This is a great pub to stop in if you come to visit Tintern. Apparently, Somerset Maugham visited…read morehere once and they decided to change the name of the place to honor one of his books. That's how you know you've arrived as an author. There is a wonderful, ancient atmosphere in this low-ceilinged building. I only had time for a quick pint, but there were several people enjoying Sunday dinners, and I would like to have tried one myself. This place has the most dangerous entrance/exit I have ever seen on it. Once you're out the door and down the steps, you're pretty much standing in the road just beyond a blind curve. I don't know how the drunks avoid getting run over. Anyway, I'd recommend this place over the pubs that are closer to the abbey.

We dropped into the Moon&6d during a brief stay in Tintern. It has a superb location overlooking…read morethe pretty meanders of the Wye. I tried 2 cask ales (butty bach, obviously and a local kingstone beer) both tasted great. but i look forward to returning to try their menu next time. The interior decor is traditional and cosy, with seperate sections. It has a decent sized balcony which is a great spot to see this stunning open valley, or some pretty riverside benches. i could have stayed for hours, the staff were on the ball and efficient and i had a chat with new manager who seems to have the passion to really make something of the food side as well as the drinks,he is a product of B'hams excellent UCB so i have faith. a great stop off point midjourney or equally a casual destination for dinner with a cracking view.

We decided to have a day out in Chepstow yesterday 31/10/2010…read more Had a great time looking around the Castle as we have not visited for around 20 years. Graet to see that dogs are allowed on a lead. After Castle had a wonder around the town to find some inspiration re lunch. As it was a dampish late Autumn day we were not keen to sit outside with the dog and as none of the Restaurants Pubs or Cafes ( of which there are a great many) gave us any indication that dogs were allowed inside Shame on you, no wonder pubs are closing at the rate of around 40 a week - we wondered back down towards the Castle and river area to check out the pubs to see if we could find a sandwich to takeaway. As we passed the Afon Gwy I noticed a sign outside which said dogs welcome in the Bar and gardens. Problem solved. We walked into the bar and were made to feel most welcome and were shown to a table. As it was Sunday lunch the menu was limited to roasts for carnivores so my Husband was happy and I as a vege had a choice of two dishes, Roast Veg Quiche and something with Brie and beetroot. When the food arrived it was beautifully presented and in my case the quiche was placed in the centre of a square plate on top of lettuce with plenty of good fresh salad around it plus four new potatos and roast parsnips. The Waitress then returned with two huge serving dishes of veg. Much more as would be usual for two to share. All cooked to perfection and piping hot. As we are a greedy pair we polished all this off and had Chocolate Fondants with custard for pud and a pot of peppermint tea for two. Total cost? Just over £30. The atmostphere in the bar was very good and the food excellent. When we got home I "Googled" the Afon Gwy and was amazed at the very negative comments about the place. Fair enough we only ate there and didn't stay overnight but we were very pleased with our experience of real food served in a pleasant atmostphere by very helpful staff and not the pretentious "Masterchef" type rubbish that passes for food in some establishments.
