I went for the first time there to get my Christmas tree yesterday and had such a wonderful time! It was so fun to explore the ranch to find a tree, and we found a perfect one. The couple who runs the tree farm are lovely, and we found some really cute stuff in their shop as well. My sister, brother-in-law, and little niece were all with me and they all loved it. First time here to cut our tree Sunday after moving to Sac recently. It was not at all the kind of experience we were looking forward to being new to our area. The place was quite busy. There was no one to greet customers and show them how things work, which would have been more customer-friendly and effective as opposed to just having a sign. I called early in the morning to confirm business hours and pricing. I was quoted $8/ft if you cut your own tree, and $9/ft for the pre-cut ones they just got in from Oregon; plus tax. Our entire family got 3 trees and were charged $9/ft when we should have been charged $8/ft, and didn't realize that until after we paid and got out to our cars. The place was too busy for us to even go back to talk to someone, and we were in general very disappointed and just wanted to get out of there ASAP. To begin with, the farm did not have that many trees to choose from, considering this was only the beginning of the season; the weekend after Thanksgiving. Once you have selected your tree, you have to yell "Saw!" for someone to come and either cut it for you or hand you the saw to cut if you choose to do it yourself. Depending on how busy they are, you might have to wait for a bit. We would have preferred to have our own saw and being able to wander off to cut one ourselves and bring it up to pay; the way we've done it at another farm we've been going to the last several years. You're also not allowed to take any trimmings or excess branches they have on the ground (I'd always get these to make swags and porch decorations at another farm). This is because they use them to make their own wreaths and to sell for something like $20 or $25 here. The employees weren't so nice in responding either when you ask a simple question. They have strings for you to tie your tree to the car, but seemed to keep a close eye on how much you take, and ask how many trees you actually bought ("you just got the one tree?" Well, geez, gosh, why would one want to take more than they actually need of that stuff anyways? Sorry we wanted to reasonably secure the tree for the drive home, and didn't feel a couple of flimsy strings will do. It really just wasn't a comfortable or pleasant experience at all for us. Definitely no holiday spirit exuded here. We won't be back. read more

(Accidentally posted this as a "tip" before) Love this place! It is sooo pretty and everyone is super nice. They have a nice outside fire to sit around and drink hot coco, and the best oranges I've ever had. Yes, you have to pay for the whole tree and yes, They charge for twine its like two bucks, suck it up and quit whining. There are several kinds of beautiful trees growing there to choose from plus they bring down the noble firs from their farm in oregon so they have those as well. A lot of our family came and got trees today. We had a wonderful time and the trees are so much less expensive than what we were used too paying. The cost is $8.00 per foot and the owner Bob Hane always goes in your favor by reducing the height by half a foot. read more

We found this place on yelp after a farm that had been recommended to us was closed on a Sunday. I just recently moved out here from Utah, and this place felt like a new family Christmas tradition. They have a beautiful farm with a little stream running through, and really felt like we were getting out of the city without going too far. I initially thought the price was very high... I had expected to pay a little more for the experience, but it felt like a lot! After running errands today and seeing the prices at Home Depot and Walmart, I actually felt like we got a good deal, and I got to wear a plaid shirt and feel like a sexy lumberjack for the day...so that's priceless! read more

Beautiful property. Tree selection to cut down yourself is limited after thanksgiving weekend but they ship in precut trees which are nice (noble firs). It's $8/ft. The property has a creek, a pond and a little shop. The disappointing thing is the older gentleman working there was quite grumpy. He scolded our children and accused us of cutting down a tree when we had found it precut on the side. It just really didn't exude Christmas spirit. We usually go to Rapettis in Apple hill (they ran out of trees early this year) and they are always kind to the children and have amazing customer service. read more

