Fatty pork chop and potato salad
    Jordan H.

This was my first visit to Lommerzheim. I ordered the pork chop (the options are fatty vs. lean; I chose fatty and recommend it) and potato salad. The food was absolutely delicious and that was the biggest pork chop that I have ever seen. The service was good. There was a steady stream of customers that continued to arrive after I was seated. So the waiters very friendly, but it was clear they were quite busy and needed to keep moving. The restaurant doesn't accept credit cards, so be sure to bring cash to pay the bill. I mostly enjoyed the ambiance as all of the customers seemed to be enjoying themselves and their meal. However, a major drawback for me is that there was no air conditioning or fans and the restaurant was uncomfortably warm and stuffy. I certainly understand that it's an older building that's been renovated, but I'm sure there has to be a solution to help get air circulating in the restaurant. This is the primary reason that I decided on a 4 star review versus a full 5 star. Overall, I enjoyed myself and would go back.

Affectionately known as "the pork chop place across the river" by hundreds of American freight pilots, this is one of 2 must eat places in Köln. I give very few 5 Star ratings, but this juggernaut pub delivers the most amazing thick cut, moist and flavorful pork chop on the bone you will ever experience during your life on this earth.... yeah, it's that damn good.

Pork chop and fries... 12 euros wow!

The dam porkchops. WTF. 12 EUR for a tasty-ass, juicy pork chop that's large enough to feed me and my wife. Get the chops with grilled onions, side of fries, ask for their home-made curry ketchup, and open your throat to let the Kolsh beer in. The service and place is a bit on the rough side, but that doesn't mean the waiter wasn't friendly... it's definitely a neighborhood bar visited by locals. No pretentiousness here so don't come here in fancy clothes. This place is another gem that I found while visiting Germany. Did I mention the dam porkchops were only 12 euros???

A great local option if you want to go where the locals go. A local pub and restaurant. Nothing fancy Lived up to all five star reviews! Get the fatty option pork chop with onions on top and definitely try the curry ketchup and the mustard. Remember if you don't want another beer, put a coaster on top of your beer glass!

    Yes, that's the whole menu.

I visit Cologne once a year for a conference, this time I stayed near the Koelnmesse. I'm always looking for authentic German grub, local atmosphere. Lommerzheim fits the bill. It's a local pub. Just a block or two off the beaten path in a more residential area, Lommerzheim has a home feel and great food at a good value. Note that this is a cash only establishment. You shouldn't need more than €25 per person. The atmosphere is a pub, the staff are great. It's warm if you're inside so dress casual and light. The staff aren't big on conversation, especially if you don't speak German, but they are very friendly and provide great service. The pork chop (Kotelett) is the main item on the menu. They offer a moist or lean version: when faced with that choice for meat I always choose moist. They also offer with glazed onions (zwiebeln) piled on top (yum). Kotelett come with fries or potato salad. I can get fries anywhere but German potato salad (outside of Germany) opportunities are rare. Food was great. My pork chop was a tad dry for my taste, but I'm a bit of a pork chop snob. I also prefer grilled vs. fried pork chop. That said it was great and I would (and likely will) do it all again. Of course when in Cologne I have to have many glasses of Kolsch beers to wash down whatever pork dish I am eating. Lommerzheim serves Kolsh the same as every other restaurant: in small glasses that you can't keep track of until you look down at the coaster and see nine tick marks and wonder why you feel so relaxed.

Beer was server's choice. And it kept coming!

A work colleague and I went here during a trip in from the US. First, the location was very busy but we managed to seat ourselves at a booth downstairs. The server was instantly fantastic! He got us set up with kolsch, his choice, which we loved, then talked us through the menu. My colleague is a notoriously picky eater while I'll try anything. We both loved our meals here! She had the hot garlic braut with fries and I had the lean pork chop with onions and potato salad. The pork chop was INCREDIBLE! So happy I got it. I also really liked the potato salad. The portions are huge and the beer keeps flowing so bring your consumption 'A' game. I couldn't finish the potato salad and it worried the server but I assured him it was delicious and I just was very full. Highly recommend!!

    Beer and lots of beer

Great place for Kölsch and Kotelett. Very popular with locals so be prepared to wait. Good thing is that you can have beer and great conversations while you wait.

They mark your beer count (small beers) on your coaster. After meal, you pay at bar if on patio, Joe writes charges on coaster.

Cash only. No credit cards. Now the rest of the story. Yelped on way to Cologne from Heidelberg. This place is off the tourist grid. Way off. Seat yourself on patio or inside. You may wait longer than normal but in time a waiter will approach. Look around at food being delivered to other patrons. I went for giant pork chop with a dry rub type coating. They ask lean or fat, I went lean. It is giant, comes with very strong mustard you can sample as you work toward bone of the chop. Ketchup here is a customized spice blend that you will want to create at home. I asked if they take credit cards 45 mins into my visit. They do not. Server Joe gave me directions to ATMs. He trusted me to leave, get money and come back. He said: I know you will come back. Tip reflected his trust. Love, love, love this place and Joe. Do not miss this experience and food.

The schnitzel was tender and tasty; the fries, crisp and delicious. I can't say enough about how friendly the owners and staff are. They don't speak much English, we don't speak much German, but that never gets in the way of a good time. I'm not sure why this place is labelled a "dive bar." It's not. It's a classic, cozy, family-run Kolsch restaurant with traditional food. It's delicious, affordable, and very friendly.

The owner was incredibly friendly and helpful when it came to explaining dishes that were in German on the menu. We ended up ordering the Currywurst and the cheese filled Schnitzel. WOW. They were probably the best of their kind that I've ever had. The currywurst was delicious and had just the right amount of curry in it. The schnitzel was filled with camembert cheese, cranberry sauce on the side, and a lovely fresh salad with a home made olive-oil based dressing. There were 3 of us and we were beyond full after sharing the two dishes above; the cheese filled schnitzel was sizable and very filling! If I ever am back in Cologne, I will be sure to visit this place again, and I can safely say that this was the best meal of my entire trans-Europe vacation (included Belgium, Amsterdam, and Germany) :) Thank you for the delicious food and hospitality!
