I just had the most bizarre interaction over 90 seconds of dropping off items to be donated where the young man receiving the goods got approval from the senior older man and the next thing I know the younger man is staring me down as if he wanted to fight me because I suggested to him that one of the drawers he was taking, went to another dresser that he might want to put it with that dresser to which he turned to me and wanted to literally almost fistfight me in front of my wife as we were trying to make a donation. I am shocked at this behavior. read more

They charge taxes on clothes that under $175. 6.25% Massachusetts law is clothing no taxes under $175. They put all black together you have to spend time going through all black pants to find your size they could make it easier but they don't you waste so much time trying to find your size. I was told smalls are in front so when I got to Medium I thought the pants was medium but it was large it was mixed up. I want to start by saying I've shopped at and donated to this store many, many times in my last 8 years living in the area and their selection is ok -- hit or miss like any store dealing in used goods but I've never had an outright negative experience until last night. My three year old and I arrived at the store a little after 4:30, choosing Leeward Light over Goodwill because I know LL closes at 5 and I wanted to make sure it was a quick trip. He looked at the toys while I browsed books, and about 10 minutes after we arrived the staff made an announcement that they would be closing in 10 minutes. The store was fairly crowded so I hesitated to line up in order to avoid making my son stand in line behind 5-10 other people, but when the line cleared I told him he needed to clean up the toys so we could pay. While he was doing that, a (maskless) staff member came over to tell us that we needed to make our final selections because (I quote) "we don't want to have to sleep here." It was at this point that I checked my phone and noticed that it was NOW 4:50--ten minutes until they closed. So not only did they rush people out of the store by lying in their previous announcement, but now were being extremely snide as we prepared to leave. I want to add that I've worked in retail-adjacent jobs most of my adult life and I fully understand the frustration of patrons overstaying their welcome, especially on a Friday evening, but never in my life have I been spoken to this way, especially as the only person left in the store ten minutes before closing (no chance of being stuck there after 5). Even allowing that maybe their clock was wrong, the tone of "we don't want to sleep here" is unacceptable--a friendly, hey if you wouldn't mind wrapping up... would have sufficed. I'm sure that I'll be back here again soon but did want to warn people that the customer service only ranges from not terrible (i.e. they mostly ignore you) to very rude. YMMV. read more

A decent thrift store with tons of good stuff. This place is fairly clean, and well organized AND has reasonable prices to MOVE items and not let them sit and collect dust. Yeah spent a good 45 minutes looking and did not want to stop, and that was just with the housewares. I did not even bother with the clothes racks. Not sure what charity this ORG services. Was there solo, just browsing, and a woman who worked there (her name tag possibly said Sharon?) followed me around and made little effort to look busy while obviously watching me from less than 6 ft away at all times. Was exceptionally awkward, and I left much faster than I would have typically. On top of that, the store was dirty and generally the items are of poor quality. I stopped in today with my 3 grandchildren. Not 5 minutes after we got there my Grandaughter needed to use a restroom. She went up to the counter and was rudely told "nope, no public restroom." I asked to speak to whoever was in chargeI told her we just driven an hour to get there and (by now) she desperately needed to use the restroom. I was told we would need to go elsewhere. Mind you I have owned a business and we stopped letting the public use the restroom unless it was a child or someone really in need. I've always felt rules are for everyone, unless it involves a child who needs to use the restroom! Very rude, no need for that, poor business practice. read more

The inventory changes day by day. Or should I say hour- by hour? When I'm in the area I usually make a point of stopping in. Is it me? I have an issue with, "thrift" being attached to the name. Perhaps it's the area, but " thrift" to me symbolizes great savings. You may or may not find great savings here. It all depends. However, you WILL find nice & friendly staff - means a lot, a store that is neat & clean, and well- stocked. Was told it's illegal to try on clothing while I had tried clothes on over my shorts, which I don't even think is true. I've tried on clothes completely (not over clothes) in MA within the past few weeks. The rude volunteer even questioned if I had on anything underneath for my top. Personally, not an okay question to ask someone when they are buying things from your store and since it's so personal. I had a dress on when I was told this, so I just tried on another dress on top of the dress. The woman came back again and said I told you that you can't try things on. I hadn't even had the opportunity to take the dress off. My sister then went closer to the counter and the woman was complaining and talking poorly about me to her coworker. Horrible service and makes you feel very uncomfortable to be there. This used to be my favorite store and now I would recommend that you do not visit. read more

Be careful, not one person with a mask even though new data suggests virus can be transmitted even with vaccine. They aren't taking care of your health nor are other customers so I recommend another thrift store that protects. read more

Electric can opener mint in box -$5 ($40 on Amazon), Hoover Wind Tunnel vaccuum - $15 (just needed a belt!!), 2' X 3' beveled glass mirror with gilded frame - $10, 3 yds. upholstery fabric - $2.00...and I could go on. Unlike Goodwill, Savers (ugghh..ewww) things are CLEAN. All profits go to LOCAL charities such as Pettengill House, Jean Geiger Crisis Center, Community Action. etc. For example, they donated $80,000 to local food pantries in November alone! Love the ladies there...kind, helpful, hard-working volunteers. And the guys who take care of the incoming donations and work outside in ALL kinds of weather are just wonderful humans! I stop there pretty much once a week, because their inventory changes so quickly. Only complaint? They need a BIGGER BUILDING!! PS...they also have a store on Rte. 1 in York. read more

