If you're child has special needs I suggest hiring an Education Advocate to help you because the school isn't proactive in helping these challenged students. My daughter has dyslexia and they did not advocate assistance even after we paid to have a psychological education profile done by an outside educational psychologist. Unless your kid is a mess in school, they do little to help. Getting her first 504 was a battle because she had "good grades"

I have a friend (I won't share her name) who has a daughter about to start second grade…read more Today, a teacher named Taralyn (unsure of spelling), called my friend to "touch base" with my my friend's daughter about said daughter and her IEP. This call was on speakerphone, so I heard the entire conversation. I was blown away. Words cannot describe how impressed I was with this woman. Extremely professional and also extremely empathetic. Apparently she has 16 years of experience and is new to the district, but she also has a Master's Degree in something my friend's daughter needs a little extra help with. In order to preserve privacy I won't go into detail, but the young lady is going through a family tragedy right now, and when her mother mentioned that, this wonderful teacher spoke at length about how she would be caring and accommodating. I am not one to normally leave Yelp reviews -- I leave 1 or 2 a year -- but when someone really blows me away, positively or negatively, I do. This is one of those times. I wish I had a teacher that wonderful when I was in second grade.
