A few weeks ago, without many symptoms or warning, we got the heartbreaking news that our beloved, 11-year-old baby kitty, Mayari, had aggressive, inoperable tumors. Over less than 2 weeks, she declined rapidly, and we agreed that if her quality of life seemed like she was suffering more than she was enjoying her cat life and cat pastimes, we would let her go. I'd never done this before and called 3 home euthanasia services with the best reviews. Of the 3 I talked to, we decided to go with Dr. Liz. She returned my call within minutes, answered all of my questions and concerns in great detail, and made me feel like she had all the time in the world to answer any questions I had. She offered for me to text her if I thought of anything later. She was also available the next day, and we didn't want this cat to be in pain for another 24 hours. She was very sympathetic and kind when I broke down over the phone. Dr. Liz arrived the next day and Mayari seemed comfortable with her. She explained her process and all of her medications to us, and brought a puppy pad to place under her, as well as a blanket to take her afterward (it meant a lot to us that it was actually a really nice blanket with colorful paw prints). It was more peaceful than I ever thought possible, with Mayari just appearing to painlessly fall asleep while my fiance and I were losing it. Dr. Liz then gave us a moment alone with her to say goodbye while she went to her car to put her supplies away and get the blanket. She then wrapped Mayari up and took her to Cal Pet Crematory (who have also been lovely to deal with), leaving us instructions for having the ashes delivered later. I was in no condition to function at all, and she was OK with me sending payment later that day. A week later, we received a lovely sympathy card with a heartfelt message that made me emotional. Sending a fur baby over the rainbow bridge was one of the most painful experiences I've ever had, but I'm grateful that we found Dr. Liz to be so compassionate, kind, and respectful in the process of letting her go. I won't go into the specifics of what led us to finally make the decision to ease our cat's suffering, but one thing we were definitely not going to do was take our Zoey back to the vet's to put her to sleep. After all that she was going through, adding further trauma to the process was simply not an option. With a little bit of research, we found Dr. Friedman, who immediately called us back to make a house call that afternoon. Right from the start, I felt like she understood what we were going through, and that I wasn't being judged in the least for this decision. When she arrived, she was even more considerate and comforting, explaining how the process would work and offering us choices as to how we'd prefer the treatment to be administered. They offered a 15-turn-25-minute quality of life call and told us that we could schedule a visit and they had no cancellation fee if we changed our mind. Dr. Friedman informed us that we'd likely have to book a couple of days in advance. They do not offer urgent after hours visits, nor weekends. We had a scare, and they responded the next morning saying that they had availability that afternoon. They were so good about giving us time and being efficient, it was really a commendable trait! They were willing to lift her 60 pound body on their own, but I was able to help. It was my partner's first experience with euthanasia, and they explained the process. They give a sedative before they give the lethal drug. I think it took my partner by surprise at how fast it was. Our dog was terrified of the vet, so we couldn't let that be her last experience on earth, in a sterile office. We are so happy with how everything played out. This review is so hard to write that I've started and stopped and I can't get it the way I want it to be; it just seems jumbled and like I'm babbling. But understand that I am still in a great deal of pain from the loss of my best friend. And I want you to know what an incredible job this vet did to make a painful experience as good as it could be. So please excuse my jumping around and maybe even including information you don't need. I just want you to know how perfect she was, and it's hard for me to get my thoughts together. If you need to help your pet pass from this life and go on to their next adventure, I can't recommend Dr. Friedman highly enough. My dog wasn't just any dog: he was my 12 year companion dog, the love of my life, my ride or die, my rock, my life. I watched both of my parents die of cancer, my best friend die, numerous other friends and family and NOTHING is more painful to me than this loss, losing THIS best friend. I don't know why, it just is. So I searched and searched for the right vet to come to my house and let him pass in peace, on his bed, with me holding him. My brother and his wife were there, watching, crying quietly. They said it was the most beautiful thing (and the saddest) they'd ever witnessed in their life. I lay on the floor and cradled my 95 pound dog, telling him how much I loved him (after he ate an ENTIRE bowl of vanilla ice cream). Dr. Friedman has the perfect presence. She speaks only when necessary, and in calm soothing tones. But she is strong and smart. Realize that she isn't just there to be sweet, although she is genuinely kind, she is giving the strongest medicine there is, and you want her to be confident and to know what she is doing. And she does. There can be some uncomfortable moments with these drugs (I'd researched so I knew) and she explained exactly what was going to happen (nothing terrible, you can read up on how euthanasia is