The Dalwhinnie is an unuual, historic Inn located in the Cairngorms National Park, offering more-than-comfortable accommodation. They rent out mountain bikes too and also have drying facilities for wet clothes, which we found to be a massive bonus! One of the best assets of this hotel is in the lounge on the upper floor - it has a fully glazed wall, affording magnificent views over the River Truim toward the Cairngorms, and is truely spectacular. The relaxing river-side restaurant serves deliciously fulfilling food, with a wide & varied menu, and the staff provide wonderful service. Arrive late in the evening and watch the shadows creep across the wide vista of the Loch: Rise at dawn and watch the sun burn the early morning mist from the water's surface. Make time to arrange a visit to the nearby distillery; but beware too many samples, as your short journey back to the Inn may require more than a steadying hand!! But make sure you buy a bottle or two of the malt. Should you return again you will feel as though you are coming home or visiting an old and close friend. The entire staff goes above and beyond to make sure that your needs and desires are met. From the included breakfast every morning to the offering of packed lunches for your daily hikes the team here is a cut above the rest. The rooms are large with beautifully updated, modern washrooms and showers. The tea kettles and assortment of coffee and teas(in room) are brilliant and the perfect touch. The main dining area/restaurant is delicious with terrific daily specials. The bar area/casual dining area is just as great and features traditional, Scottish, live music some nights. Big hotel with rooms to rent on the property. They had play areas, kids video and play areas too. Pool had really weird hours. Apparently it was disinfected every few hours or some such nonsense AND you had to make an appointment for available times (in mid-day). I think that would have been fun but didn't use it. An area outside with growling moving Dino's... large enough to be fun for kids... a surprise for us! We loved the extensive trail system and the ruins of a local castle on a tiny island in the lake. Trails are well marked. People were nice, staff was helpful. Area was pretty and quiet. Centrally located. Great transit system; we made appointments to see local attractions via trains / bus - gotta get the timing right and pay ahead. Note: there are stiff fines for cars traveling inside Edinburgh and London- check on this before you drive!

We stayed in one of the A-frame cabins on the property. It was about a ten minute walk to the main hotel building, which we were okay with as there were families with children running all around the main hotel building. The cabins were perfect for four of us who wanted to sleep, read and catch up with each other. Cabins are well laid out and nicely furnished. The Hilton Coylumbridge is outside of Aviemore by a little less than a mile. That meant any meals with alcohol in Aviemore meant one of us had to be a designated driver. We did take advantage of the on-site restaurant our last night, so all four of us were able to eat, drink and be merry. We will be back.

That was my favorite place to hang out. There was also chairs outside overlooking the lake and it was so quiet and peaceful at night. And there's a little hike behind the hotels to the waterfall. So having taken a family of four to both Ill give you some tips. They are both lovely ways to stay but if you want your kids close and safe while still having a door between you for alone time with your partner stay in the inn. If you plan to make your own meals to save money stay in the bunkhouse. But even if you choose the bunkhouse it's worth paying for a breakfast in the Inn.
