For that show, we were actually sitting in the front middle row, and it really felt as if during the swing performance they were going to swing into our laps! A couple of the numbers I actually jumped back in my seat it seemed like they got too close! But amazing performance by San Jose Taiko!! This particular evening, I saw a friend performing in "shaking the mess out of misery! "They had great acoustics in this particular performance, but not too much singing in the actual show itself so more of a play and a great story for young women to see how things were different from the 1940s or 50s until now! I love how this particular play had the proper lingo and accents of the era and that southern hospitality sound!! I had to look up a couple of the words, but the play, and the overall meaning itself was great!! A bunch of merchandise vendors and beer tents were lined up along West Saint John Street. Talented musicians played awesome tunes for the crowd throughout the day. John Blues Boyd band performing the blues at Poor House Bistro's patio stage where I snacked on some delicious baked dessert while delighting in the spirited musical entertainment, and All Things Swamp putting on an engaging show at the main stage in the early afternoon (I didn't stay for the later bands but I'm sure the remaining performances didn't disappoint). Some great community events are held at Little Italy San Jose, like car shows, cultural celebrations, food fairs, and art & music festivals, many of them free to attend. But on a regular day, it's mainly a small collection of restaurants selling italian cuisine, wine, and other goods. Parking is extremely limited and can be difficult, even when no special events are happening in the vicinity.

Sure, it was nice that the opera was NOT nine hours long, but that's me. Your mileage may vary. The outside of the building blends in so well to its surroundings, you may not notice it at first. But, the California Theatre is easy to find, and perfect to walk to from parking or a restaurant. Even in the entrance way before you walk in (where there's the Box Office for will-call or day-of tickets), you see the elegance and grandeur that awaits. Still, there's nothing stuff about it at all. Every staff member or volunteer I encountered was helpful, friendly, and welcoming. There happened to be live music in the Lobby before and after the performance. Refreshments are found on each floor. We had Orchestra Seats. The opera looked and sounded crisp. The singing, the set, the orchestra, the costumes all radiated excitement and serious fun. This particular opera, by Bela Bartok, is rarely done and having some familiarity with the composer, I was excited to check it out. Very much enjoyed the opera, and the venue. The museum felt unusually more spacious i.e. a lot of empty space than before due to exhibits being removed and interestingly, it felt slightly outdated. The Human Body exhibit was still there so that was nice to walk through and the Rube Goldberg exhibit outside was exactly as it was years back. The gift store was pricey and didn't have as much interesting gifts but the IMAX show felt just like before & was included in the admission, which was nice. With all the changes that this museum has gone through, I unfortunately won't be coming back here in a while until there's something new that's rolling through.

We were in San Jose for Labor Day weekend 2026 and looking for something to do. I googled what to…read moredo in San Jose and the only thing that came up was the Winchester Mystery House beside shopping. They have some good shopping the Westfield Mall and Santana Row. We're good on clothing and other goods so we weren't really looking to go shopping. I've heard of the Winchester Mystery House, but have never been. This seemed like my best chance. My husband has been twice. When he has 12 and then again when he was 42 so it wasn't new to him. I looked them up on their website and was shocked to see how expensive it was to make a single 1 hour tour, but it's really the only thing to do in San Jose besides eating and shopping so we took the plunge and decided to go. I looked and there was plenty of tickets on Friday so we figured we could just show up and go. For some reason I was inspired to look Sunday night to recheck the ticket prices and ensure they were going to be open Labor Day. To my shock the 10am slot was sold out and so were most of the morning slots. There were tickets at the 10:05am tour time. I didn't want to commit so soon at the same time I didn't want to miss our opportunity to see the house. In the end I took the gamble that we'd be up and ready to go by 9am to ensure we would make it to the 10:05 tour time. It cost $92.22 for 2 people including taxes and fees. Wow!!! Steep. I'm glad there were tickets left and I was able to snag 2 for the early time as we needed to make the journey home afterwards. We arrived at around 9am and thankfully found parking. On their website they said they were under construction and parking was limited and you may have to park at Santana Row. I didn't want to have to walk that far so we my husband humored me and we arrived extra early and were first in the parking lot. Good for us. We hung out in the car till 9:40am and then headed to the gate to get in line. There was a crowd forming, but no actual line. They opened the gates at around 9:45am to get everyone through security. They inquired if we had any weapons including pepper spray and inspected our purses. Good thing I left the pepper spray in the car lol. After entering in the court yard we were directed to the gift shop. We were informed that the most important room of the house, the bathroom was though the glass doors and through the inner courtyard. Also look for the green and red sign as that is where you go for your tour. At 10am sharp they called the first group in. They scanned your ticket and then took your picture agains the side of the house and give you a card to look at your picture after your tour. In addition after your tour they email you a link to your picture in addition to being able to look up your picture via the QR code on the card they gave you. I didn't look at the pictures till I got home as I took a really good one of us in the garden. When I got home I used the QR code to look at our pictures and I was shocked that they looked so good. They superimposed a picture of the house behind us. It was a super fun pose and my husband actually smiled in the pictures. They are only $35 for the set of digital prints. I'm not sure how it works if you get the printed copy at the gift shop, if they also give you access to the digital prints as well. I sure hope they would as these days everyone wants it digitally so they can post it on social media and send it to friends and family via email or text. I'm still tempted to buy the picture set. We'll see how long they leave it up. We just look so good in the pictures. I'm a total picture person and a real sucker for photo ops, especially photo booths. To add to it they did have a Photo Booth in the gift shop that looked fun, but as I said we did take some really cool selfies so we really don't need more pictures. The first cool thing you see is the door with the stairway that goes nowhere. So cool. Excitement from the very start. I got a cool picture of the staircase. The house is huge, but the room inside are tiny and I mean tiny. It's like you're walking into a closet. You are walking in and out of a room before you realize it. It almost felt disrespectful walking through and hearing they had 'ghost' noises playing in part of the basement. This woman was highly intelligent and did so many great things just to be painted as a crazy woman. Winchester needs to do better. I drove 45 minutes to Hakone Gardens recently at the end of March and found out that most of the cherry blossoms were gone. I was like whaaaa....I usually go during the end of March and they would be in full bloom. Apparently, they bloomed earlier this year. I was looking forward to seeing the wonderful pink color all around. Anyways, Hakone is still a treat to walk around and is very nice when the flowers are blooming. I love sitting near the beginning of the trail and looking at the ponds, bridge, koi fish and all the trees. It transports me to Japan without the airfare and passport. Parking can be difficult on busy days and will be waiting for awhile for someone to leave. Gift shop is cute and there are many cute finds in there. Admission is now $12 but parking is still free.
