Recently a friend suggested I try Oshin Japanese Restaurant for a good sit-down lunch (or dinner) and now, I would go no place else in the city. Hidden from the main thoroughfare, upstairs in Koala House on Adelaide Street, Oshin seems to have been "found out" by suits doing their business lunches, an indication of quick service and reliably good fare. Oshin is also an authentic-feeling place, with good ambiance (their Japanese waitresses are friendly and wear kimonos) and great value for money. There are so many delicious-looking things on the menu that it's hard to choose. I managed to settle on the Yakizakana (grilled mackerel steaks with rice and soy) and my friend had the Tensashi Lunch Box, which comes with an assortment of tempura, sashimi and salad. Both were filling, especially as all dishes come with a complimentary starter of good miso soup and an "amuse-bouche", a taste of something fresh and quirky. I've never been to Japan, but a friend of mine has and she gives Oshin 5 stars! Note: there are also free minties on the counter!

You might look at the online menu and think that they wouldn't offer its full scope at each outlet, but they seemed to have a huge variety of dishes, from South Indian to various Indo-Chinese and Indo-Mexican fusion dishes to some random pasta for people who don't like Indian I guess. Being adventurous, I tried some idli (lentil-rice cakes) in a Chinese sauce, which was pretty tasty. Mildly spicy, albeit nothing scary. The vada dipped in sambar to start was solid enough as well. And they seemed to be running a decent restaurant. Between the out-front service and the slightly visible kitchen area in the back, there were quite a few people here actually preparing food, and it was correspondingly good. It was cleaner than a lot of places. It was also evident that they could tell I was in a hurry, and they got out my dishes just in time for me to catch a bus. Probably four star food, but given the low level of service I've become accustomed to at Indian places here (and anywhere really), the overall dining experience was quite good. What else would I ask of them? Offer some tofu, maybe, add in online ordering. I wish it wasn't out in Morningside, but nonetheless, I imagine I'll give them another shot at some point.

A lot of people seem to order the noodle stir-fry dishes which are indeed very appetising but I particularly like the noodle soup with braised beef dish, mainly because the beef is sooooo tender and packed with flavour. Phone orders are encouraged, and there is a convenient car spot right out the front for dash-and-carry lunchtime pick-ups.
