the other dentist for not telling us about flouride and toothpaste. (We had been using a non-flouride one.) He suggested we go see a pediatric dentist for surgery. In the end, we saw 4 different dentists for second opinions and they all insisted to put the kids to sleep so they could work on their teeth. We finally found dr young who told us there was no need to put them to sleep and that we could wait a year or so when they are older so they can sit still for a filling. He was very thorough and we were very happy. he is very good with kids and was even able to get my 4 year old to sit still long enough to get his teeth cleaned. He talks a lot and he loves giving out dental facts and explanations, but he is a wonderful dentist.

Only the best dentist can work at Children's Hospital; so for me it was a good place to start. Keenan was seen at Children's Hospital for awhile and later when Dr. Ban opened his practice "Little Smiles Dental Centre" I couldn't be happier! I have two children now Keenan born in 2007 and Branden born in 2010; both my kids are his patients. Dr. Ban has treated my kids from full on Dental Surgery to Crowns to Cavities in my kids. The experience not only with Dr. Ban but with his staff is wonderful; starting from a receptionist that always receive us with a smile and send e-mails with reminders so we don't forgot our appointments to great dental hygienist that are trained to care and entertain the kids while they clean their teeth. While the kids teeth are cleaned, or done any work to them the kids have movies to pick from many to watch from an I-pad over their heads comfortably so they keep their minds off of what is getting done.
