What I specifically liked about De Bijenkorf was the lacking pressure from sales staff as one might get elsewhere. You are left to peruse and shop at your own pace. When you are ready for help, the staff is very attentive and helpful. I also liked that they had a "tax free lounge" for out of country shoppers like myself. I could also choose which currency I wanted to pay in at the point of purchase- my home currency or euro. I bought a pair of Louboutin shoes that are unavailable in my home country for less than they would've cost back home. They had homeware from my favorite designers, cosmetics, accessories for days, wide clothing variety for men, women and children. Anything you could need or want. Plenty edible goods on the top floor to buy as gifts for those back home. I left with adorable chocolate for the kids in my life as well as decadent treats for friends. De Bijenkorf is truly a luxury department store.

I had walked by this shop so many times and ironically, on my first trip to Amsterdam I stayed two doors down from it and never noticed it. I mentioned this to the owner and he said, which I agree, that part of the charm of Amsterdam is there are so many things here that you are constantly stumbling upon amazing shops and more every time you walk down the street. He couldn't be more right. The shop itself is so unique. I knew immediately that I would love it here. The items were cool and not like anything else I'd find while shopping. It's definitely not a tourist shop; it's not a t-shirt or postcard sort of place, but it features really cool home decor items from suspended butterflies to really cool metal displays. I knew immediately I'd find so many things I'd love and couldn't bring back to the states with me because I'd have no room and I was right, but I did find some cool metal keys to bring with me to decorate in my living room. I asked the owner if they had a story to them and he replied, "everything has a story" and that was good enough for me.

The displays are carefully curated so you should look carefully to appreciate everything!

The range is genuinely impressive -- inexpensive impulse buys, mid‑range souvenirs, and higher‑end pieces all mixed together without feeling chaotic. It's the kind of place where you can walk in with no plan and still find something that feels right. The storefront windows are especially eye‑catching, packed with items arranged almost like a curated gallery. Many of those pieces aren't actually out on the shelves, so if something in the window catches your eye, you'll need an employee to pull it out or give you pricing. It's worth asking, because the window selection includes some of the more unique items they carry. The store itself is a decent size, but it fills up quickly. Tourists with backpacks tend to crowd the aisles, and navigating around them can be a bit of a challenge during busier hours. It's not unbearable, just something to be aware of if you prefer a little breathing room while browsing. Inside, the shop is colorful, tightly arranged, and fun to explore. There's a good balance between Amsterdam‑themed souvenirs and quirky, humorous gifts that don't feel like the usual tourist fare. Staff are friendly and quick to help, especially when you're trying to track down something from the windows or looking for recommendations. Overall, it's a charming stop with a wide variety of items and a more curated feel than most gift shops in the area. Easy to enjoy, and easy to find something to take home.

For context, River Island clothing stores don't exist in the US, but I find myself shopping online using their app often. Before my trip, I purchased a pair of jeans that didn't fit (can someone explain how a US size 2-4 translates to a UK size 10?!) and realized I couldn't return them from the US. Instead, I tracked down a River Island store near Dam Square and set out on a quest to get my $50 back lol. So, back to the review... I stopped by just in time since the store is actually closing down this month. Almost everything was on sale, from swimwear to formalwear. I got a gorgeous summer dress for 10€ (originally €65) and a cute pair of corduroy pants for 10€ (originally €40). I was also able to process my international return with the lovely cashiers who were VERY patient as they processed a return for merchandise sold to me in GBP, charged to my card in USD, with a mandatory return to my card of EUR. Say that 3 times fast. Enough to confuse anyone, but they made it happen without any complaints (and we had a good laugh about it afterwards). If you're roaming around Dam Square and need some retail therapy, visit River Island before they close!