This place is way over the top expensive..it's supposed to be a thrift store. Also the woman who was there that day really should not be working with people at all. The young guys who move the stuff in and out are polite though. Not worth your time really. Terrible and does not seem kosher, something up with this place. Parking is horrific in the small lot too. Leeward Light is an above average thrift store. My husband goes in frequently and buys quite a few things. That being said, it used to be a fantastic thrift store, but for whatever reason, they stopped taking many articles of furniture and accessories that historically had been sold there and were unbelievable bargains. We bought several rugs there (needed to be cleaned but that is as it should be) but LL no longer accepts rug donations. We bought three or 4 bedsteads there (the bed frames, not mattress and box springs) but LL no longer accepts bedsteads donations. We bought at least two hutches, but LL no longer accepts hutch donations. There may be good reasons for those decisions but unfortunately, I think it discourages donations of full house contents which often include bedsteads, rugs, hutches, and other items no longer accepted by LL. So those contents are either bought by auctioneers or GOT JUNK not donated to LL because it's too much trouble to cull out what LL wont accept. I'm sure there are still good things there like small appliances and some clothing but the wonderful bargains are a thing of the past. read more

Best thrift store in the area. If you see something you think you want, don't leave it there. It won't be there tomorrow. Inventory moves quickly in this store because the prices are right. If isn't isn't too expensive I just buy it. If I change my mind later I donate it back. If you buy something electric be sure it works before you leave as they have a no return policy. They are doing great work helping the community tremendously with an efficient way to recycle and reuse and with the loads of money they donate. This is an absolutely great place to shop with a little bit of everything. Prices are low as you will find anywhere. Turnover is frequent and items are tested and clean. They take cash and credit cards and will provide a tax receipt for donations you make. Money generated goes to local charities, as well. I especially like electronics, such as computer stuff, stereos, media players, etc. Can't beat the prices. My wife and daughter often buy new or nearly new clothes here. There is furniture, household items, school supplies, office supplies, pet stuff, tools, books, dvd's, cd's, lamps, dish sets, knock knacks, glassware, fine bone china, kids toys. If parking is full in the front, you can park in back of the building. If you are lucky, you might get a chance to see Truman-the old gent that works as a greeter. Kory Sandman read more

I can not say enough great things about this place. It has a little bit of everything and then some! The staff members are very helpful, respectful, and courteous (which is rare nowadays). The prices are very reasonable, and I see new items every time I stop in :) The greatest part of buying anything in this store is that I get what I want/love AND help those in need every time I do :) If only ALL stores in America operated this way. I have been to this Thrift Store many many times, and every time its a new treasure hunt . After reading some of the posts, I decided to check things out. They are a 501 3c charity. They have donated over $1 Million dollars to local charities since opening 5 years ago. You can find all this out on the Attorney General's website. Also on their website Leeward Light Industries. I checked; they have a sign posted that says "All Sales Final" right at the register. I dont think they are doing this for their financial well-being, I think they do this for the financial well-being of others that are under privileged and need some help. So why dont you take a trip and check it out yourself. Then you can make your own decision. read more

AVOID!! RUDEST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! I purchased a loveseat here a week ago and the woman told me that they have a 48 hour pick up policy. I explained to her that I need to coordinate my work schedule and someone with a truck in order to help me out. She was absolutely helpful and said that was fine. I also called a few days later and left a message, because no one answered the phone, explaining that I would be there today to pick up my couch. When I arrived, at 4pm, I waited at the counter for 10 minutes until someone came to help me. When I said I was there to pick up my couch, I was told I was "out of luck" because the furniture tent closes at 3:45. I then noticed a sign by the door that said it closed at 4-4:30. I pointed this out to the woman and she said "well, once he's done back there, in about 5 minutes, he's gone" She also told me, in a very belittling tone, that I was supposed to pick up within 48 hours. I went back there myself and spoke to Drew, who was so nice and accommodating, and he still had a half hours work to do! He was more than willing to wait until my ride showed up, which was less than 10 minutes, so I could get my couch. Thank you Drew! To the women who treated me like a child, were not willing to help me, tried to get me out of their store as soon as possible and just making me feel so uncomfortable (they were also staring at me out the window until my ride came), shame on you. I spent my money in their charity and then I get treated like I don't belong. I will never shop there again. There are so many other charitable thrift stores in the area that have commendable customer service. read more

