    Biltmore Dermatology - Undisclosed costs

[ATTN: Biltmore Derm--I'm not paying another cent. I'm filing a complaint with the Indiana AG…read moreConsumer Protection Division over your deceptive practices and violations. STOP SENDING BILLS]   My dealings with this "Truck Stop Derm" has been a complete nightmare. I specifically requested an appointment with a dermatologist, but no one corrected me--I was seen by an NP for less than 5 minutes with no disclosure of any supervising physician, despite Indiana law requiring collaborative agreements and transparency.    I was cash-pay and asked for an estimate upfront--denied. The bizarre "insurance fee + treatment cost" model was never explained, leading to gross overcharging: $207.34 for an ineffective intralesional steroid injection that did NOTHING.   Most alarmingly, after the NP's brief exam, she left, and an unnamed person that was in street clothes performed the entire injection alone--no supervision, no introduction, no consent. Apparently this was a medical assistant? They have people treating patients alone that have only obtained a certificate. This violates Indiana scope-of-practice and informed-consent rules for invasive procedures. I'm not surprised the treatment failed completely.   Compare this to a board-certified NYC dermatologist charging $150 for the same shot done personally, this NP-led clinic in Vincennes is outrageously priced, unprofessional, and unethical. Zero accountability.     I emailed and sent a certified detailed complaint--NO RESPONSE. Yet they keep sending bills, doubling with interest! Avoid this place--save your time, money, and dignity.

When I asked the nurse if it was a prescription, she told me yes. I later found out it is not a prescription at all -- it's a cosmetic product they sell in-office (and similar to what I already use over-the-counter). When I tried to return it unopened just 20 minutes later, they refused. I feel misled and frustrated, especially since I trusted them for medical treatment, not product sales.

READ BEFORE USING THIS "BUSINESS" I would literally NEVER…read morerecommend this "business" to ANYONE. PHOTOS INCLUDED I walked in today, was given forms after being asked about insurance, rushed into a room with no time to fill out the paperwork. I was asked if I had insurance multiple times. Doctor came in and didn't acknowledge us (gf was with me) and told me to sign the paperwork even though he knew i hadn't read it yet. He immediately complained to me that this paperwork shouldve been done already. I had only had this paperwork for 10 minutes while simultaneously having to answer many questions from the nurse. I honesty felt like he made a lot of "sideways" remarks. I felt rushed throughout the whole process. Not talking in a way that resembled a medical professional doing. He asked me about my axillary. When i was obviously confused, he repeated axillary again. When i was still obviously confused, he rudely replied armpit. My gf was in the room, after my appointment she admitted to me that after her years of medical classes, literally having to memorize the whole body multiple times, she was still confused by him acting this way. Why would an experienced medical proffesional talk to a patient this way? "I dont know about your insurance, but you obviously have some things going on." He said this after he already knew i didnt have insurance. My girlfriend's main concern comes in with the medical paperwork. When we left we were given only one paper. It was the receipt for the "service" the business owner who was the doctor "provided." We went home and she said that we needed my medical paperwork and pointed out it was VERY weird that i was provided with no paperwork about my condition especially considering that it was a condition neither of us had heard about nor about the medication that was prescribed. We went back for my medical paperwork and they were kind of weird about it. Repeated several times that they werent sure if they could print it and that he hadnt signed it yet. In return, i kept repeating that i just wanted my information and they eventually let me have it. My gf's top concern is that many things in the paperwork that werent talked about and she only feels relieved we basically demanded to have it because we use many things that the paperwork says makes my condition worse. I cant think of anything else to say at the moment, but if you HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE but to go here, be prepared, stay safe, know your rights and do your own research. (Couldn't add the photos and it wouldn't let me delete photos included for some reason...)

They advertise a lot of cosmetic procedures so that seems to be their focus over medical dermatology. We went there for one main reason: they were able to get my teenager in the very next day for an evening appointment. I had called another dermatology group (Dawes Fretzin) and they had a 2 month wait for an initial visit. There were a couple of problems with this visit but the main one I think about now is that the PA should have done a visual exam of his skin but he didn't even have my son take off his shirt to see if there were any skin problems overall. They didn't really ask about family history either and both grandfather and uncle had basal cell carcinoma, a non-melanoma cancer spot on my nose ( common type) which were both surgically removed eventually. My teenager is probably ok because he gets tan so easily every summer but that doesn't excuse that lack of due diligence or excellent care. The visit with the PA was personable and he seemed to know acne care. He and the nurse were very friendly and helpful. He prescribed 3 things and placed the order for those online. There was a program or service I'd never heard of. I did have to register for the final mail delivery service but the best part was that these were at no extra charge since insurance covered it. They seemed to do this a lot. Within 5 to 7 days we got a box delivered to the door. That was nice. We arrived a little early for the appointment and were not told that the PA would not be on time. (Their chalk board said they were on time.) After 15 or 20 minutes of waiting I asked about it and it wasn't much longer before they got us back to the exam room. For our purposes for this issue this practice was fine. For acne and other aesthetic procedures I'd probably recommend. But for any other skin concerns I will make sure to see an MD or go to another one.

Although I was given subpar treatment (it's extremely hard to find a dermatologist that doesn't have a six month wait. I'm not sure if this is just the Indianapolis area or not), I persisted because I knew acne treatment was a long process that took time. When I arrived today at 3:25 p.m. for a 3:20 p.m. appointment an elderly couple was in front of me and the receptionist was trying to get them taken care of as fast as possible. When I finally had my turn with another receptionist next to her, it was probably 3:30p. Check-in went smoothly. I sat down to wait, and another elderly white woman walks in. At which point, she is also checked in smoothly. She was early for a 4:15 p.m. appointment with Dr. Machado. Less than two minutes later, she is being escorted back. I hear one of the receptionists say to another receptionist that I had been waiting and my appointment had been at 3:20 p.m. Then (of course) whispering ensued, and about 5 minutes later I was called back. The nurse who took me back was frank when I asked "why did the other woman go before me?" I expected her to say something along the lines of "it was urgent," or something of the sort -- something completely understandable. But, no. She said "you were late." I said, "So, someone who had an appointment about 50 minutes after mine was able to be seen because of something out of my control, when there is a ten minute leeway, and I was only five minutes late?" In her frankness, the nurse says "yup." I think they could sense how upset I was, so Dr. Machado magically appeared about five minutes later -- with a different nurse. In the meantime, Dr. Machado ensues in the most hurried and disrespectful appointments I have yet to have with her (and each of the four I have had with her are about the same). I correct her on the pronunciation of my name every time, I have to tell her I'm in a same-sex relationship, so I don't need contraceptive, every time, I have to tell her what face wash I am using every time (what are they scribbling if not these small facts?), and, the worst of all I have to tell her what problem areas I do and do not have EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. This is the last time I will be coming here. Because although it's a long wait for other dermatologists in the area, clearly they are worth every bit of dignity they are probably giving to their patients. Oh, and shout to the receptionist who noticed I was being treated unfairly and tried to speak up. - SHAKKIRA Harris