done and you'll understand, she does it the same way every other vet does). For example, he might look back and forth with the first drug given; once I knew that, it wasn't upsetting. But he quickly fell into a deep sleep and started snoring, the most comforting sound EVER. I've always loved to hear him snore. That part was really a gift. He was so relaxed he snored; not every dog does that, but I was so happy mine did. She confidently yet gently explains everything that is going to happen so you aren't worried. Let her guide you. You can trust her. Because of my attachment to my dog, if she had done ANYTHING wrong, even the SLIGHTEST thing, it would've had an out-of-proportion effect on me and you would've heard about it. I'm telling you, it was PERFECT. She checked to see if his heart had stopped, which I appreciated. I mean, you want to really KNOW, right? And his heart kept going even after it should've stopped. I knew he was worried about me so he wasn't leaving, because I had started to cry (I was holding it together pretty good before then), and I felt like my crying was making him stay (his job was to take care of me, how could he leave if I was crying, right?). So I told him he could go. I said I would be okay, I promise, you can leave. And I FELT him leave his body; she checked, and his heart had stopped. She told me he was gone. And then she didn't flinch as I started to wail in grief. And I mean WAIL. She gave me time with him, as much as I wanted, and then she and my brother took him down the stairs and out to her car. At my request, she had previously made all the arrangements to have his body cremated, so there was nothing left for me to do but mourn. I'm giving you this much detail because you should know what happens so you are prepared. I've heard from friends and the procedure she used is exactly the same as the other vets; it's just the way she did it that was so perfect. My puppy dog got to leave this world with the love of HIS life (me) cradling him in my arms, in HIS bed, in HIS home, with his family surrounding him, and the nice, smart lady giving him the exact correct amount of medication so that he was withOUT pain, withOUT fear, withOUT distress of any kind (and he HATED going to the vet). He went to sleep with his love holding him, and then he gently left his body. We should all be so lucky. I am SO GLAD yelp took me to Dr. Friedman. I'm so sorry for those of you reading this, because I know that means you're facing losing the love of your life. You can trust her. I cannot recommend Dr. Liz Friedman enough. My 7 & 1/2 year old pittie was suddenly & rapidly declining from cancer- an absolutely crushing piece of news. My husband & I would have preferred to let our boy go at the animal hospital we frequented by the hand of the vet he knew & trusted for years, BUT participating in the experience is not an option during a pandemic. As much as I did not want to experience his death in my home, I could not bear the thought of dropping him off & waiting for a phone call. "Shopping" for last minute in-home euthanasia while my beloved dog lay suffering beside me was one of the most emotionally distressing experiences I have ever had. Everyone was booked or we were out of their service area. One person tried to sell us on "keeping him alive" for several months. And then we found Dr. Friedman. Though she was clearly in demand, Dr. Friedman made time to text & talk on the phone within a couple hours of contacting her. She understood our urgency to end our boy's agony as soon as possible & fit us into her busy schedule. As for our conversation about the event itself, she was empathetic & thorough in her explanation of what to expect. By the way, if you are considering this option during COVID, be prepared to choose an outdoor setting. I think that is more than fair. When the time came, Dr. Friedman greeted our boy warmly & let him sniff her equipment before getting started. Her bedside manner was delicate, cordial & professional. I felt completely comfortable crying in front of her, which was unexpected & much appreciated. The most dreaded moment imaginable was easy & peaceful for all involved- precisely what we wanted. For prospective customers, On Monday my wife and I were shocked with some sudden and very bad news about our dog. He had to be euthanized. We thought we would wait until friday. Yesterday we woke up and conditions had worsened so much that we knew we couldn't wait any longer. Let me tell you all about the horrors of phone shopping for in-home euthanasia. A lot of folks were too busy. And that makes sense. But it was incredibly painful to have to call so many people and explain what's wrong again and again. But we really thought it would be important to have this done at our home. Both so he's comfortable and so that we can also be there with him. I had one doctor on the phone say he could prolong his life by four months. We said "But our vet said that the real danger is if his mass ruptures." He said "oh yeah he's going to die but you gotta treat it like an egg that can break." Sounds like a pretty bleak life his was advertising for my boy. No thanks. Dr. Friedman displayed care and empathy from the first moment of contact. And she's the type of vet that I like. The only kind that there should be, to be honest. Our golden retriever, Biggs, had been diagnosed with osteosarcoma and given about a month. After four months had passed and we thought he had reached the end of the line. We were referred to Dr. Friedman and called her to the house to put our boy to rest. When she arrived Biggs jumped up and ran to her car to greet her. Obviously it wasn't time yet.
