This restaurant was great, for such a posh looking restaurant it's really affordable! I ordered…read moresoup for 4.95 and a sushi starter for 7.95 and was fully satisfied for only 13 euro, since they give bread too. My friends ordered risotto, which looked really good but the serving was quite large so they ended up taking half home. The menu is pretty diverse, from a huge list of entrees, burgers, mains like salmon, chicken dishes, stew etc., a burger menu and finally dessert! I wouldn't say cheap but not expensive either. We all paid about 13~16 each for dinner. The atmosphere is pretty classy and romantic with the dim lights, red chairs and candles, so it's quite formal dress. There's also a bar and a good cocktail and drinks menu. The service was excellent. The girl tending to us was really attentive and checked up on us ever so often. By the way, we came on a Monday evening so it was reeeaaaally quiet, like us and 5 other people. I'm sure it would be more lively on the weekends, which I'd say would be a better time to go. But Drogheda is pretty small and quiet in general. Overall, nice atmosphere, good service and affordable.

From the outside it looks like the sort of place you would take granny and Grandad for their Sunday dinner, and indeed you will find a whole pile of the over 60s brigade in the Diamonds and for very good reasons, the grub is fresh, tasty and very reasonably priced. A great selection from Breakfasts, sandwiches, full dinners, fish, chicken, burgers etc and plenty of side dishes to tempt you. This is a really busy popular spot with the locals and it deserves its great reputation. On Sundays and holidays there will be a queue to get in. We ventured out into Carlingford town on a Saturday night in deepest darkest January. We had not…read moremade a reservation, it was off season after all. Magees had been our restaurant of choice, but when we entered, it was very apparent that off season it was not - ooops. That said the hostess informed us that we were in luck and that they had one table left - hurrah! Lesson of the day - always book a table. Service started off really well, with drinks and food orders taken really promptly. The starters came out and no sooner had the starter plates had been cleared, our mains had arrived. Wow, prompt indeed. I ordered the crispy skinned salmon, which was quite tasty. All mains came with a portion of potato gratin, however the portion size of the potato gratin that came with my salmon was very small. Two inches squared I reckon and this is not an exaggeration. When my main arrived I immediately asked for a portion of bread. I hope this would have indicated to them that the portion size of my main course was not up to scratch, not for 18.50 EUR anyway. The bread was slightly stale soda bread, just meh but it filled a gap. As I said at the beginning, the service started off really well? However after the mains were done it became non-existent. We peered hopefully at all staff on the floor but couldn't make eye contact with any of them. The server who had cleared the table after our mains even asked if we wanted to see the dessert menus, which we said yes to. But he must have forgotten about us as he continued to deliver more food to other tables. Finally noticed, we got the dessert menus with apologies and I ordered the White Chocolate Surprise cocktail for 8.50 EUR, it was ok for the price I guess. But I wouldn't order again. They have something good here Magees, but it just lacks something in execution. They want to charge 18.50 EUR for a small main course, they need to up their game in terms of quality and service.

Aside from great food here this restaurant is a…read morelesson to anyone who wants to go into the hospitality industry to easily learn how to get it right. Start, as they have, with top notch, fresh ingredients. Next cook the very best ingredients simply, and with passion. I could see the other happy diners receive their dishes and the food just looked so delicious. Be sure you complement the key ingredients on the plate with the supporting cast for instance I had Dublin bay prawns pil pil (€11). These are the best cold water prawns and they are just top notch; as warm water prawns don't ever come close in taste. This place served them up with finely sliced fresh red chilli (green chilli wouldn't pair as well) and a garlicky oil that delivered a delicious spice kick with a tangy after-burn mouth feel. The spicy balance was just right and what I really liked here too was their judicious use of garlic oil. I've had prawns pil pil in places where the prawns were over-cooked to dry, hard lumps swimming in copious vivid bright red pimento peppery oil. Here they served me up two types of bread - one seeded & lightly toasted that I used to dip into the chilli garlic oil so giving me a bit of crunch and light, wonderful wheaten bread that I heavily buttered with salted butter and a side salad. My wife opted for their seafood chowder which was crammed with fish and delicious. She also got the delightful wheaten bread. We are so used to 'white' potato based chowder - it was tomato based here so viva la difference. We also had very good cappuccinos (€3) and these came with a little home-made shortbread on the side and this too was a really nice touch. Service was friendly but not overbearing. I've two observations; the raw sliced red onion with the salad on my plate was acrid and as a result it clashed with the other tastes. This is easily resolved though - just soak the fresh sliced onion in cold water (or vinegar) for 10 minutes - or if you want to be posh instead soak them in lime or lemon juice for 10 minutes. The second observation: I didn't notice sea salt on the table, but perhaps it was there and I we were too engaged in my dining experience. In short this place is wonderful and well worth finding even if you are only passing by this town.