BUYER BEWARE is their policy, the owner said. When I tried to return a large toaster oven that did not work the rude owner told me NO WAY. Buyer beware. SHE ACTUALLY SAID "OUR POLICY IS BUYER BEWARE" ! They give you 24 hours to return items so when I asked where the policy was posted she said it was not...it was verbal only! I have been shopping there 3 years and even donated lots of things for them to sell. I have bought many things I didn't even need and donated them to friends and neighbors. I was left speechless when the rude owner (the husband and son seems very nice and I had chatted with them several times) was adamant about not letting me take another toaster oven in place of the one that did not work. After all, they get them free! Ostensibly a portion of the sales goes to charity but I surmise it is a very small part. The owner should be a little nicer considering her financial well being comes from the goodness of strangers who GIVE her things to sell. I imagine most of the money goes to herself and family. I wonder if their books are open? The employees are volunteers so there is little overhead. Amazing how someone can be so rude to someone who has been buying their products for three years AND donating other objects for her to sell. I will never go back. I heard from my neighbors they were unhappy with the same 'wife' who treated them rudely. They also agreed the husband and son are very pleasant. Too bad. I have volunteered for leeward light for 4 years and am now an employee and I feel like I need to respond to the negative review from John. We do have a no return policy because we are selling second hand items. We do test everything electronic that comes in and only put out items that work. However, it is possible that some items appear to be working, such as the case of a toaster oven. We don't actually cook something in it but we do plug it in and see if it gets hot. We do try and be accommodating to the rare customer that has an issue with a sale but again selling second hand items you can't expect something to be like new. I did look at salvation army's policy and they also do not take returns. I'm sorry that you had a bad experience with the cashier. Sometimes people have a bad day and anyone working with the public knows that it can be stressful at times. I wish you wouldn't judge the whole business based in one bad experience. After all you did say you had shopped their for 3 years so you must have come back for a reason. ;). As far as the money donated to charity we have just reached our 1 million dollar mark between the two stores for the past 5 years. And all of the money goes to local charities such as pettengill house, our neighbors table, heating assistance programs, and more. We do have many great volunteers but we also have employees who work very hard everyday accepting donations, sorting, pricing, stocking, and delivering and picking up furniture. I hope you will give our store another try because our customers really do mean a lot to us and we could never make the donations we do without them. read more

I love this place people are friendly.Truman the dog is a sweety he is the mascot. Lots of fun stuff to look at lots of good finds ...I don't know why people are saying horrible things but they needs to get a clue ,prices are fair and all the money goes to the community.If you don't like shopping here then don't go go elsewhere.I have found some amazing finds here and we donate bags and paper to them along with stuff we don't need anymore.I hate the goodwill in Seabrook their furniture always smells of cigarette smoke and it's a dirty store.I'd rather shop the Leeward stores in Salisbury and Maine.they accept cards and cash ...no longer accept checks because people were bouncing :( people have to ruin it for others that don't bounce checks. read more

I used to absolutely love Leeward and strongly supported them in both purchases and donations. In the past year they have really gotten above themselves in regards to both prices and donations. Prices for items gone up - and have skyrocketed for furniture. They are beyond ridiculous in terms of donations. I have had several friends have Leeward Light decline high ticket items in good condition based on some vague reason from a driver. They no longer donate or shop there. I just had a designer item declined. They need to remember that they are a thrift store - not an antique store or a resale boutique. read more

I have been donating here for quite a few years now. The items I drop off a in excellent condition. I recently stopped by to donate some items. When I pulled up, the table was not out, however, the side door was open. I dropped several items inside and as I was approaching with a bag of clothes, a young man came rushing at me and in a very aggressive manner told me that they close the donations area at 3 on the dot (it was approx 3:15). I said it was just one bag and I would leave it inside the door. He told me loudly and rudely that he would have me charged with illegal dumping. I walked out the door and left the bag to the side of the door. He then proceeded to chase me down and put the bag behind my car. I backed up (didn't) hit the bag and proceeded to the exit. He then ran after me with his phone and took a picture of my license plate. Really!!! This is very far from the usual way I have been treated there. Generally it is with great thanks, assistance and smiles. I was taken quite by surprise and left very upset. As I passed the front of the building on my way home, I noticed the sign out front only gave the hours of 9-4 weekdays and closed on Mondays. No mention of the difference in time for drop-off. I personally would not ever treat someone in that manner. Take the bag of clothes and ask politely to kindly come before 3pm next time. Apparently, this young man has been working in this location since the age of 14. He needs some guidance on how best to treat the public. In the future, I will be donating elsewhere. read more

I like this place and go there a lot. For a thrift store it is a tad bit more expensive than other thrift stores. Perhaps due to close proximity to Newburyport. It is always very clean and organized though, so the extra small cost is okay. Staff are usually very nice except when I went today. I asked if I could make sure a radio still worked before I bought it. I just wanted to plug it in. The store was very busy so I wandered around until there was a lull at the counter before I asked. The cashier barked at me and was overall rude. I think my request was okay and I was polite. I am shopping at a thrift store after all so I don't have money to throw away on broken items. She range up another item I bought as a $1 that should have been 25cents and then interrogated me about where I found a book --not sure why. All the books are in the same place. Sort of disappointed, just wish people could be civil. No need to be over the top friendly just wish she did not bark at me. I know she was reacting to the store being busier earlier but wish she did not take it our on me. read more
