I observed six/seven different types of lettuce some of which were Romaine, Crunch, and Bibb. We went to a Farm to Table affair, a six course dinner sponsored by the farm using a local restaurant for preparation at $100 a plate. Some of the freshest food on the planet. An enjoyable evening with over 75 in attendance and entertainment. This farm is also an important supplier of hay to local farms. Check out the store during business hours. They sell many types of fresh food, using the honor system, since there is no cashier present. The staff will be very happy if you want a tour of the hydroponics area of the farm. Please make an appointment in advance. They have a saying at the farm: " where every day is fresh ".

A typical week includes two types of fruit, some sort of leafy green (salad greens in spring, kale and such later on), some sort of potatoes, an additional veggie (like peppers, onions, and/or eggplant), a loaf of bread and a dozen eggs. My girlfriend and I take one share, designed for a family of four, and we eat well all summer and fall and are able to save a significant amount for winter. They're usually open every Saturday with extra foods and meats for sale. Lastly, even though this is a family operation, they are always quick to credit their "workshares" - members who work picking and/or packing produce in exchange for reduced rates on their CSA. They have locally grown produce and fresh locally sourced meat, (including other local farms for chicken, eggs, and dairy) which so far have all been GREAT! We've purchased a beef quarter (see Wagner's Review) and the meat is just fantastic, though availability can be spotty for prime cuts in the "store". All of their seasonal produce that I've purchased (corn, onions, garlic, peaches, melons, cucumbers, tomatoes) have all been delicious. They aren't always the most organized on meat and the prices are a little higher on everything but you're actually getting local farm produce. (I've noticed a lot of places supplement with commercial foods for convenience and that seems duplicitous when they don't identify which is which!) Everything from here has been good, zero disappointment's.

We stop by to see what the price were, but Cranky Crab is a very small operation so we felt obliged to order. They definitely weren't as cheap, but the proprietor, "Biscuit" explained that was probably the price for the smaller crabs. The ones here were 7 or 8 inches across (#1s or extra large and very meaty males). We decide to get only a dozen and it took about 20 mins to get them steamed. While we were waiting, my 8 yo asks if he could see the equipment to which Biscuit obliges. He even gives my son a little popsicle from the freezer, which was much appreciated on a hot 90F summer day. He's a grandpa, so maybe that's why he's good with kids. With a nickname like Biscuit and a clean crew cut, I thought for sure he was in the military, but he is/was a firefighter and adopted his the nickname in honor of his dad. Overall, I'm glad we stopped by. The prices might be a bit big for some people, but so are the crabs. Stretch your dollar and save all the crab shells, bits and pieces to make a crab stock. Then use that for your next soup or stew.
