I don't think I'll ever be able to write a review to show just how wonderful this place is. My family had been going the past few years and because of work I hadn't been able to partake in the magic until this year. It's a cute little Christmas tree farm nestled in the woods. The owner and all the staff are polite, cheerful, genuinely friendly and so very helpful. They have trucks to take you up to where the trees are and you get to pick one out and cut it yourself. It was such a fun experience for my almost 2 year old who loved the cars and running around in the woods. Obviously prices will be higher than just going to Home Depot for a free but it is so worth it for the fun outdoor experience and memories my family got to make. Needless to say I was over joyed with my experience and can't wait to go back next year. read more

There was a little bit of weight to get into the location due to one lane roads. Once you're down in the canyon where the office and parking are located it's absolutely beautiful. It's also definitely cold. Wear a jacket. The rides around the property in the back of old Willy's pick ups to cut your own tree. It was a really neat experience for the family. The owner and all of her staff were very friendly and helpful. I recommend checking it out. read more

Little Bear Tree farm is the absolute best tree farm out there. It is an entire experience, and not just a tree farm. It has quickly become an annual tradition for my family. We always pack everybody into the van, my parents and kids in tow, and head up the 80. It is worth the drive. The first thing you notice when driving down the driveway is the smell of the big fire pit in front of the house. They have a friendly driver who drives an antique pickup truck with seats in the back up the hill so you don't have to walk forever. We then walked all over the mountain trying to find the perfect Christmas tree, and we found it! After getting another ride from the pickup driver, we all purchased some hot cocoa and candy canes to warm up. We then found out that our tree was so big that it could not be netted. We also have a brand new minivan, so everyone was concerned that we would destroy the top of it without it being netted. Holly, the owner, surprised us all by telling us that she did not want to risk damaging the tree by netting it and also did not want us to risk our minivan, so she would be bringing it down the hill for us to our home in her pickup truck. We went to little bear tree farm for the first time last week. What a great experience! They were so kind and helpful. We were there close to closing and they didn't rush us, we're really helpful once we selected our tree. The tractor ride to the trees was a blast, and the kids loved seeing the highland cows. Highly recommend. Trees were reasonably priced, they wrapped it and gave us twine to secure it for the ride home. We will be returning for sure!! It's a must try for the holidays. read more

I have been coming here since I was a kid. If you're looking for instagram worthy gigantic trees then this isn't your place. It's a conservative county... so if you're scared of non mask wearers then stay in the city (we won't be sad). Great people and great memories to be had. What a lovely place. We went up on a soggy Sunday afternoon. Helpful, joyful people. Although we hiked for over an hour, we couldn't find the perfect tree. Why?? Because it was sitting in their precut area!!! Now it sits in our home and we absolutely love it. We will be sure to go up again next year. Selected this farm because of their covid precautions listed on the website. Waited over an hour to finally arrive to 75% of unmasked guests. You have to get into an open air truck to actually drive up to the trees, I quite literally saw truck loads of unmasked strangers. I am beyond disappointed. Only had port a potties after an hour of waiting, the guy before me pooped on the toilet seat. 0/10 would not recommend. read more

We got a ride to the top of the mountain on an old 4wd jeep. They have saws there for you to use. Great spot for this! read more

For the past 23+ years my family has trekked out to Little Bear Tree Farm to chop down our own Christmas tree. The cozy, warm, farm feels practically like home. It's a simple concept that is a good way to get outside and experience some holiday joy. It turns the "task" of putting up that tree into a fun family outing, and I'd definitely suggest checking this place out. It was fun at 5, and 15, and it sure still is at 23. When you arrive, you'll have the option of either walking up the hill or riding in the back of a truck. During busy times there is a bit of a line, but it usually doesn't take too long. Everyone piles on the wooden benches they've made in the back and they drive you up the side of the mountain - a bumpy, roller coaster of ride that proves entertaining. Whether it be watching the little ones giggle as they bounce up and down, or watching your mom hold on for dear life, or watching dad laugh at how worried mom is - it's all good fun. Once you get to the top, you pick up a saw and head off to hunt down the perfect tree. There are trees right by where you land, but there are also soooooo many trees to be discovered by wandering around. The selection is huge, and you're actually exploring real woods instead of just a tree lot. One of my favorite things about getting our own tree is that we can select any kind we want. Trees at a tree lot tend to be more selected for looking perfect, but when you're picking your own in the woods you can find ones that naturally grew in some funky way - that Charlie Brown tree. One year we got a tree that had been chopped down higher on the stump originally, and grew back two trees from there. We cut below that point and got a two-for-one tree - when we put it in the tree stand, it spilt into two tops (we had a star AND an angel that year). Then, you get to saw the tree down yourself! It's kind of takes awhile, but physically cutting down your own tree feels pretty fantastic. Then the boys drag it back to the truck, pull it on, and they'll net it at the bottom for free (and help you put it on your car). Besides the trees, there are other little things that make Little Bear special. A stream you can feed fish, a big bonfire you gather around with other visitors, little walks to go on. The gift shop is super cute, full of classic Christmas items that remind you off Grandma's house. The ornaments and knick-knacks. We always go for the snacks though - hot fudge, hot chocolate, snickerdoodles, and a whole assortment of other treats. There is also a little desk where kids (or young adults that like to pretend they're still kids, aka me) can write letters to Santa. AND A GIANT SEE-SAW. There was one or two years as a teenager they took it out, but it was back last year. It's really just a tree trunk they turned into a see-saw, but it's the most massive see-saw I've ever been on and it makes my life every time I come. (Trees are slightly more expensive than a lot, but it's worth the experience. Pricing is done by the foot so measure before you cut it down - you can use the saw as a reference. Also, consider that this trees continue to grow if they don't get picked - there isn't any waste from unwanted trees). read more

