Taking our girl home from the veterinary oncologist :(
Bridget G.

A few weeks ago, without many symptoms or warning, we got the heartbreaking news that our beloved, 11-year-old baby kitty, Mayari, had aggressive, inoperable tumors. Over less than 2 weeks, she declined rapidly, and we agreed that if her quality of life seemed like she was suffering more than she was enjoying her cat life and cat pastimes, we would let her go. I'd never done this before and called 3 home euthanasia services with the best reviews. Of the 3 I talked to, we decided to go with Dr. Liz. She returned my call within minutes, answered all of my questions and concerns in great detail, and made me feel like she had all the time in the world to answer any questions I had. She offered for me to text her if I thought of anything later. She was also available the next day, and we didn't want this cat to be in pain for another 24 hours. She was very sympathetic and kind when I broke down over the phone. Dr. Liz arrived the next day and Mayari seemed comfortable with her. She explained her process and all of her medications to us, and brought a puppy pad to place under her, as well as a blanket to take her afterward (it meant a lot to us that it was actually a really nice blanket with colorful paw prints). It was more peaceful than I ever thought possible, with Mayari just appearing to painlessly fall asleep while my fiance and I were losing it. Dr. Liz then gave us a moment alone with her to say goodbye while she went to her car to put her supplies away and get the blanket. She then wrapped Mayari up and took her to Cal Pet Crematory (who have also been lovely to deal with), leaving us instructions for having the ashes delivered later. I was in no condition to function at all, and she was OK with me sending payment later that day. A week later, we received a lovely sympathy card with a heartfelt message that made me emotional. Sending a fur baby over the rainbow bridge was one of the most painful experiences I've ever had, but I'm grateful that we found Dr. Liz to be so compassionate, kind, and respectful in the process of letting her go. I'm so sorry if you are reading this review because you are researching the same thing, but I highly recommend Dr. Liz.

I won't go into the specifics of what led us to finally make the decision to ease our cat's suffering, but one thing we were definitely not going to do was take our Zoey back to the vet's to put her to sleep. After all that she was going through, adding further trauma to the process was simply not an option. With a little bit of research, we found Dr. Friedman, who immediately called us back to make a house call that afternoon. Right from the start, I felt like she understood what we were going through, and that I wasn't being judged in the least for this decision. When she arrived, she was even more considerate and comforting, explaining how the process would work and offering us choices as to how we'd prefer the treatment to be administered. When it was all over, my wife and I were absolutely heartbroken, but we've said it then and continue to tell people that this was the absolute best way we could imagined handling our beloved cat's passing. It still pains us just about every night, especially when coming home to an empty house, but Dr. Friedman eased our conscience over a decision that could have very easily been a subject of regret and even more suffering.

This was my Cat, Kanye. He wasn't looking good in his final days. Liz helped him cross the rainbow bridge.

Liz Friedman is an amazing person and vet. I had to put my cat to sleep and she was empathetic and understanding, and gave me some time alone with the cat to process. She works with a small business crematory, who was also very respectful and loving when they delivered the ashes to me. I then received a very pleasant surprise in the mail, which was a card from Liz that included heart shaped paper/seeds that can be planted. This is a beautiful memory for me to cherish in order to continue to have my pet live on.

Ask the Community - Liz Friedman, DVM

Taking new patients?

You may want to double check. I don't think she is taking new patients for regular vet visits, but she is taking new patients for in-home euthanasia.

Are these pesticides absolutely necessary even when you take precautions like shirts and natural deterrants?

Is Dr. Friedman an holistic veterinarian? Does she push vaccines?

Holistic really means looking at the whole patient. It's not the same as a homeopath or a naturopath. I do practice western medicine. This is Dr. Friedman. I think vaccines are important for puppies and kittens. And advise on an individual basis as… Read more

I am sincerely grateful to all of them, especially Ashley, who took the time to hand-sketch my dog on the condolence card they provided! She's an amazing artist btw! I also have cats who continue to be cared for here, which gives me additional confidence remaining with their services. Thank you all at Grand Park Animal Hospital. I've been to other hospitals before where I sometimes felt overwhelmed by too many tests and recommendations, so I was worried at first. However, this hospital was completely different. They never pushed unnecessary treatments or exams, and they took the time to clearly explain why each treatment or recommendation was needed in a way that was easy for me to understand as a pet owner. That made me feel very comfortable and confident trusting them with my pet. Another surprising thing was how professional and detail-oriented the receptionists were. They carefully checked all the documents I needed multiple times to make sure everything was correct. Everyone here was honest, trustworthy, and genuinely caring!!!

