I went, using a Groupon, during the 3rd week of February. The pros- very cute store, tons of things to paint, we had a lot of fun painting our items. The cons- unprofessional staff ran by high schoolers. When my friend and I arrived two hours before the shop closed, we were told we should come back another day because we wouldn't have time to paint. ?? We're in our early 30s....we were making coffee mugs....this seemed really weird. The another woman came in 45 minutes before closing time with two kids. Another high school employee said she needed to leave and come back another day. The woman was upset, her kids were upset. They even promised to be out by 8pm if that was necessary, the employee said that didn't matter....they couldn't paint at all. Most confusing was that a 3rd employee appeared to be there doing her homework at a different table. This could have just been a friend, but it didn't help with the image that 3 people were there working at the shop and asking everyone to leave. It seemed the staff wanted to turn everyone away. There was a group of Girl Scouts there that night as well, but they seemed completely unable to handle more than 10 people in the shop. Now, on the website the store says it's open till 8. I would assume that means you can come in before 8 and paint until 8:30 or so (like a restaurant if you're wanting food....if it's open till 10 you can come in at 9:30 and eat until 11:00). But they wanted everyone out of the shop at 7:45....I was told this directly by a high school helper. So that made the experience a little blah. But what makes it worse is that it's now almost a month later and I haven't received a call that my item is ready. I called several days ago asking if it's ready (I'm assuming it is, since they said it would take 5-7 days) and haven't received a response to my call. And I paid around $50 plus my $20 Groupon.....not how I'd run the business if it were mine.

Malcom Potek, the owner, really knows his craft. He has been a flameworker for years and now focuses mostly on fusing and stained glass. He gave me a tour of the shop, which is filled with every type of glass and tool you could want. We even discovered we had friends in common. This place is a true find, and I highly recommend Potek Glass if you are interested in any kind of glass hobby. I only wish I lived closer.

I've come here multiple times and have left with quite a few pieces now especially from DC Ice and AMF. Artists art friendly and are happy to chat or give you space, accommodating your desired experience. The shop feels breezy-- large windows on a corner lot lends a lot of natural lighting and the aisles are wide for ease of shopping. They carry plenty of cotton prints, but I noticed they also have a good selection of minky fabric in many colors. They also have batting, pattern guides, and cutting mats/blocks. Pricing was standard for an independent quilt shop at around $13-15 per yard for cotton and $25 for minky. I was greeted in a friendly manner by an employee when I entered who said to let them know if I needed assistance. They also helped me checkout ahead of someone else who needed the cut counter (I did not). I can see myself stopping in if I'm ever back in the area. :)

This year I bought some notepads for $1 each. I think the lined list pads were $2 or 3. Ten packs of cards were $4. Plus they have random freebies like envelopes or other miscellaneous paper goods. This fun sale usually takes place the first Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday in November. If you drive by and see the signs on highway 55 you know they're open to the public. You can also find the details on their Facebook page. I really like the various artists drawings of nature...birds, flowers, greenery, pinecones, etc. They even have some items with Bible verses. They have a few holiday and Hanukkah cards too! Definitely check it out if you're in the area in the fall. Otherwise you'll have to check their website to see what specialty stores they sell in the rest of the year. It's cute stuff!