Their "cut your own"tree selection was not great & was really spread out so my kids lost interest which was disappointing. We went because they advertised miniature donkeys & cute cows but we drove by on the way up the hill & down & that was it. The worst part was how expensive the tree was. I came here recently and would come here as a kid with my family. Tucked away between the Tahoe National Forest and Colfax is a small but inviting tree farm. Get here early because there ends up being a line to find parking (which is sparse). Once you are parked you'll notice a stream that runs through the property with fish, a fire to keep yourself warm, a small room where they're selling ornaments and food, and a truck carrying people to and from. Before boarding the truck you're given a saw to cut down your own tree. You literally are taken up some hills in the back of an old truck. Holding on for the bumpy ride is expected but once you're out you can find the perfect tree waiting for you and your family. Once you've walked the distance to Mordor and selected your tree. You board a truck heading down the hills. I recommend getting an ornament or two and a snack from the concession stand. This trip can be somewhat physical, so folks unable to walk up hills should stay near the fire with some hot chocolate to stay warm. read more

We went the day after thanksgiving and it felt like being at a super spreader event. We were in the car for 2 hours waiting to get in and when we got there the employees either had their masks down or weren't wearing them at all and 70% of the other costumers weren't wearing masks at all. Upon getting there we saw people packed tightly into a line to get on trucks to go up the mountain. People were squeezing onto the backs of the trucks with people outside of their group. I have never been in a place that was so negligent. We thought okay well we'll just pick a precut tree and leave but then we learned that you have to pay inside the building that was also tightly packed with people. We left with no tree. read more

I wish there was a lower rating to give this place. Took us over an hour to get in. Once in, the parking was horrible, but now after having over an hour invested in the drive and another hour invested waiting in line we continued. The shuttle took us up to the tree farm that consists of primarily 95 percent small trees that are not ready to be cut. We ended up finding a tree that we had no idea even what the price of it was until we got back down to the main building and found out 10 to 25 per foot depending on the size. I would buy a tree from a lot before I would go back to this place. Save yourself some time and money and go to Apple Hill, much more selection, better prices and better trees. read more

We come here every year to chop down a tree. They are located at the bottom of a canyon so bring a jacket as it can get pretty cold. They have an amazing location with a small pond, creek, large fire pit and a little store. You can start walking around to find your tree or you can hop on one of their 50 year old Jeep trucks and they will bring you up to the top of the mountain. They have silver tips, Douglas fir, and noble fir (maybe more...). Prices are higher than you would spend at Home Depot but about the same as a tree lot around town and you get a much better experience. I think they are priced at around $8 per foot. They also net your tree for free and provide the saws. It is a great place to bring a picnic and they sell hot drinks and baked goods. Kids and adults of all ages love this place! read more

We've been looking for a tree farm where we can cut our own tree. Fortunately we drove a little further uphill and found little Bear Tree farm. We had just returned from the snow and it was pouring rain. But we were determined to find our tree and Little Bear did not disappoint. The staff was super helpful, we even got a ride to the top of the farm to find a better tree, and a simple phone call later a truck is back at the pick up shack to take us and our tree back down. The kids had a lot of fun picking a tree, it was a wonderful first time tradition that we will continue from here out. As for pricing, they are no more expensive than most tree places/lots and your tree is fresh! read more

This place is pretty cool and the staff is very friendly. There's only one problem... the trees. We first went in 2015 the day after Thanksgiving and hiked all over the property before settling on a very thin "Charlie Brown" tree. We thought it was fun. We went back this year (2016) and found the same thing. Acres and acres of trees that are basically see-through. Its a bummer such an awesome place is stuck with whatever variety of tree that is growing there. We drank some hot cocoa, sat by the fire, and went home without a tree. read more

I am so excited that I had the opportunity to go see this Christmas Tree Farm as they begin the preparations for this up and coming season. It is a magical place with a darling gift shop, a huge fire pit, a fishing pond with trout the size of a small VW (wink), and the family could not have their heart in it more then they do. Up the hills, down the paths, a fleet of old jeep trucks will escort you to the perfect location to begin your families tradition. This place is almost magical. This is the kind of place where you envision cutting down your Christmas tree. They have a huge waterfall and a large pond. They have cute bear accents on the property. It is down a small back road in Alta, Ca. You almost think you are going the wrong way. You drive up and there is a large fire pit in the middle. They have a small store that sells homemade goods and Christmas decorations. Once you get there, they take you up to the "forest" in a bouncy truck. They give you a saw that is 5 feet tall and you hike around looking for the perfect tree. You can only cut down trees 5 feet and above. When you find that tree, you cut it down and drag it back to where they dropped you off. The truck comes back to get you and your tree. When you are ready to check out, they wrap the tree in netting. The staff were very helpful. It was a very sweet experience. It was our first time cutting down our tree and it was very pleasurable. We went the week before Thanksgiving (on purpose), to avoids the crowds, but I would assume after Thanksgiving it would be pretty busy. read more

We had so much fun exploring and searching for a tree. After a while she came looking for us and took us to another area. We eventually found the perfect 8.5 foot tree.
