Man, as an American I really love Hema. Not being native to this store, I don't know if the locals love it as much as I do, but when I'm in Amsterdam I make multiple stops here. Hema, to Americans would be a mix of IKEA, Marshalls, a bodega, and a small Target. Hema seemingly has it all: beauty supplies, grocery items, clothing, toys, luggage, home decor, and more. The location has an ATM for you foreign travelers like me who need Euros but don't want to be scammed by an ATM- they don't charge an extra fee at this ATM. The store is neat and organized. The clothing is rather plain in its design which I like. The beauty products I have always loved and I love getting their tablets (paper) and pens. Everything is unique and reasonably priced. I can find so many things here to pack into my suitcase and bring home. It's also a great place to swing by should you forgot to pack something essential. At least buying it here will save you some Euro. It's definitely a must for me when I'm in Amsterdam, it might not be for you as it's really a very simple store, but it's a life-saver should you need it.

After a fantastic whipped cream ice cream cone at Banketbakkerij van der Linde on our last visit to Amsterdam, my bf and I went back to get some more on our second trip... but alas, we got there too late, and the shop was already closed. :( So what's a girl to do when she's craving creamy ice cream? Save the cravings for another day (we did go back the next day when it was open ;))... or... turn around and spy a giant sign across the street at Hema advertising a soft serve cone for only 0.50 euro! :) So we walked in and were pleasantly surprised at how handy this store was. Plenty of fresh foods in the refrigerated section, plenty of packaged foods in the aisles, and a long serving counter serving up ice cream and assorted hot snacks. Bonus: there were plenty of seats so we could rest our weary feet and sit down to enjoy our soft serve. :) How come I never knew about this place before? Would have been perfect for us to get fixin's here to pack a picnic for the park. The ice cream was actually quite yummy and hit the spot. We also picked up some cool drinks and fresh fruit (bananas and green apples) to munch on later.

If you are in a rush and want some fast food there is a small food court upstairs. I grabbed a chicken sandwich and pain au chocolat. Reasonably priced fast food. Enjoy your food and get your shopping on!

Love this place! It's a pseudo IKEA but with housewares, clothes and personal item. This store has cosmetics...a little bit of everything. The prices are excellent! This location is just off of Dam Square in one of the many ride streets. I spent a whopping €5 and got a nail polish, 3 sleeves of cotton balls and something else I cannot remember lol The customer service was excellent. By the way, I ate an excellent hot dog and drink combo for €3.

So glad I found this place. It's kind of like a Target. No further explanation needed. LOL.

I swear, it's just a huge department type store, but again, there's just something about the newness of it to me that made it so great. For those of you from the states, to me, it reminded me a bit of a mix between a Target and a major department store. A bit of everything at affordable prices. We stopped in here a few times for a few things we needed on our trip and even once for a snack. I am a huge lover of smoked meats and cheese, so when we saw that we could get their famous smoked sausage on a roll for £2 and an ice cream sundae for £1 we were all about it and quite happy for it. One thing I miss living in the UK are smoked meats and sausages. Proper smoked meats and sausages. This really hit the spot. I was really tempted to buy stuff to bring back for my home in Glasgow, but figured it would be a pain to drag everything back when I could just get stuff once I got home if I wanted. Instead, I bought a really cool green ink pen for uni, some stroop waffles for the boyfriend and some candles for a birthday we were celebrating while in Amsterdam! Definitly a fan of Hema and will shop here again if ever given the chance!

**This review is about the washrooms in the shopping center.**…read more We were out and about when nature called. There weren't any public washrooms, excluding those outdoor urinals ("pee curls") that only men can really use, and an employee of a nearby shop directed us to the Magna Plaza shopping center. There were washrooms on the second floor of the shopping center, but it cost €1. But when you have to go, you have to go, and I figured since they were charging to use the facilities, it would at least be a clean and comfortable experience -- when you pay for something, there are certain expectations. To get to the entrance of the washrooms, there were two turnstiles. I went to one turnstile, but it was cash only and I didn't have any cash on me, so I went to the second turnstile that accepted credit cards. However, there was a group of fucking tourists, paying by cash, blocking the credit card only turnstile, while they took their sweet time trying to figure out the currency. I finally managed to get into the washroom, and there was no toilet paper! Seriously, if I have to PAY to use the toilet, there better damn well be toilet paper! Thank goodness I always carry napkins and tissues with me and I wasn't taking a shit! I then went to wash my hands, but there was a MALE employee in the WOMEN'S washroom, and he was blocking the sinks and wouldn't let me wash my hands! I was able to find the handicapped washroom and wash my hands in there, but there was no paper towel. This one of the worst public bathroom experiences I have had (that did not include bodily fluids or excrement everywhere). If I have to pay, I expect the basics such as toilet paper, paper towel (or at least a hand dryer), and the ability to wash my hands! [Yelp collections: Europe 2024; Amsterdam, the Netherlands]
