Old school seaside entertainment…read more Since being a child, I have always loved miniature railways that go up and down seafronts. I love the rusting rails. I love the vegetation that grows through them. And I love it when the rails and road merge at level crossings. Volks Railway has all this and more. It trundles along between the road and the pebble beach and takes passengers from the Big Wheel to The Marina and back again. There isn't much to do at The Marina end. The Sand Sculptures don't seem very enticing. But the Volks Railway isn't about the destination. It's all about the journey. And on a warm summers day, little can compare with rattling along the tracks in a scaled down wooden carriage.

We focused our beach day on the railway and "crazy golf" one fine summers day and it led to lots of giggling and sunburn. If you intend to do the same I recommend this beach combination for all and sundry as it is a nice relaxing way to get a pan of Brighton beach and "crazy golf" is at least five minutes of fun before you start sabotaging the game and jumping out of bushes to scare your friend mid-putt in order to break the monotony. It is quite magical how these miniature versions of reality manage to make you feel like you have achieved something on your day out.

The Big Lemon bus company is one of three bus companies I noticed and used during my time in…read moreBrighton and Hove, with Brighton and Hove buses by Go Ahead group almost effectively having a monopoly, it was refreshing to see a different bus, not only different but it stood out, The Big Lemon bus company which had a pretty cool name, imagine saying "I'm getting on the big lemon", if you go anywhere else in the UK it would sound like you're doing stand-up comedy, not talking about arguably Brighton's best bus company. Tom Druitt is a rather popular figure in Brighton for setting up this company, with a goal of being more ethical with buses powered by renewable energy, he is an elected councillor in Brighton with a great idea of powering the bus by vegetable oil, or solar power, which sounds crazy but works! The buses might lack the high tech compared to Brighton and Hove buses, such as by not announcing out each stop, it felt more like the average UK bus outside of London though, as I've only ever noticed this feature before in London before a trip to Brighton. I only used the bus shortly, for two stops taking me from the seafront to the railway station, the buses were reasonably comfortable, but they could allow more room in the standing area and for buggies/wheelchairs. The buses appeared to run on time, but they also didn't appear on the big screens at the bus stop for some reason, I presume this is because they aren't Brighton and Hove buses again who have found a way to stop this. Eco-friendly, cheaper than most other buses with friendly drivers, they could, however, do more for non-locals who don't know the area as well to know where they are, luckily as I was going to the station I got off with the crowds. Could be better by offering more services perhaps at a frequent rate compared to what they have now, or by increasing the room and comfort of the buses, but for a bus company, this actually feels like they care more than most from getting you from A to B. 3*

On the…read morerare occasion I need to attend the office, the 47 saves me around 30 minutes compared to taking two separate buses to Brighton station from Hangleton. Half the time the bus doesn't turn up in the morning, like today making me late for work. And the same applies to the way home. The bus times regularly don't show up on the live timetable so there is no way of knowing if it is arriving and the bus is hourly.

I hope this review will be able to Brighton your day a little bit…read more Brighton understandably has a massive railway station that dates back to 1840, and it's been increased many times in terms of volume and capacity, partly because 17 million passengers a year makes Brighton number 7 on the list of the most busy stations in the country - not including the many many busy ones in London itself. It's huge and has a big old Victorian roof that will remind you of a London Station. It's one of only 70 grade two listed buildings, partly because people absolutely love it. It's a massive modern hub, but also part of History. It's hard not to love the station and I really do. It's also the southern terminus of many national trains, although trains don't really stop here without having to then turn back on themselves, which is interesting. It's been made to look mostly white and blue - kind of like the Pavilion - so it does have a little local Seaside feel, and The Concourse has been completely redesigned so now it looks totally modern, and honestly you would think you were in London sometimes. The blue motif pushes it over the edge, and it's easily five stars - in fact if I could give six stars the station would get six.

