Unprofessional and unorganized salon. Erica and Kay both do a great job with sew-ins, but booking…read morean appointment here at this salon is a hassle. I've been charged double for an appointment cancellation in which I rescheduled, came back, and arrived the next day waiting outside in the cold. Which, no one ever came and I had to find another stylist to do my hair. This place could definitely be something if the management/owner stepped up the customer service and repertoire. It really feels like the stylists here do hair when they 'want' to and 'when' they want to. There have been several other incidents where I've arrived to the salon an hour faster than the stylist. I understand that things happen, but the stylists could definitely do better. *UPDATE* To Kay - My 'new stylist' was out of town, so I thought that I would give you guys another try. I never harbor any ill intentions against those who have provided decent hair care services in the past. Nonetheless after this second chance, the sew in that I received was very disappointing. You used the cheapest hair you could find. You know this. The hair shedded everywhere and tangled up almost instantly. I took care of my hair with due diligence and used no product. Even after wrapping my hair up at night in a silk scarf, the hair still managed to fuse and mat. I lost $500. Also, I am sickened by your rebuttal to my last review regarding the cancellation policy. I paid the cancellation fee and that was settled. Also, For your information, the extra 'guest' that I had bought into the salon was my father - who - I had strongly urged him to come to your salon. Which from reading your rebuttal, you apparently have no respect for your clients whilst letting weed-smoking homies and your own family members into the salon. To those who are thinking about getting any services here: SAVE YOURSELF THE STRESS & MONEY AND AVOID THIS RATCHET SALON.

I don't think they've renovated the place since then and I don't think they ever should. My favorite things about 57th Street Beauty Salon are Esther's kindness, the fish tank, and the drowsy chic atmosphere. For a haircut, i'm always in and out of there in 30 minutes or less.

I am a black woman who has had service done at this salon with the same stylist over the last few…read moreyears. I've sometimes had a wash and blow or a two-strand twist. I have natural hair and it usually takes an hour from start to finish. Typically, at some point while the stylist is doing my hair the owner glances over and appears to be annoyed with the time it takes. So, this review is not about the stylist who does a good job, it is about the business itself. Yesterday, I got the two-strand twist and was told that it would be the last time that I could get the service done by the owner, a black man. When asked why, I was told something about people walking by...which I concluded that it was the optics he didn't like, i.e., the optics of a black woman with natural hair getting her natural hair done by another black woman. Apparently, it's not a look he wants his shop to have on 57th St., with the surrounding U of C community, too much ethnicity. This black owned shop has a preferred clientele which is either white male or female or Asian. Black hair is too ethnic and though we pay more it's not the image this business wants. In 2026, the adage, if you're white - you're right, brown - stick around, and if you're black, get back is what should hang on their business. I won't be back.

So far, I've gotten box braids and a few different crochet hair styles. I am very pleased with the service in the salon, and the over all professionalism from all of the stylist in the salon. They are professional, kind, and honest. I am tender headed so it would be easy for me to complain if I had to, but I've never had a complaint. There's a really nice older lady in the salon (not sure, but I think her name is Fantu - forgive me if messed that up), and once Chantel was unavailable to do my hair, so she said she would take me, I told her I was tender headed and could not take pain, so please do not braid my hair tight... she told me that I didn't have to worry about that, and she was right. Not only did not complain the entire time she did my hair, I didn't feel any tension on my hair/scalp, and my braids were beautiful. It's almost 3 months later, and I am still getting compliments. Every braid is the same size (long small box braids) and there's no tension. She did such a wonderful job, I went in last week to make an appointment for a re-do. Yes a re-do, I am very pleased!