Recently brought one of our dogs here for a serious issue. We never even saw the doctor, only spoke to them through a phone call even though we were at the office. After speaking to the doctor, the assistant presented the estimate very matter of factly. We declined one of the procedures. 3 hours later when it was time to pay they tried to charge us for the declined service even though it clearly was written on the estimate that it was declined. The absolute worse part is that after coming home, our other dog developed the same symptoms as our dog we had brought in. We called them back and asked to speak to the doctor for counsel. They had no idea who the doctor was. Finally we were told the doctor would call us back. We never received a call and our other dog passed away that night. Obviously we were gutted and when we took our deceased dog in for afterlife care the next day, the receptionist just shoves the brochure at us and gives us prices. Not even a simple sorry or modicum of concern. They dont care about your pets. I write this because I dont want someone else to potentially feel the pain we feel for waiting for these folks to call you back and having something horrible happen.

Finn is extremely shy and particular, and giving him fluids at home just isn't an option. We also made the intentional choice not to associate his one safe space, home, with anything painful. At the clinic, it sometimes takes three nurses to support him, one to gently hold him, one to feed him churro (his favorite distraction), and one to administer fluids. And they do it all with so much patience, compassion, and genuine care. Because of this team, Finn is not only stable, he's doing so well. Truly, I believe they've saved his life. My Dutchess and I felt very taken care of by them, and I felt that the tests they recommended were worth it. Unfortunately, about a week ago, after Dutchess suffered back to back seizures and a stroke, Dr. C was very upfront with me about recommending that I put my sweet girl to sleep, and that any further testing would just be a waste of money. I respect her honesty and care with which she delivered the news. I was hysterical, but I realized that she was right -- my baby would never be able to walk, run or jump as normal. It was up to me to give her a dignified goodbye. As I was crying in the exam room after I received the news, one of the techs, a smaller woman with black hair and a ponytail who was always so kind to my baby, came in and told me how good of a mom I was this whole time. Those words of kindness really touched my heart. They facilitated and accommodated me during this difficult time. I asked if they did at home euthanasia and Dr. C was kind enough to provide this service for me. She was empathetic and respectful of my feelings and even comforted me during and after the procedure. I even noticed the care with which she wrapped my baby's body after it. After she was carried out, Dr. C extended words of comfort and acknowledged the deep pain I was in. I will always remember her kindness. Thank you to the staff and vets at Little Tokyo Pet Clinic for the excellent care they have given Dutchess, and even myself. Because I had to go to work/could not cancel, I opted to do the day after. The estimate at MASH is $6,000-8,000 but here it was around $4500. I dropped my cat off early on Wednesday for his check-up, test, and surgery. Ultimately, they disagreed with the vets at MASH and said my cat had no crystals either in x-ray or in his urinalysis but did have a UTI which contributed to a second blockage (bladder overflow). They kept him for 48-hours to unblock and recover. This cost around $2K. At MASH where he had done the same 2 days earlier, it was $6K When MASH returned my cat, he was rough. He reeked of pee, his face was completely crusted/sticky with dried medicine, his fur was full of shed, and he was lethargic and in pain despite all the medicines. When Affordable returned him, my cat was bright and energetic. They clearly took care of him (he smelled like a baby wipe). It has been about a week since I brought him home, but I knew immediately that he was feeling better the day I picked him up. Now, he has completely recovered. Back to flinging himself around and meowing at 4 am. I am incredibly grateful to this hospital for their responsiveness, flexibility, affordability, and the kindness they showed my cat. I was worried that I would end up losing my cat (I had paid nearly $7K at MASH and he wasn't better) if he blocked again, but Dr. Barrera said that I should "give my cat a chance." He said that it is what he would do if it were his cat. I'm grateful that I did because it saved him from unnecessary surgeries. My cat was seen by Dr. Forsythe and Dr. Barrera and they both were very kind and gentle with him. I do see what some reviews mean about their disorganization. They forgot to call me to update me that he wasn't getting the surgery but would need to be hospitalized. I had to call them, but it turned out that Dr. Forsythe had gotten very sick. He returned my call despite being audibly quite sick and given that my cat needed the hospitalization anyways (and he was fine), I can see how it slipped through the cracks. They seem to accommodate all kinds of emergencies as best as they can, so I think a little disorganization is totally ok. I do think Dr. Forsythe needs a new phone. It sounded like he was calling from a remote cabin or from a phone that fell off a cliff. I had to listen to the voicemail at max volume more than once. I will likely return again/switch my primary vet to this one because it is closer, cheaper, and I had a great experience. And apparently, my shy scaredy cat enjoyed the attention he received here. There are some more "affordable" vets but in terms of quality/expertise, this hospital is well worth the price. When I called around to vets in Los Angeles for cystotomy prices, Ambassador Dog & Cat Hospital were the only ones that actually do it (many don't update their sites) that are near me (don't have a car) and their estimated price was also the same $4500. They are also roughly the same prices of my long-time vet (Beverly Robertson, wonderful, estimated $4K for procedure) and especially after going to MASH, these prices might as well be pennies. CareCredit is accepted basically everywhere, but what's nice about this hospital is that they accept ScratchPay which is a god send for emergency vet loans. This hospital is in an old building, but is still very nice and clean. Maybe not as sparkling as a brand new facility, but on par with the vets I've gone to over my lifetime.