It is an easy walk to the pier, the bus stops, train station or the Royal Pavilion. The front staff was great. Leah, was very helpful and friendly. The My Hotel has a funky, modern vibe to it, similar to the aloft hotel chain here in the US. The front desk also told us how to get to the hotel from Heathrow via e-mail. It was a pleasant 5 minute walk from the bus stop. The room was super clean and very nice. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. We had the standard room and it was not too small, even with our luggage and things. They had nice little features throughout the room and again funky cool furniture. I don't think any two rooms in the hotel are exactly the same in decor. The My Hotel is very green conscious also. The hotel bar looked pretty cool also but we did not use it. There is a great coffee shop and Indian restaurant virtually connected to the hotel. The staff again was fantastic. They held our luggage after check out, gave great directions and recommendations. I would stay in this hotel again without question if I came back to Brighton. We paid about $150.00 USD per night .

Not to be confused with Farmer Station, which is a bunch of country bumpkins…read more Falmer is a lovely little station in East Sussex that seems in the middle of nowhere, and has what looks like a big house with big chimney sticking out of it, which is pretty gorgeous. It is basically the stadium for the Brighton soccer team (football rather - Brighton And Hove Albion who just got an undeserved point against us thanks to corrupt CIty-sponsored refs using VAR to rig things), which is weird because it's such a little station and yet it serves the massive stadium that is literally overshadowing it, if you look from a certain angle. The stadium is enormous and dwarfs the station, which on a match day will get masses of traffic, and the rest of the time it's just pretty dead. So you want to be a farmer? Here's a couple of acres (kicks you in the testicles).

Falmer Station is a traditional English railway station one would find out of town, or perhaps in a…read moresmall town or village, this, of course, serves the Falmer area of Brighton, which also happens to be right next to The Falmer Stadium, known as The Amex for sponsorship reasons which is home to Brighton and Hove Albion FC. On a match-day, fans can travel from here into Brighton centre for free as long as they have a match-ticket, which is an incredible and cool gesture from the club to arrange, and they even include away fans, I was for sure glad of it as a Manchester City supporter. The inclusion of this station in such a key location serving the stadium built in 2011, makes it a really easy stadium to get to and possibly in line with the likes of the Etihad Stadium and Wembley in a way, which both have stations either built in to the stadium or just a stone's throw away. The trains aren't regular serving here on any other day, which is a flaw, but the main flow of people using the station would be on a match-day heading to a game when they run extra trains every 10 minutes in both directions to and from Brighton (direct service) anyway. It is located on the East Coastway line, the main cities served on that line being Eastbourne and of course Brighton. A regular service on a non-match-day, or if you don't catch a special direct train can take anywhere between 15 and 20 minutes. On a match-day the queuing system after the game is handled incredibly well and deserved credit, I didn't have to wait too long and there were so many staff on hand to help and answer any questions if needed, to the point I'd say it was probably better than the Metrolink station serving the Etihad Campus in that regard. No facilities at the station, however, it is step-free, so if you were planning to get a drink before heading back into Brighton from here, you're out of luck. A great station on a match-day, if allowing plenty of time before the match, and coming back not too late after, but pretty much below average at any other time, other than having a perfect location for the football stadium (Again not as good for away fans, who are located at the other end of the ground) 3*

Top tip - if you get off the train at Brighton Station and there is a long queue for the taxis run…read moredown the road for 30 seconds and order one in this rank ! They usually can get you one really quickly ! In fact, they often have cabs outside waiting. The 'rank' actually consists of a waiting room with an intercom where you can talk with someone in an office. Have always thought it a bit strange that you never actually speak to anyone face to face (I assume they are actually in the same building and not answering from somewhere else !) If there isn't a taxi available there are a couple of seats so you can wait indoors. A bonus if it's late and and/or cold. Fares are predictably expensive - but no more than any other Brighton taxi company (in fact, there are none in the area that I know of that are notably cheaper !)

Told that there weren't any 6 seaters available. Didn't have the curtsey to let us know before. Will definitely not use again.
