Based on the receipt he itemized (with no procedure codes btw) just prices, a total of $2900 for a root canal + crown. I was responsible for $2400 out of pocket, " my insurance to cover $290" Once I got home, I for whatever reason felt really uneasy of the $1400 i just forked over even with insurance and it being the 3rd day of the new year. I began feeling like something didn't add up. So I decided I would Call my insurance the next morning, to verify my coverage and question why I had to pay so much out of pocket, and to also verify that Dr Bahrami didn't just scam me. Once I got in contact with My insurance company the next morning, the rep confirmed that Dr. Bahrami was NOT apart of my network and nothing would be covered from my treatment. My insurance asked for the dentist office number and called the office to verify and a representative at the dentist disclosed that they accept Premier patients but not HMO coverage. Contacted the dentist office, and a young lady stated that they weren't notified that I had insurance, and it must have been a misunderstanding, but I could come back and they would reverse the charge. When I went back to the office to speak to Dr. Bahrami, he stated they had no idea what I was talking about and nobody in his office ever said that they would refund my money. Dr. Bahrami then stated that when I was there yesterday, he never said they accepted my insurance, they only said they are a provider, and that I would have to pay more out of pocket because I have private pay. He then said, so as a courtesy , their practice is to give $145 credit to patients that are covered by insurance that they do not accept. HOW DOES THAT EVEN MAKE SENSE???? DOESN'T THAT MEAN THEY DON'T ACCEPT MY INSURANCE? Why would you itemize on an estimate that $290 would be covered by my insurance if they really don't ? Why would you present everything to me as if my insurance does cover a portion when in actuality they aren't covering anything? SCAM SCAM SCAM !!! Back looking at the detailed receipt, it looks like what they did was, charge me double the price for everything, then disguised a 10% discount on the total procedure and itemized it at "covered by insurance", so essentially I was treated as a cash patient and mislead into believing this was covered partially by insurance. At no point did they disclose that they did not accept HMO, they merely stated that my insurance covered a small portion. They deceivingly put on the receipt that my insurance would cover $290, which makes no sense whatsoever. They saw me first thing the next morning to glue it back on. I can hardly believe I used to have a lot of fear about going to the dentist. At one point I needed to take Valium to go through with it. (I think two experiences contributed to that--when I was in HS, a dentist hit my nerve with his drill and I saw "Marathon Man," the classic thriller with Dustin Hoffman, which features a torture scene with a dentist and dental tools.
