Man, as an American I really love Hema. Not being native to this store, I don't know if the locals love it as much as I do, but when I'm in Amsterdam I make multiple stops here. Hema, to Americans would be a mix of IKEA, Marshalls, a bodega, and a small Target. Hema seemingly has it all: beauty supplies, grocery items, clothing, toys, luggage, home decor, and more. The location has an ATM for you foreign travelers like me who need Euros but don't want to be scammed by an ATM- they don't charge an extra fee at this ATM. The store is neat and organized. The clothing is rather plain in its design which I like. The beauty products I have always loved and I love getting their tablets (paper) and pens. Everything is unique and reasonably priced. I can find so many things here to pack into my suitcase and bring home. It's also a great place to swing by should you forgot to pack something essential. At least buying it here will save you some Euro. It's definitely a must for me when I'm in Amsterdam, it might not be for you as it's really a very simple store, but it's a life-saver should you need it.

yummy soft serve ice cream!

After a fantastic whipped cream ice cream cone at Banketbakkerij van der Linde on our last visit to Amsterdam, my bf and I went back to get some more on our second trip... but alas, we got there too late, and the shop was already closed. :( So what's a girl to do when she's craving creamy ice cream? Save the cravings for another day (we did go back the next day when it was open ;))... or... turn around and spy a giant sign across the street at Hema advertising a soft serve cone for only 0.50 euro! :) So we walked in and were pleasantly surprised at how handy this store was. Plenty of fresh foods in the refrigerated section, plenty of packaged foods in the aisles, and a long serving counter serving up ice cream and assorted hot snacks. Bonus: there were plenty of seats so we could rest our weary feet and sit down to enjoy our soft serve. :) How come I never knew about this place before? Would have been perfect for us to get fixin's here to pack a picnic for the park. The ice cream was actually quite yummy and hit the spot. We also picked up some cool drinks and fresh fruit (bananas and green apples) to munch on later.

If you are in a rush and want some fast food there is a small food court upstairs. I grabbed a chicken sandwich and pain au chocolat. Reasonably priced fast food. Enjoy your food and get your shopping on!

Love this place! It's a pseudo IKEA but with housewares, clothes and personal item. This store has cosmetics...a little bit of everything. The prices are excellent! This location is just off of Dam Square in one of the many ride streets. I spent a whopping €5 and got a nail polish, 3 sleeves of cotton balls and something else I cannot remember lol The customer service was excellent. By the way, I ate an excellent hot dog and drink combo for €3.

So glad I found this place. It's kind of like a Target. No further explanation needed. LOL.

It's like a Target in Europe! Some neat things that are different from America, they also have a great food court area!

Downstairs, you can stock up on all the shampoo and toothpaste that airport security wouldn't allow you to put in your carry-on.

So i was on the search for Out of the Closet which I heard was awesome, and instead I found out it…read morewas replaced by this store which I must say I did not love. First off the "vintage" things they have are overpriced, and their Paris section looks like nothing more then some cut off jean shorts and gym shorts with strange prints on them. Does that make it okay to charge 20 euros and up per item in this section? For kilo shop it does. The rest of their stuff is mainly old shoes, belts, dresses, tops, and jeans. Most of which are from expats (think abercrombie/aeropostale/hollister) or seriously stuff so ugly not even your great grandma would be caught dead in it. If you are looking for some second hand cheerleading outfits however, you have come to the right place because for some reason they have a large selection of these things. To me I was glad I got to see this store and whatnot, but they stuff I tried on all fit weird so I ended up leaving empty handed. Also the area it is in is nice, but on Fridays and weekends it becomes crowded with tourists inside the store as well as the streets right out the store and this is annoying when trying to shop in the store.

Super cool shop for Vintage lovers. The only drawback about this store, it has a heavy Vintage odor,…read morewhich made me a little apprehensive to walk in. Kilo-shop is a new Vintage shop on Waterlooplein, basically in the same location as Out of the Closet. Unfortunately Out of the Closet closed and was quickly replaced with Kilo-shop. I am sure if Out of the closet concept was similar to Kilo-shop, then they would have lasted longer. Shopping in here I guess is like shopping at the market. They weigh your clothes on the scale and that determines the final cost. It's an interesting concept, ideal for vintage lovers, students, or hipsters. Kilo Shop is originally from Paris, so whether your in Amsterdam or Paris stop in and have fun browsing through tons of second hand clothes.
