I had the most AMAZING experience with Hien for my wedding. Along with Metzli (hairstylist) and their assistants, They were able to get my 8 bridesmaids, mother and MIL and myself all done before the estimated time. They were super efficient and they made it so fun and easy in the morning. The makeup itself was really light and didn't feel cake-y at all. I'm really glad I had the makeup trial with Hien and hair with Metzli beforehand too. I am a zero makeup user day to day so I was looking for something minimal while still having it stand out enough for people to know I am the bride. Communication through email and text only- Hien was very responsive so there were no issues or miscommunications. I would definitely recommend Hien if you're looking for someone who's not heavy handed with their makeup looks! Unless that's something you're going for, she can pull that off too! read more

I reached out to Hien in May 2021 to do makeup and hair for both my wedding trial/engagement photo shoot in June 2021 and wedding in January 2022. I sent her an email to inquire about her availability and she responded the next day. Hien only does makeup and she collaborates with another artist to style hair. Hien was the only point of contact and so all questions were directed to her for both hair and makeup. Hien was friendly, professional, and quick to respond to any of my questions throughout the entire process. I scheduled my trial with her on the day of my engagement photo shoot and LOVED how my makeup turned out. She assesses how comfortable you are with makeup and asks what your preferences are so that she can get a sense of what would be most suitable. I really appreciated that she provided suggestions on what to do if I were to cry or if my skin got oily. By the end of the day, my makeup still looked great despite sweating a little from running around on the beach. On the day of the wedding, she came on time at 7AM and set up all of her things very quickly. Hien and Metzli did HMU for my mom, the groom's mom, and myself. They were able to finish hair and makeup for all three of us by 10AM as promised, and everyone was very happy with their look. My mom even said that her makeup looked better compared to when she had her makeup done for my brother's wedding a few years ago. My makeup still looked great even after all the sweating I did from dancing by the end of the night. I would absolutely recommend Hien to anyone looking to get their makeup done for any occasion read more

Hien was amazing. I told her from the start about how face makeup often makes my pores look extra enlarged so I usually avoid it. About a half hour into my trial, she agreed and said that she saw what I meant. I still thought that the trial makeup looked good despite the enlarged pores, and I told her that, but she wasn't satisfied. She offered me another trial where she instead airbrushed most of my face. It looked amazing! So glad I did the trial with her, and so thankful that she's more of a perfectionist than I am! Cannot recommend her enough! read more

I hadn't been in a local formal event in awhile and fast forwarding to 2 years later, Hien was the only Make Up Artist on my mind when my husband's work holiday event was coming up. I literally haven't seen Hien in 2 years at this time in December so instead of showing her photos of inspiration, I gave her free leeway on what she can do to my face aside that I wasn't going for subtle. I wanted contouring, dramatic eyes to go with my contacts, and the kind of look that'll keep my husband of 20 years to stare at me all night! Hahahaha. In her words, "Go big or go home". Exactly!! Enclosed are 2 selfies before heading to my husband's Holiday event taken yesterday, 12-11-2018. You'd think my face was photoshopped. Oh hell no....that is all Hien's magic handiwork canvassed all over my face. Selfies on point! She's that goooood! As I had mentioned awhile back in my original review, Hien's prices are very reasonable when compared to other MUAs in the area. I believe its cash only. My form of communication with her is via text which she responds in a very timely manner. I know she travels to client locations but if you're not in a hurry, she does set up shop at a nearby house in the Kearny Mesa/Linda Vista area which is very central in San Diego. Very close to all the major freeways. If you know how to get to San Diego Mesa College or the very popular "K Sandwiches", then you are very very close! Once again, I highly recommend Hien for any event. I honestly think she made me look fantastic the second time around! read more

Got my makeup done for a family photo shoot and I love it! Makeup lasted all day. Hien is amazing . Can't wait to post up my pictures.

