One of the wonderful things since the former BNAS was decommissioned by the Navy is that much of the infrastructure is now available to the residents of Brunswick, where I now live. This includes places like this. While not fancy or particularly high-tech as fitness facilities go, there is a gym for basketball, a small fitness room with treadmills, free weights, and other cardio equipment. There are also a host of classes ranging from yoga, pilates, barre classes, etc. I've done some of their beginner's yoga classes and they're great! What I like about the Landing as the days get colder and I'm not going to get out on my bike or run outside, is that I can drop by (it's 3 miles from my house) and find a treadmill available in the morning or early afternoon. After spending the morning looking at a computer screen, I'm due for a dose of endorphins. Oh, and the staff here are just amazingly friendly and welcoming. After a recent experience with another fitness facility on the other side of town that made me feel like I was imposing on their little clique of insiders, this is refreshing and how I want to have my doses of fitness administered--with a smile and a friendly greeting. Is that so hard to do?

    Building Block Day Care Center

    Building Block Day Care Center

My daughter was at Building Blocks for just over three months, and it did not go well. During the…read moreinitial interview process, I shared that my daughter has autism and is mostly non-verbal. I was assured that the center was equipped to deal with this, but they were not. The kids play in the water all summer long and I sent a bathing suit and towel but it never got used. The directors posted photos of my daughter's class playing in the water and doing yoga on the parent FB page, but my kid was noticeably absent each time. I sent underwear daily but they made no attempt to participate in her potty training. I frequently picked up my daughter and found her barefoot and wandering around without any engagement from the teacher who was in the room/area. To me, this indicates that they were not watching her as closely as they should. CDS informed me that the center never returned their calls and emails and I had to intervene and beg for follow-up each time there was an IEP meeting or a speech therapist, occupational therapist, etc. looking to set up services. The owner was rude to me for asking her to follow up, and then the daycare director participated in the Zoom meeting and spoke about my child like she is some kind of parasite. She is completely insensitive and should not be working with children, especially not ones with special needs. One day I heard her mutter a sarcastic comment about a little boy under her breath when she didn't realize I had come in behind her. That is the day I began my search for a new school for my kiddo. With that said, there are a few staff members who truly seemed to care about the children and want to see them succeed. I don't know how that will be possible under terrible leadership. The last straw was when they demoted my daughter into the next classroom down from her original class, without even having a conversation with me! They didn't send home a letter or anything. One day they just told me to hang her bag in a different room and that was that. This center may be fine for neurotypical children, but if your child has any kind of special need, delay, IEP or can't speak up and tell you what goes on, you should think twice before sending them to Building Blocks. Three days into her new school, my daughter is thriving! Speech therapy was set up on day 1 due a timely response to CDS. On our way home on day 1, daughter started naming things: house! flower! sun! This is a HUGE deal for my girl. She has also been much less hungry and grumpy when I pick her up each day. We made the right decision.

I normally don't write reviews but I'm hoping that this will help families in making their child…read morecare choice. In my first week of starting at Building Blocks I noticed that several teachers had left, teachers that I had been told were at Building Blocks for years. This was the first red flag. I was greeted by parents of infants with very concerned looks on their faces, they had absolutely no idea that I was their childs new teacher. I had to introduce myself, give a little back story on my experience/education, and explain that I was their childs new teacher as these parents were cautiously handing me their six week to six month olds (several parents were VERY upset and had told me that I was the fifth infant teacher in just a few months). Putting your little one into child care is nerve-racking to begin with, no parent wants to hand their baby off to someone they don't know. The fact that the owner had not informed these parents of the changes (a new teacher) was the second red flag. A few months went by, several other teachers left or were "let go", MANY parents and their children left. Several rumors went around through staff and parents about scary/unsafe situations, I am not going to get into detail in this review but everything said matched up and was very much true. I stayed for many months and would have continued to stay due to the fact that I genuinely loved any child that came into my classroom, I knew that I was the one taking care of them and that they were safe with me. I was abruptly let go due to lack of communication between the owner, her husband, and their director. I had a serious family emergency and the owners husband was in one of his "moods" and decided to let me go because I spoke up about how horribly they treated their staff. Several parents left after I was let go when they realized the owner was lying about how things ended with me (they knew I would not just up and leave those babies) as well as several other staff members. I am not one to speak badly about any business or person but I can honestly say that I would never send my children to this place.

At three and a half he can recognize 20 out of 26 letters and has 100% number recognition numbers 1-10. The facility is always clean and the staff is always welcoming and informative. They also use an app that allows you to have complete contact with your child's staff through out the day. They use keyless entry, every child has a code, you don't have the code you don't get in. I don't worry about my child's safety, emotional or educational status while his with them. They do field trips and have educational (and fun) guests. My son has a ball.
