I had picked up some presents for a friend's birthday party but there wasn't a Paperchase or a Scribblers or a Ryman anywhere near by. I needed wrapping paper. Desperately! I figured that I couldn't go wrong with at least a quick look here before doing the "newspaper" thing. And holy cow, there it was on the rack of greeting cards. Not just one. Not just two. A choice of THREE styles of wrapping paper! They didn't have any cello tape, but I had come prepared with a glue stick. And so with my new £1 package of wrapping paper, I sat on the Tube and wrapped presents. Woo! Thanks, Tesco. You saved me from looking completely without cooth.

A large queue builds up around this pillar every lunchtime meaning you have to push your way past people even to get into the store, then you end up tripping over a pallet as the shelves are being restocked, before you join the queue that's already looped round the far end of the store and is half way back to the front (the tills are at the front). At least the tills are well manned so the queue does move along quite quickly.

There are lots of sugary delights - packets of penny sweets and chocolate bars included. The most recent addition of small pots of a new treat called Pudding, which is helpfully clarified with the word pudding repeated beneath its Pudding brand, is a particular favourite if not only for its name. These colourful puddings are somewhere between jelly and angel delight, and each fluorescent colour - orange, blue, pink, yellow and green - comes in a different pudding shaped vessel. Not to be missed I'd say. And I simply cannot write about this place without mentioning the man behind the counter who is endlessly happy, smiling and delightful. I've heard "that shop down the road" on many many occasions. Anyway, this is our go-to shop at work. There are plenty of other convenience shops nearby, even a Sainsbury's, but this remains the staff favourite. They sell all kinds of stuff you never knew you needed. A coworker of mine enjoys a sandwich from their deli counter every day. I've stopped by several times for some delicious soup, an odd can of tuna here and there, and (when I'm feeling extravagant) some halva. If you don't know about Halva, get out now. It's delicious and probably an acquired taste but I LOVE it. I want to bathe in it. This shop definitely has an advantage over some of the smaller convenience stores dotted around the area in that it's independently owned, is much larger, and has a much better selection and value.

So after she served the customer behind me, chatting along, as she clearly knew her, she then decided to serve me. Another customer had joined the queue and I said. "Did you not want to serve this customer before me, as they take priority to a Post office customers?" She said No! Fed up because the store keeps moving the stuff around to stimulate impulse purchases? ;-)) Hacked off by people standing yacking in mid-aisle to enrich their shopping experience? Suffering from arthitis/rheumatism/an old war wound? Several supermarkets do home delivery in many areas (e.g. Asda, Tescos). I've tried all of them, but Sainsbury's are by the far the best IMO. Maybe not the cheapest, but I think the best value. You can login 24/7. Then you have find out whether you are in fact within their catchment area, and register to provide the usual details. Having done that, you first have to agree a delivery window, which you can select (best to go to the site about 4 days prior to delivery for maximum delivery slots). So you're ready to rock! You click your way round their 'e-aisles' and 'add to basket' as required. This takes a while first time round, but it adds your purchases to your My usuals log, which will show up next time you login. All that happens then is that you remember to be at home and wait for them to cruise round. You have reduced your carbon footprint and saved yourself a lot of grief! ;-) It costs £6 per delivery, but if they are late, you don't pay. They will make suggested replacements which you can either accept or send back. These are usually O.K. You will also instantly see what is on special offer (e.g. at the time of writing for example, wine is 25% off! For the benefit of the geekish I am sure that they use CRM software to log transactions, because the number of our suggested replacements seems to just go down and down.