My bridal shower was this past Saturday and I needed my make up done in a pinch. I found Hien from Yelp and gave her a call, I was able to get a last minute appointment and it was a great experience! Her salon (office?) is located in her house with a nice set up bc there's tons of natural light. I got full face and my hair done; prices are definitely reasonable. I was most impressed with her expertise. I showed her maybe 2 pics of how I wanted my make up and hair done and boom she delivered on her first try! I did not have to tell her to fix anything! She is VERY meticulous and gentle (she legit has a light hand). My eyes water a lot so it kind of messed up my under-eye coverage. I went 0 to Bridezilla and Hien remained professional and SUPER calming. We had a pretty positive session going but when my tears (allergies) messed up the setting of the concealer and added more time to our appointment Hien did not freak out - she managed my reaction very well and remained calm and soothing. She totally de-escalated the situation and sent me off with a beautiful face and boho chic hair. THANK YOU HIEN!!! Although she is not my wedding MUA, I would definitely TRUST her to be since she's talented, professional, and reallllllly good at handling a Bridezilla :) I definitely recommend Hien!! read more

Hien's work blew me away. I will definitely be coming back to her for future makeup appointments. I've gotten my makeup professionally done once before and really disliked how it turned out. That was due to a lack of communication of the artists part and on my part. This time was totally different. From the get go, Hien was very professional and responsive. I texted her asking about openings in her schedule. She responded very quickly with her prices and availability. I also asked if I needed to bring anything to the appointment and she said no. So no need to bring your own colors or anything. She did mention that I should get my eyebrows threaded before I came to the appointment. She also suggested getting my hair done AFtER the appointment. I did my hair overnight so I came with it done but I was able to pull it up into a bun on top of my head so she could work her magic. I met Hien at her studio (located in a house) in Linda Vista area. It's a neighborhood so there's street parking. It wasn't hard to find parking right by her house. You walk in and she's got her whole set up in the front room. There's a studio chair and all her gear spread out on a table. There's a deep comfy couch where your partner, or whoever comes with you, can sit/sleep. She asked me how I liked my makeup. I told her I don't usually wear makeup and I definitely don't like the look on well defined strong eyebrows on me. She asked if I liked contouring or strobing or if I wanted to have larger looking eyes. I didn't know what any of those things would look like on me but I wanted to try something new so I asked for a "light" contouring (I have no idea what strong contouring looks like... I was afraid to go all the way with it ). I also figured it wouldn't hurt to look like I have bigger eyes (I'm Asian after all), so I asked for that too. Then I closed my eyes, she threw around some fairy dust (makeup) and an hour and a half later, I was done! Throughout the process, she was very gentle and adjusted my head as needed. I felt comfortable the whole time and we had a nice long chat about a ton of things! At the end of the session, I paid her through Venmo and was on my way! I am so happy with my experience with her and highly recommend her. I plan on using her in the future! read more

Hien is an AMAZING makeup artist and I would recommend her services to all San Diego brides. She is prompt, professional, and responds quickly to texts. She is also a hard worker and smoothed out some issues that came up with her hairstylist, Phoebe. I would not recommend working with Phoebe and hiring a different person to do your hair. The reason that I rated her four stars out of five is because Phoebe changed the hairstyling plans a couple days before my wedding. Phoebe and an assistant were going to do the hairstyles for my mom, officiant, four bridesmaids, and myself. The agreed-upon time period for hair and makeup was about three and a half hours for my party. Phoebe did not want to split the money I paid with an assistant. Due to Phoebe working alone, the time period suggested was to have my bridesmaids show up at 6:30 in the morning and have the entire party finished by 11:30. Phoebe was actually very nice but I spent over a thousand dollars to have a stress-free experience for myself and bridal party. Hien tried her best to make the day go smoothly but this change in plans left a very bad taste in my mouth and it caused unnecessary stress. read more

