Doctor #1: Refused to send me to Physical Therapy- said wouldn't help at all, in fact make the situation worse. Instead recommended a $600 out of pocket treatment that did zero to help. Saw another doctor at another clinic that did end up sending me to PT. PT gave me back my mobility and decreased pain. Doctor # 2: Given outdated and unnecessary paperwork to complete (according to my insurance and the UW customer service)- haven't these people bothered to check in the last 4 years what papers are in patient care packets? Called in for a serious reaction after surgery- could be blood clots they said. Then said would set up appointment for procedure to check on possible clots (their words, "possible blood clots")....still waiting....sent email asking about appointment...still waiting on response. Guess I'll be going to the ER to get this checked on then? Why put the idea of blood clots in my mind and then drop the follow-up to get me seen for this life threatening condition? Customer representatives when you call into the clinic are rude, curt and useless. When I have been in the waiting room, have heard them taking about patients, mocking them and making fun. Shame on you making fun of sick people in pain.

Bad news, I needed surgery, but good news, Dr. McInnes and his nurse, Dee, are super nice, as is everybody else I have interacted with at the clinic (another nurse, Angie, and all the receptionists). Dr. McInnes and Dee have both taken the time to answer all my questions, and the doctor went out of his way to explain things to me after surgery *and* in my next appointment--just in case I had missed anything in my post-surgery stupor. He drew pictures, and even showed me some photos he took of my little bone fragments with his iPhone (not kidding). He's done a great job of explaining everything to me very clearly, making sure I understood, and making sure I was as comfortable as possible with everything. (For example, I have a pin in my toe that will be removed later, and he modified the dressing a little bit so the pin would be covered because I was nervous about having the end exposed. He also gave me a new prescription for pain meds the first time I saw him, because the Vicodin the ER gave me was giving me a lot of nausea.) On the down side, you have to pay for parking, but again on the plus side, when I left today, the parking lady gave me a jar of blackberry jam! What!!! That's not even possible. BUT IT IS, and I have the jam to prove it.

Also consulted with Dr. Shafer and am very pleased with his approach to my back issues and making sure that my care path for the pain I was experiencing was fully understood. All the rest... needs work. My major complaints: 1: impossible to get my scheduler on the phone. Left voicemail after voicemail trying to get in touch, only after digging through old papers was I able to find a direct number that got me on the phone. The attitude of the people answering the phone is poor and caused unnecessary stress pre-operation. The scheduler was helpful once getting in contact, but it should not have been that difficult. 2: called 3 times (yes, 3) before my surgery to make sure they had tall crutches for me. I am a person of exceptional height and i made sure to call ahead of time to verify that crutches for me would be available and was blown off as if it was a stupid question. On the day of my surgery, they came in and said that they didnt have tall enough crutches for me. Had to buy some online and went home with a walker that's too small and now have to haggle with insurance to get my crutches. They were rude to my caretaker when they attempted to ask about the crutch situation as well. In general, the support staff acts like doing their job is an inconvenience. If you value a fully supportive care experience, it could be hit or miss here. I am extremely happy with my choice to work with Dr. Downer, but I have learned that his expertise comes at the price of flaky support staff.

This was exactly what had happened the first time with this provider but I had forgotten about it. Stereotypical surgeon bedside manner, shook hands and then it was a whirlwind and over. I could see him stiffening when I started to ask a question. Probably because the outcomes of the procedure were not as expected? There was zero compassion. You just know when you don't want to go back to a provider because of their demeanor and this was one of those encounters. The front desk and MA were definitely more personable and interactive. And I agree, the one scheduler who answers the phone is likely overworked, but boy she was a ding-dong and rude to boot. The confirmation text message was for the wrong clinic! When I called back to check she was indifferent and unapologetic: well, 'our message system is wonky' sometimes! What?! I could have gone to the wrong clinic and missed my appointment altogether. Who hires and trains these people?? And...I am a medical provider myself, don't expect special treatment, but I like to be treated the way I treat my patients which is not in this manner. Humility should be the bedrock of the bedside approach, but providers like these give all docs a bad name. I apologize on behalf of this provider to patients and caregivers who have been been at the receiving end of such impersonal and condescending interactions with a doc.

I initially sought help from another sports medicine doctor who ordered an MRI but ultimately told me the pain was "in my head" and that I just needed to deal with it. That experience left me feeling discouraged and hopeless. Thankfully, I was later referred to Dr. Grant Garcia, and my experience with him was completely different. During my first visit, Dr. Garcia reviewed the same MRI and immediately identified the issue: significant cartilage damage that the previous doctor had missed. It turned out I had damaged and was missing all the cartilage between my femur and patella. Dr. Garcia walked me through my options with compassion and clarity, and together we decided on MACI--a procedure where they take my own cartilage, grow it in a lab, and use it to repair the damaged area. I had the surgery a year ago, and it has truly changed my life. The pain is completely gone, and I'm able to run again! Dr. Garcia gave me hope when I needed it most. His expertise, attention to detail, and care for his patients set him apart. I can't recommend him highly enough to anyone suffering from knee pain or sports injuries.