This place is the best - - we've been going here for years - no reason to go anywhere else. It's a beautiful location, close to Hwy49. We come from Roseville. The family that runs it are very nice. Their prices are very reasonable - you can get a really nice sized beautiful Grand Fir (my favorite) for about 40bucks. Those type are pre-cut from a different location and they have another style that is choose & cut fresh. There is a smallish gift shop, beautiful garden and pond, a nice wood stove heater and cute dogs hanging about. We live in Auburn and would not think of going any place else. The owners are GREAT and they do NOT nickel and dime you, in fact they are VERY generous in assessing the height of the tree you bring in, after cutting it. REALLY! REALLY! The owner of Pine Valley Ranch charged me $1.75 for the twine to tie the feeble tree I just paid him $52 for. REALLY! I did the best I could to keep from laughing. I thought he was joking. But he put his hand out and took my two dollars. I said "are you serious?" He smiled and said "we charge for everything here except the air you breath" and he handed me a plastic baggy with a few feet of twine in it. If you doubt this review, call and ask if they charge for twine! I told him I was afraid to ask how much he charged for netting to wrap the tree. He just smiled and said, "it's available if you're willing to pay." I don't know what the earlier reviewers mean by not being "nickled and dimed" by the Hanes family at Pine Valley Ranch, but I'm new to the area and where I come from charging $1.75 for a few feet of twine that cost pennies is nickling and diming. No, it's actually obnoxious! I told him to keep the quarter change, he must be in pretty bad shape and can use it better than me. He tried to laugh it off and held the quarter out as if his approach was humorous and acceptable. Mister, there ain't nothing not-rude about charging paying customers 6000 percent markup on twine after they have paid you very well for a tree. For the customers who say they will never go anywhere else but Pine Valley Ranch, you have my pity. I wonder if the Hanes' kids had to pay for their meals while growing up. We just arrived to pine valley. Was here 30 minutes early with my family and wanted to take pictures with my family and get a tree. Instead of just going on the lot, I called the number posted. First I was hung up on, I was in disbelief so I called back. A very rude man answered and informed me that wasn't going to happen. When we asked what day they closed for the season (since there were still 10 more days until Xmas), he got all nasty and yelled that they were closed. Geez!! I suppose it depends on what you're looking for, but for us the trees here were the worst we've ever seen at a tree farm. We are a family of five and none of us saw a single tree that was even a candidate. I don't believe we are overly picky, so I conclude that the people who gave positive reviews must like shapeless, wild trees with missing branches and crooked tops. The people who are complaining about twine on here need to drive to the mall and pick up a tree in their lot there, not that there is anything wrong with that. If you are going to buy a christmas tree make sure to bring your own twine, rope, or straps ... this is just common sense! This place is beautiful and the owners are more than delightful. If you are looking for a great tree experience please avoid this place at all cost. We live in Rocklin and thought we would try a new place this year. The owners need to change there name to nickel and dime you Christmas trees. The long list of rules as soon as you enter really sets the tone. They even have a rule for no rock throwing. I'm sorry, do you really need to tell people they can't throw rocks. Anyway, they charge for everything! We selected a tree and the young man who cut the tree was nice. I told him I did not need one that big and asked for it to be cut about a foot off the ground. He told me they could cut it when I check out. After I carried the tree to the check out the owner stood up the tree and charged charged me based on the top of the tree. When I told him the young man said I could cut off a foot off the bottom he snickered and said, "sorry, you pay for the whole tree here from the dirt on the ground to the tippy top of the tree." I was taken back at his tone and greedy nature. I get that they are a business but I was told one thing and he did not care. In fact, he was down right spiteful in his response. I did not want to make a scene so I paid the extra 5 bucks and when the owners wife checked me out she asked how everything was. I told her I was not happy but willing to pay what the man said and she had no response. Also, if you want twine that will cost you and tree net will cost as well. I had hoped for a great experience from a owner operated farm, but all I got was hostility, lies, and charged for everything. If you are in the mood for a real life grinch then by all means go to pine valley ranch. However, if you want to have a nice time cutting down your own tree go anywhere else. John C. read more
