Lucky for me, I was able to get a seat at the bar. My adult beverage was a draft Flight by Yuengling. For lunch, I went with a Pork Tenderloin Sandwich with a side of Fries. The tenderloin was crisp and had good flavor. However, it had a perfect shape, so I could tell it came from a bag and was not done in house. I enjoyed the thin crisp fries. A roll of Paper Towels served as your napkin. Typically I prefer linen, but for a dive bar, paper towels do the trick. I also liked that the Wooden Duck has hooks under the bar. Hooks provide a safe place for purses and jackets. I got a giggle when I used the mens room and the owner showed his political views by having a caricature of the governor in the urinal. They even had a witty disclaimer, so you shouldn't be offended. I got a second giggle when I looked around the bar and realized, about 60% of the guest were an alternative lifestyle. So everyone is welcome at the Wooden Duck.

How did I get here. We retired to a small town that doesn't have a DMV office. So of course although my wife had done extensive research on all the documentation we would need to pay a state to drive our car...we had missed one. So we went to the Wood Duck for lunch while we waited for our credit union to send us a lien release form. We had talked to the kind soul at the DMV and she was "all-in" on this place. She was so right. It is an intimate space, with a small bar out front, and then a few more tables in a back area. We took a booth right in front of the kitchen. It is a very "locals" place. There were some police having lunch (likely the entire force, at least by weight)...and one of them stared me down as if he had never seen a veteran, former DoD executive, in a collared shirt, and khakis in a public restaurant before. [Yes I was the only pepper in the salt]. The actual restaurant staff was excellent, and welcoming. Our server was a whirlwind of effecient hospitality. I got a pork tenderloin sandwich (and later the same day was invited to join a pork tenderloin sandwich group on FB)... ordered the fries, not clear if that came with them, didn't keep the reciept. My wife got a cheesburger that she was very happy with. My tenderloin was crispy, juicy and a bit too salty in a good way. This place is a definite keeper on the list of places we will be willing to travel to over time. Perhaps if I come back often enough, Barney will get used to "others" visiting his little fiefdom.

We both had the country fried steak and biscuits, Karla with scrambled eggs and American fries, basically seasoned fries cut into cubes. She didn't care for the seasoning but she's admitted picky with a very low tolerance for spicy food. I had mine with traditional hash browns and eggs over easy. I've had better country fried steak but it was decent and the meal was otherwise great. Everything was served on one plate, just the way I like it, allowing me to mix things up with my hash browns and biscuits. The biscuits are served on the side of the plate, not topped with gravy in case you'd rather have butter and/or jelly on your biscuits, and they were hot and fluffy with good flavor. It was a very filling meal. The wait staff were great, friendly and responsive. We'll be sure to return to try other items from their impressive menu.

I quickly realized, Wild Pickens Winery is a hot spot and the place to be seen on weekends. They have a fairly extensive wine menu, it was larger then what I was expecting. To my surprise they had an extensive menu. I was expecting a very simple menu of only a few items, but they had it all. Their menu had entrees, burgers and wood fired pizzas. I had eaten brunch earlier so I wasn't that hungry, but wanted to try something. I ordered the Stuffed Mushrooms and they hit the spot. They were stuffed with spinach, cream cheese and parmesan. The order came with three good sized mushrooms, so it would be perfect for one or sharing. They had a band playing in the main room inside and the music was super loud. Friends that I ran into there, told me in good weather the band is outside and makes for a more enjoyable listening experience. The loud music is why they only got a 4 Star rating. The service was small town, down home country friendly. WPW is only open Thursday thru Sunday and I'll definitely be back. I gotta come back and try one of their wood fired pizzas.

We were immediately greeted by the owner, Todd, who was behind the bar servicing customers. He took the time to thank all of us for coming in and shook each of our hands. Todd, separated us from the dry wine drinkers to the sweet wine drinkers, sharing with us his top recommendations for each category. Unanimously! We all enjoyed the blueberry wine the most. We all literally bought a bottle! LOL. Todd had to leave us for other duties, but left us in the care of his staff. These ladies were great and fun. After our wine tasting, we sat to order food. We ordered the meat lovers and the loaded baked potato pizza and a few side salads to share. Never thought of a baked potato as a pizza, but this was sooo good!! The food in general was delicious, fresh, and made to order. The winery itself was super cute. The outside seating area was packed with folks, rocking out to some live music.
