Salem Five Mortgage lost 3 stars in my review, not because they performed worse than my other, non-existent mortgage lenders. They lost 3 stars because realistic, appropriate expectations were not set throughout the process. I've been a consultant for the last 10 years. If a customer calls with a question, I will call back within a 'reasonable' amount of time. I'd consider 'reasonable' to be the same day. For emails, I'd generally reserve up to 24 hours. Salem Five does not appear to believe in managing customer communication. Many of my phone calls were un-returned, and my emails were often replied with single answer replies from mobile devices, whereas the questions themselves often required more of an explanation. I'd been asked to send multiple copies of the same form, because the analysts and loan officers involved were not communicating amongst themselves. I'm sure that, with interest rates being as low as they are, most mortgage companies are likely swamped with paperwork. At the very least, I would have preferred that the expectation be set up-front, that due to the current market conditions, some communications might take up to 48 hours. That likely would have gained at least another star for this review.

Absolute nightmare of an experience with these people. I lost out on a house that I had under…read morecontract for over a month due to their lack of communication and organization, lax attitude, and overall gross incompetence throughout the process. From day one, the communication was minimal at best, which I should have taken as a sign of things to come and moved on right then and there. It only got worse as the process went on, excuse me, I mean DRAGGED on. Here we were a month after signing the purchase and sales on a property and Salem Five still had yet to finalize my loan, even after requesting two separate extensions. After hearing excuse after excuse as to why the final loan package was not sent in, they propose yet ANOTHER extension. This, a third one ,for 3 more weeks. Come to find out, they didn't even know or remember when the original extension was up, which is absolutely baffling considering they were the ones who requested it. The seller of the house refused to sign an extension a third time, and opted to move on to another buyer. The banks attitude was basically "oh well", and offered absolutely nothing in the way of a resolution or any concrete reasoning as to why this process took so long. 3 Different closing dates in a month and a half, and NO paperwork had actually even been submitted for a mortgage commitment. Absolutely unacceptable as well as unprofessional. Upon speaking with another reputable mortgage broker(whom I should have used to begin with because I would have already closed on the house) and him reviewing my situation, I was told there was absolutely NO reason as to why I hadn't already closed on that house. Somebody clearly dropped the ball and isn't taking responsibility, great business model. Now here I am, starting the process over with a new mortgage broker(who already has more accomplished in one day than Salem Five could manage in 2 months), lost out on the house of our dreams, and still no actual reason as to why. Stay far away from this bank, I learned the hard way.
