They are gaslighting me trying to make it seem like this was my fault, when they clearly went back on their word. No integrity whatsoever, and a slap in the face to working parents trying to do the best for their kids. I emailed this gym to request a payment extension because I am a single parent with limited income. They informed me that the sign up form outlines when payment is due, which I had accepted and therefore I planned to just find a way to pay because I want my daughter to remain in the class. I'm not a cheapskate nor trying to get out of paying for anything, I just had misread the form and thought I'd try to see if they were willing to work with me. The email said I have by the end of the day the following day to pay. Then, the following day at 9:30 am, I get an email saying that they already suspended my account. So much for giving me til the end of the day to make the payment happen. I find that to be so rude and disheartening, but I guess that's what happens when a company cares more about making money than it's community. Lesson learned.

The fees are pretty reasonable (~$400 for him + another ~$200 for me) for the year, and the facilities have all of the typical weight and cardio equipment you would expect from a gym. You can also partake in various exercise classes, and schedule reasonably priced group or individual sessions with a trainer. The basement location does not make for the most scenic workouts, but there are plenty of TVs around the cardio area. The pool, while small (5 lanes, 60' long), is an awesome bonus and rarely crowded. Actually, the whole facility is rarely crowded! With the exception of peak after-work hours you practically never have to wait for a machine. Sometimes on the weekends you have the place almost to yourself. Since they are not open to the public, I have experienced far fewer "gym creeps" here than at other facilities. It's mostly med students, docs and nurses looking to get in a good workout and get on with their day. My biggest gripe is that I wish they would open on the weekends before 10 am. Failing that, I wish they would actually be open and be ready for business by 10 am instead of looking for the keys or the lifeguard.

But the good kind of sore? I took Emily's 7:30 am boot camp class and while the playlist was straight fire, my thighs were also on fire. We were a small group, so we were able to all get personal attention on form. Emily had laid out what we were going to do and made use of the timers, so I didn't have to count down the seconds myself. We used lots of different equipment (kettlebells, weights, jump ropes, ergs) and it made the 45 minutes go by a lot faster than I usually find at these types of classes. The space is huge, literally an open box, with lots of equipment. It seems some people just stop by and use the equipment, and they also have classes. 10 packs come out to $14 a class and 20 packs $12. They also have a 21 days for $49 pack for new members (which is a great deal) and other student and military discounts. 3x a week is $90 and (this is how they get you at the Movie theater with popcorn sizes) for only an extra $15 you can get unlimited (with 6 month commitment). For a bit extra you can get all access passes. But before you box Open Box into the Crossfit box, check out the upstairs yoga studio! Unlike many gyms where the yoga class is in the same room and its very difficult to feel zen, the yoga studio here is set off, sound proofed, painted a calming color, and has great manduka mats and blocks. I did a private workshop with Emily here and my friends and I had such a good time, she's great at teaching inversions and super encouraging! Open up your mind (and wallet) to Open Box, and you may just open up your heart to them, along with, probably, your hips.

What you are gonna get though is a whole lot of what 12 year boys find super cool. Lots of sweating, competition to be better than their friends, a boom box playing techno-ish music, minimalist equipment that resembles what they might see in the city. They got to do flips into the foam pit for goodness sake - what could be better? Add in party hosts that can actually DO everything they are showing the boys and a healthy dose of "Hey I saw that on TV on American Ninja Warrior" and you have a winner! The party hosts spent about 75% of the time training and instructing the boys and then the last 25% was free time and an obstscle course. They were not stingy on the start and end time and we had the gym to ourselves. Everyone gets a free week of classes to boot. This is an awesome place to have a party for teenage or so boys, but know what you are walking into and don't expect a bunch of extras. I would also recommend keeping the number of attendees on the low side. 9 was just about right - more than 10 would have resulted in too much "line" time.

There are almost always children around, from grade schoolers all the way down to babies who are watching their pro dads (it's usually dads). From aspiring golden glove yunguns to fit older gentlemen, this gym is open to anyone who loves boxing and wants to work hard improving their skills. As a woman boxer, I felt at home almost from day one. I'm usually the only woman training, but I've never felt that to be a problem. Almost without exception, the men who train there are gentlemen and have treated me both with respect and friendship. Again, all that matters is a love of the sport. As a student, I disappear for months at a time during breaks, but whenever I'm back in Philly, I can't wait to get back to the gym. Having such a solid community makes you commit to your training. If my trainer Khalil weren't there asking me when I was coming in next, I don't know how many times I would have just opted to stay home and work a little longer or just laze around. This place makes training a lifestyle.