I had a headshot for my wok's website. The photoshoot was at 8:50 a.m. and Hien was able to accomodate me and start at 6 a.m. She did such a wonderful job, really made me look beautiful without making me look too much made up. It was perfect for a professional headshot. Eddie, the hairstylist, did a really nice job too. I had given her an inspo picture but made the haitstyle look better for my face. They are both very professional and friendly women to work with. I would definitely recommend them to anyone in need of hair and mekeup service. read more

I came across Lightly Brush Makeup on Yelp as I was in a rush looking for a makeup artist. With all the great reviews, I did not hesitate to contact Hien at all. Fortunately enough I was able to set up an appointment with her even though it was kinda last minute. Her prompt response, follow up, confirming detailed of location, price and time before our appointment really made me feel at ease. My experience with Hien was wonderfully pleasant, she is super talented and professional. She's meticulous with her work, she listens and completes your requests in every possible way. Besides her amazing work, she is a fun, down to earth and has this upbeat personality that sure makes you laugh. I will definitely be booking her again if I ever in need of a makeup artist. I highly recommend Lightly Brush Makeup for any special occasions and I guarantee you won't be disappointed. read more

I contacted Hien by email one month before "the day" and fortunately enough, she had the day open. She was very attentive and informative when replying emails. Two days before the wedding she let me know my eyebrows should be threaded before our appointment and confirming the details (location, balance), her follow-up made me feel at ease. When I got to her makeup studio, I asked her if she could change the chair (high chair make me very nervous) she had set up and she did without hesitation, making me feel much more comfortable and definitely appreciated her relax attitude about it. She did my makeup beautifully, and even shared some tips about it. Phoebe did an amazing job with my hair, and she was fast and on point! I am very, very happy that Hien and Phoebe did my makeup & hair for my wedding day. They make such a great team, they are very professional and so easy going, they make you feel like you are among friends. Both, Hien and Phoebe are so kind and nice. Thank you both. read more

Hien did my makeup for my wedding day and it turned out amazing! It was my first time having professional make-up done and she did a trial run first to make sure I liked it. I was coming from Las Vegas and I contacted Hien and she responded quickly we set up an appointment for 7 am because our couples shoot was at 9. My girlfriend (who is now my fiancé the couples shoot turned into a surprise engagement) looked flawless she has green eyes and Hien made them POP. I got hien and her sister to do my hair and makeup for my girlfriend's wedding in San diego. I am based in LA so I went to yelp to look at makeup artists in SD. I did contact a few places which did not work out. Out of all the places that I liked...I chose Hien and her sister to do my hair and makeup. We first communicated by text and she was very easy to deal with. Her price is very reasonable too. When I got there, she was very inviting. I trusted her to make me beautiful. And she did. I am very happy with the outcome. Will definitely contact her again if I have an event in san diego. read more

thank you Hien for making me look great in my engagement photos and on my wedding day!! My makeup lasted the entire night of dancing. She also did make up for my sister and sister in law who both looked beautiful. We were all very happy. Hien was able to arrange Linda to do our hair. Whether it was an updo or hair down, she was able to execute whatever style we wanted perfectly. Hien and Linda were both very flexible with their schedules and made the whole experience stress free. I definitely trusted Hien to make me look beautiful and not too overdone. I do recommend that if you're booking her for your wedding, then let her use the glamorous thick false eyelashes, so worth it! read more

Hien is the first professional makeup artist that I have used. I was recommended by a friend of mine and let me say that I'm glad I went to her!! Background: The most makeup I wear is BB cream by Laneige and CC cream by Arbonne, mascara and eyebrow liner. I'm pretty picky with my makeup products and the amount of makeup being applied to my face. I do not like the feel of heavy and thick make up on. Hien helped me with my makeup along with three other females on my wedding day starting at 4AM! I went to her for a trial and I loved it. Of course, for a wedding, makeup has to be heavy and very detailed for picture purposes. She uses airbrushed and my makeup stayed on for 12 hours plus. (Probably will stay on all night if I didn't wash it off) Her price is also very very very affordable and easy to work with. She used different brands of makeup on us but most of what I could see are high end brands. All in all, I was satisfied with her service due to affordability, professionalism, and convenience. I will try to upload pictures in the future. read more

