My two pet peeves about this Y; the equipment is pretty dated and seems to be geared mainly to men and the female lifeguard. Almost every time I got to swim she barks at me for something. Like, before I have a chance to set my towel down she's yelling at me to rinse off. She makes my most mellow part of the day really uptight. Otherwise, quite a lovely establishment especially for Midcoast Maine.

They allow toys which the kids love. Only knock on it, is that it can get crowded. The gym is a pretty large with a walking track as around it too. They have a little gym/activity area where kids can use some monkey bars and roll on activity mats. Their "basketball" gym is outdoors but is covered. It's a great for 3 seasons, but not built for winter. I have found it to be a great spot. 100 dollars a month for the entire family which I think is a great value.

But, I found out that the Casco Bay YMCA was having an open house, where you could have a 2 week membership for free AND it was only a 5 minute drive from my new digs. Cool. Upon arrival I waited patiently while the desk associate talked another customer through a lengthy list of classes and how strenuous they are. She was apologetic and allowed us to enter the gym area to start our workout, then check in with her later. I thought this was great customer service, so, thank you. The workout area was clean and not crowded. I was able to use 2 different machines and the weight room without having to wait. There is also a nice, small, indoor track to use for walking or cooling down. On the way out, the person at the desk encouraged us to join, explained the benefits, and also told us a membership there included all other surrounding YMCAs (although I thought once you joined the Y you could go anywhere in the country, so that was a bit confusing). She was very friendly and seemed to genuinely enjoy her job, a trait which I appreciate in the customer service industry. This Y has a pool, extensive workout area, outdoor basketball courts, and a lot of weekly classes. If you are in Freeport and want a nice place to do any of these activities, I wouldn't hesitate to go here. Also check online for swim hours and other activities that are happening that day. They have family events throughout the year.

It's been a while since I've been to a gym that I actually saw equipment in which I had to figure out what it was so everything here my opinion is very progressive. Absolutely one of the best gyms/fitness centers I've ever visited. I'm currently enrolled in small…read moregroup training and we are working on deadlifts, back squats, pull ups and ring rows, as well as classic CrossFit cardio-based moves (rowing, assault bike, running, etc.). My coach/trainer, Seth, is amazingly helpful and patient in teaching me how to do handstands against the wall (and eventually without the wall). He has a very supportive, encouraging, easy-going personality that really motivates me to do my best. He routinely asks me what moves I want to work on, and we have already covered rope climbs and handstand preps, to name a few. I really enjoy the small group vibe as it gives us a chance to get to know each other better, and we have more time with our coach than we would in a regular CrossFit class. Seth has helped me get to the point where I feel like I can just jump into a regular CrossFit class whenever I want. I'm already almost up to a PR in deadlifts and it has only been a few months (and I took over a year off). It is a bit pricey (I'm paying $240 for 8 classes a month), but I still think it is worth it. You really are getting a lot of time with the coach, even in the small group setting. Highly recommended.

I submitted an inquiry about learning more about Beacon and heard back within the same day and was able to meet the owner and get an assessment scheduled quickly. After the assessment, I jumped right into classes and loved it. Well out-fitted, a great community of friendly and motivating members, and awesome coaches -- Beacon has it all! I think what I appreciated the most about Beacon is the team's attitude towards fitness; fitness can enrich your life and make living your life easier and better. After doing CrossFit for years at a previous box, I was so used to a culture of just wanting to throw around as much weight as possible with no regard to form and listening to my body. At Beacon, I felt supported to really focus on how to properly move my body, how to best challenge my body, and really how to have fun with CrossFit again. Thanks for such a great five weeks, Beacon, I hope I'll be able to come back again soon!

Pros: You can use the hotel's valet parking for free when you use the spa The staff is SUPER friendly and helpful There are cushy robes and slippers to use if you want The space is lovely and tranquil There is iced cucumber water and hot herbal teas at the ready The women's locker room is an oasis of fluffy towels, strong showers and provides shampoo, lotions, hair dryers etc... There is a sauna in both the co-ed section and in the women's locker room There is a BIG jacuzzi hot tub that comfortably seats eight adults Cons: The gym space is cramped and only has a few treadmills. The treadmills are also tight in together so it feels like you are WAY too close to the person on the next treadmill The TV screens for the treadmills are mounted onto the wall. When you turn one off or try to change a channel, you often end up messing up someone else's screen While the robes are SUPER luxe, they are really for spa services and not at all for wearing in and out of the hot tub. There are towels for that, but hotel guests seem to have terry robes for the jacuzzi Overall, I am definitely happy with the hot tub as I have an almost constant interest in floating up to my chin in hot water during the winter. On the other hand, I was hoping to kick start some new year cardio, and that has proven a bit more awkward. Will I pay another $125 to renew for another month in early February. Hmmmm.....not sure......
