The animals were such a treat to experience and the guides educated us on species, habitat, breeding the valuable repopulation they are helping to accomplish! Upon arriving during the first day, no one greeted us, but rather a key was in an envelope for us to let ourselves to find and enter the unit. We read the instructions that stated not to enter the wild animal area unless we had a ticket for the tour. We had a ticket for the next day, but the first day we were wandering the part of the gardens we were allowed to be in, and then wandered into the gift shop on the other side of the driveway 50 feet from our unit. We were looking at the things to buy then were shocked to be yelled at: "You don't don't belong here unless you have a ticket!" The next day we enjoyed the tour, but the previous day's experiences told us the proprietors care little about their quality of customer service. Follow up: Business Owner Judy M's response to me confirms to me customer service is indeed seriously lacking at this business. To mention "stories in the news daily" related to people illegally entering animal enclosures in relation to my complaint is a gross mischaracterization of our actions as well as a personal attack. I clearly stated we were inside the gift shop when we were yelled at by an employee. No animals were present, as this is not an animal area. We know what animal enclosures look like. Other people were in the gift shop/museum as well. Google maps shows this gift shop 120 feet from our B&B room, not the 50 feet as I had previously stated. Apologies for not writing this review sooner, but I saw an ad for the Preserve and realized I had never submitted a review for its B&B after our July 2018 stay.

You can just walk up to the gravity cabin and spend as long as you want. It's like the Mystery Spot except there's no organized tour explaining everything and how things work. I did the train, which was okay, but it goes about every hour so it's more worth it if you are there closer to the departing time otherwise you might not want to wait an hour. Confusion Hill is a definite go to stop on a road trip along the 101.

I think part of the charm in a place like this is to just explore. There seemed to be an attraction called the Gravity House ($5 admission) at the top of confusion hill. There is a train that takes folks there from the parking lot ($10 a ride) up to the top. Since it wasn't running when we came, we had to skip the house since it would have been too difficult a walk. At the parking lot level, there's a small cafe selling standard fare (burger, hot dogs, fries). The souvenir shop is large, and all of ended up buying a few things to remember the red woods. Picture taking opportunities are plentiful, and we ended up taking a picture of the Worlds Tallest Freestanding Redwood Chainsaw Carving, 40' foot totem pole. And of course there are very tall redwoods all over the area.

I have been wanting to visit Safari West for quite some time. We were able to finally check them…read moreout during the recent Labor Day weekend. We arrived on Labor Day Monday. The safari zoo is located in the dry rural hills of Santa Rosa. Parking is accessible in the parking lot out front. We made reservations for the 2:00pm Safari Tour. Apparently weekend and holiday reservations are recommended to book early as it will fill up quickly for your party. The checking in process was fast and easy. Once you meet the guide, they let everyone in your jeep truck know the rules and expectations of the tour. Since it was a hot humid day, our party of 4 decided to sit underneath the roof of the jeep truck. The seats atop of the roof look tempting and adventurous but the sun was unbearable. Our safari tour was amazing. First of all I did not realize how huge the Safari West was. There was so many acres of vast land for the animals to roam around. We did not even see the glamping side of the property. Our guide Dano was knowledgeable and charismatic. He was attentive and answered all our questions. We were all engaged and could not tell the tour was 3 hours long. We were able to get a nice close up interaction with most of the animals. Some of the animals that stood out were the ostrich, giraffes, and the long horn bulls. The walk through bird sanctuary was fascinating. It was nice to see the vast variety of birds species in their habitat. Overall we enjoyed our experience at Safari West. The staff were nice and accommodating. I thought both the snacks shop and gifts shop were fantastic. It was a nice touch that wine and craft beer were being sold. There were a lot of unique souvenirs that were authentic and charming. The tour was worth the price in my opinion. I think of it in this way, it's a helluva a lot cheaper than flying out to Africa. I definitely recommend anyone interested to experience the Safari West at least once.

Had such a great time with my family!…read more We recently visited for one day and had a great experience. We got there early prior to our reservation and went to check-in. Upon checking in, we realized I made an error on the reservation date! I freaked out and was nearly in tears but they were willing to find time to accommodate us. I think it helped we went on a weekday but still we could have lost our tickets had they not been willing to help us. We got to do our pre-paid lunch as well which was soooo good! Next time I would love to try dinner. All the animals were out and visible and my kids loved seeing them all.

Folks show up early to stake their claim for prime space, even before the bands show up to start getting ready for their shows. I was quite impressed with the play equipment the City installed for the community, as well as the fact that they maintain restrooms for public use. I can only hope the concerts continues on for many years to come.