Hien and her sister did a wonderful job of both my hair and makeup for prom! They both did exactly what I wanted and were super sweet. Hien knows her makeup and how to make you look your best, both for a natural and a more dramatic look that I wanted and it stayed all night! Her sister also did a wonderful job with my hair and knew how to work with my all of my long hair and the curls + bobby pins stayed the whole time (which usually never happens)! Overall super happy I decided to share my night with them :) read more

I love Hien and her work! She makes suggestions as to what colors that would compliment your skin tone. In other words, I didn't feel like I had a caked on mask (like they do at departmental make up stores sometimes). The make up didn't feel heavy and she really made the eyeshadow pop (even with my hooded Asian eyes). She also put fake eyelashes on me (my first time - I liked it!). The way she put the airbrush foundation on made my skin look super smooth and natural. Hien took her time with me and made sure I was happy/satisfied with the way I look. If you wanted something adjusted, she's happy to do it. I would recommend Hien to do your makeup for any special occasion! ;) read more

Hien did an amazing job for my wedding makeup on July 23rd. I contacted her a month before my wedding when I realized I hadn't booked a makeup artist so I was pretty desperate. Luckily she was available! She responded almost immediatley and we set up a phone call that same night. She walked me through the process and gave me pricing and before I knew it, we were booked! She was so easy to communicate with, since it's all done through texts and she's easy to schedule phone calls with. I did not have a makeup trial with her before the wedding day since I live in Texas and wasn't planning on coming back into town until the wedding weekend, but the final product was amazing. Overall pricing was very reasonable, especially compared to other MUAs around San Diego. For Bridal makeup, airbrush and lashes were included in the $100 pricing, which I thought was very doable, which is why I booked her immediatley. Awesome job, very professional and made me look beautiful! read more

I am from out of town. I was a bridesmaid for my best friend's wedding and found Hien last minute. I will admit, I was a bit concerned at first because she rubbed me the wrong way (she is very frank through text). But after meeting her in person, I was very relieved to find that she was actually very friendly, professional and hilarious. Anyways, I now understand it was nothing personal, and that she has a business to run. Hien's pricing is very reasonable for the quality you get. Let me tell you, this woman works magic! Hien is very professional and thorough. She gave me the exact look I wanted and made sure I was happy with my result. I wanted to do a natural look with a bit of glam (light contour and smoky eyes), and she delivered! Hien made me feel more beautiful than I ever did at my own wedding! She was able to enhance my natural features without making me look like a completely different person. I have gotten my makeup professionally done a couple times before, and let me tell you, I didn't know that makeup could make you feel beautiful and confident! It's always just been more of an obligatory thing for special events; and I have never been happy with any of the results because I never really felt like myself or comfortable with any of the makeup I've gotten done before. Mind you, I provide detailed photos and ask for the same style every time. I guess I never truly found a talented makeup artist until I met Hien! If you want the natural makeup look, I highly recommend Hien! She is the best! read more

Hien was awesome!! I didn't know exactly what I wanted, but I gave Hien an idea of what kind of make up I liked, and let her work her magic. Hien made the experience so easy and effortless! She walked me through what she was doing and answered any questions that I had, not to mention she is hilarious! Lol. The end result was more than anything I could have ever asked for. Everything was blended perfectly, and made me feel gorgeous while still feeling light and looking natural! Lashes usually end up coming off of my lids & make my eyes feel really heavy after a while because I have small eyes, but the lashes and glue Hien used for me stayed on the whole night and didn't make my eyes feel heavy at all. I wore the make up to a debutant ball and it held up so well throughout the night; even when I got home and went to take off the make up, it was still holding! To me that speaks volumes about the quality of Hiens make up. I loved everything about my make up, & will go to Hien for any of my future make up needs. Thank you so much Hien!!! (: read more

