My bf and I participated in a light & fluid art project led by "Combsy the Chemist" at the Valentine's-themed Tech at Nite: Love Lab this past Thursday. We used food coloring, dye, cooking oil, and water to design a liquid image which was then displayed through a projector. It was a fairly simple but interesting process, definitely different than any other art activity I've ever done. Staff was helpful and patient while giving instructions, and they were very encouraging too. Local Color supports local artists, sharing their creative works with the community through programs, galleries, and public art displays, including one of my faves, the 100 Block Mural, a colorful mosaic celebrating diversity which can be viewed near the SJZ Break Room in SJ. Last week, I also had the pleasure of checking out Reels & Records at the Noble Workshop & Gallery, one of many art exhibits through which Local Color has had an influence. They work in collaboration with different organizations and events, and continue to support the art community and education in the arts. They've contributed to the beautification of San Jose and neighboring cities in the south bay, even without recognition at times. In fact, I'm not fully aware of the various projects in which they are involved, and have only come across their works or events by chance. Their old sign is still up outside an abandoned building on South First Street, but I don't think they have a dedicated space or gallery in which they can be found (as of February 2026). Local Color always knows how to tap into the heart of the community. I stopped by for their "99 Bottles" project hosted by Fatima and Car--bringing together local artists to design their own unique bottles. The variety of styles and people represented just shows how strong and inclusive the San Jose art scene really is. Best time to pull up is during San Jose's First Friday. The whole area comes alive, and if you're already out, you're just a short walk from the energy at San Pedro Square too. Local Color isn't just a space--it's a foundation for diverse voices, creative strength, and real community building. I'm looking forward to seeing even more shows here--and getting even more involved myself. read more

Vibrant Art Community In Heart Of Downtown San Jose SITREP Local Color is an incredible creative movement making Artist Spaces in Downtown San Jose from allowing the use of dormant buildings & spaces. THE SETUP As it turns out, I'm catching them in their SECOND installation (newer location) as "Local Color 2.0" here in what once was a Ross/Kohl's building I think(?), right on S. 1st Street. What an awesome art space! Stumbled upon the bazaar and found a bunch of artist spaces (most seem to be there on weekdays). I came on a weekend but there were a number of vendors: flea market style. So cool! There were vintage clothes, handmade jewelry, antique jewelry, unique trinkets for sale, interactive art installments, a place to reserve time to record your story, a resting place with yoga mats and comfy chairs, art pieces all around, a mimosa bar, and an all-around awesome vibe! What a great space! Not sure if this is only a temporary location, or a permanent space, but I hope it is here to stay! I could see this place really booming in popularity. The art scene is making its prominence known even greater here in San Jose, and I think this is the perfect venue to capture that growth and support our local artists! Check it out! read more

I've always been one to support local artists and I'm super excited every time I walk into Local Color! The positive energy and chill vibe sets up the mood to appreciate the art that surrounds you and artists are always easy to talk to and laugh with. I'm a big fan of "Color Me Rad Thursdays" where you can chill with your friends and paint with guidance and feedback from a Local Color Artist! Be sure to stroll in while you're downtown to develop your own opinion of my favorite place to escape my work congested mind! read more

wasn't really feeling local color's hospitality Evidently, they don't have a "public" restroom.. since I know a handful of great artist that rent the space, performed there more then twice.. they were always open to allow me to utilize the space with no discrimination what so ever. .. maybe cause I was wearing sweat pant and a sweatshirt.. they assumed I was some "bum" tryna smoke a rock or tag up the restroom. truth is ... I'm a resident in the community, all I had to do was take a piss in the proper facility rather flip my D out and get charged for indecent exposure. moral of the story..... if your Gona be " open to the public... don't be half way about it, and try to address people "residents" with a little respect. thank you! read more

There are actual art galleries around. This place felt like a flea market. Random people biking through. There are some great artists there. But it's just trashy overall. read more