Hien did such an amazing job on my wedding makeup. I picked her because during our trial run, she really took time to listen to all of my feedback. On the day of my wedding, she arrived promptly on time and was excited to get to work. In total, she did my makeup and for my bridal party of 4. Hien was very efficient, but at the same time she made sure that no one felt rushed. She got all of us glammed up and ready to go even earlier than scheduled. My makeup was full glam and it lasted perfectly throughout the whole time. I had on the makeup from 7 AM until midnight and did not need to touch anything up besides lipstick. So I reached out to Lightly Brushed Makeup because all of the reviews were so positive about the communication and pricing. I didn't think it went that well. We texted and I reached out about pricing for my wedding, and the prices are way more expensive for the bride. And I know it takes more time for a bride but it's a significant amount difference. Then when I asked why, I kind of got a snarky response. "The same goes why is the bride's dress more expensive than bridesmaid's dress". This rubbed me the wrong way and I felt inclined to share my experience. Also, I found another vendor who has way better pricing. So, ladies do your research. read more

I can't thank Hien enough for doing my makeup at such short notice yesterday. I had a wedding reception to attend to in the afternoon and was planning to do my makeup myself. Of course I lost track of time running errands and was on a time crunch. I contacted Hien and she was able to fit me into her busy schedule 30 minutes later after she had just gotten done with her other client. Now that's being flexible! When I arrived, she had her makeup station set and was ready to rock and roll. She was very attentive to what I wanted. She asked me what color dress I was planning to wear, what kind of look I wanted to go for, and what color I would normally go for my eyebrows. The final look was great! I came home with my makeup done and all I had to do was get dress and curl my hair real quick. Best part was my boyfriend said he liked my makeup. He thought I looked beautiful and not overdone. He noted that he liked my cheeks, my eyeliner, and my eyebrows were "on fleek" (haha yes we still use that urbn saying). And we made it to the wedding reception just in time. The makeup lasted all night without any touchups. Thanks Hien! Make sure to book her. read more

I've had my make-up done a lot for various functions but I've never worked with Hien before and am very picky (and I've never been airbrushed). First, what we all want to know... her prices are very fair, and she does an exceptional job (i think she could justifiably charge a lot more but you can tell she does it b/c she loves it). My make-up was literally flawless and it lasted beyond what I expected. Everything is hygienic and she is very professional (without being stuffy). Hien spent a lot of time working with me to discover what I was comfortable with and the look I was trying to achieve. I had a TON of ideas and she expertly translated my [jumbled Pinterest board of] ideas into the perfect look. Also, it's worth mentioning that this was a destination wedding so I was in a foreign climate. She saw me before the wedding day and advised me of when to exfoliate and how often I needed to moisturize. She cared about my skin being in the best condition possible (to get best results during application and for overall health of my skin). My make-up and lashes lasted for more than 24 hours (don't judge! ...it was for a destination wedding and lasted through windy beach ceremony, late night dinner, reception/dancing, after party, passing out, breakfast and dash to airport...epic wedding!!). Also, after all that, I didn't breakout!! I was really worried because I have sensitive skin and did not get to wash my face until I got back to US, the next night. Finally, I felt and looked beautiful, without looking unlike myself--which is what I wanted (tho I'm sure she could make me up into any look I could dream-up!). Very talented make-up artist that is an expert at her craft. Snapshot: + fair pricing (worth more than she charges) + expert in field + attitude (professional and personable) + quality materials, products, tools + expert application + on time (arrival and for application) + great communication (pre, during, post) + clean/hygienic + customer service + can "BYOB" for cheeks, lips, brows or eyes - no touch-up samples (but you might like to have/use your own lipstick so not sure if this is a "-") read more
