The school's front lawn, planters and school garden are nicely manicured. It's a good inviting place for students and their family. My daughter was in TK (transitional kindergarten) with Mrs. Foley and TA Mrs. Kaelin. These wonderful women have gotten my daughter off to the right start. The TK class is gated off since it's the first building closest to the office and is split with a kinder class. It's near the school garden and front entrance and it's really convenient, trust me. The curriculum is awesome too! They learn lots with choice time, fundamentals, numbers/letters and cooking Friday just to name a few. The school community is inviting and welcoming. What better thing to have than moms and dads working together for their family's education. My daughter will be starting kindergarten soon and I'm confident and secure that Lydiksen Elementary has prepared her and will continue to help her grow as a student and person. Mr. Berg is the principal and good with the kids. There isn't a day my daughter doesn't say hi to him and he always returns the hello with a smile! Until recently, the school board had been mostly liberal and very welcoming of all sorts of kids and families. After all, 80% of this school is transfers (216 students and 2.9 million of the overall budget.) Only 20% (55 students and $700k of the budget) are from within the local area. The most recent board has a conservative majority and they are being influenced by and consulting the Moms For Liberty and other far right groups with religious undertones. It is making for a very tense situation. The board has started taking issue with the number of "outsiders" in the school (aka 80% of their budget and current community). They are starting to run a "back to basics" focus. In Feb 2024, the principal of 16 years has retired (the board made it clear they were after her job). In the most recent board meeting, right leaning towns folk started bad mouthing and name calling teachers. A board member accused an IT person at the school of doctoring videos and running "a cover up." Needless to say, this mess is taking more energy and attention than needed for a school (at least for the adults involved). With the principal leaving, it would be reasonable to think some teachers will leave and some of the "outsiders" will find another place with less drama. And, there's a recall going on. So before signing up do some research and google Sunol Glen School Board.

I use the word 'community' above because that is what it is. This school is K-8 and has a total student body of about 300. That is very rare for a public school and that is why many who attend the school say that it feels like a charter or private school. Now that said, I don't think you should expect it to cater to everyone's needs. While I don't know the details I think that's why some people who have had very specific requests or needs for their students felt like they were not met. At the end of the day this is a public school with programming and support for most, not all. For our family, we have been more than satisfied with our experience here. The teachers and staff truly care. We feel like they go above and beyond in not only providing a great academic experience for our kids, but also a nurturing one. The Community Club (PTA) Is active and does a lot for the school. Like any other school, volunteering and donations are critical. At the end of the day, you GET what you PUT into the school. The principal truly cares. She pours her heart and soul into the school and it shows. She also greets every child at drop off in the morning - honestly who does that nowadays? I remember witnessing that the first day we arrived at the school and that was eight years ago. She continues to do this and I think it's one example of what makes her and the school special. Other things that make the school charming: * There is a garden, and students learn a bit about how to properly grow plants and vegetables. The garden is named after a special student whose soul and legacy lives on * There's a nearby park where parents sometimes gather to have coffee and snacks on important school days. It's a nice way to meet others and have a chat * The playground is top notch. Mr Hoxie and the facilities team do amazing work to make sure that the facilities and amenities are updated and fun for the kids * The winter concert is adorable. We are experiencing an education environment we have been hoping to provide to our kid with an asynchronous learning style. At Acton, students learn at their own individual paces, together. Learning at their own paces, most of the time, but not always means accelerated. Sometimes, it takes a squat to leap higher. There are no teachers to lecture students on the same materials at the same time but guides to provide a guardrail to ensure students focusing on their goals each school year and milestones each session. We think Acton as a project-based progressive school. For example, in one session the elementary studio is learning oceanology. Students studied anatomy of gut and cleaned sardine, blew a tank of blue water to observe waves, created dioramas of coral reefs, and made dumbo octopuses by shredded papers. All of these are backed by students' own researches which were presented to their parents at the exhibition by end of the session. This review feels like overdue. We are very grateful to have an opportunity to learn and engage with Acton Academy. Kids need to feel safe, not judged, when they need more time to master a topic or make mistakes. They hold each other accountable to be kind, supportive, and inspiring. They bound with each other through music (taught by a musician), PE, and filed trips in addition to the science and art projects. Teamwork comes naturally because the students host seven exhibitions a year. In such a small community with ages from K to Middle School, everyone has something to contribute. I have to say the transition from a traditional school to Acton's learner-driven education model took our family sometime to embrace the differences. Now looking back, it was totally worth it. Part of me want to keep this micro-school a secret but I think it would be selfish if I do not share knowing other families may benefit from our experience.

I attended ACE for their after school program from 1st grade all the way to the 4th grade. When I first attended ACE, the owner was Kevin and Mrs. Howard ran the learning center. A few years later, Mrs. Bang took over as owner and ran the place. Currently she is still the owner and running the place. For the after school program, they offer free pick up service from both Ardenwood Elementary & Forest Park Elementary Schools. They can also do Warwick Elementary if need be, however most of their business comes from Ardenwood & Forest Park Elementary Schools. After they pick you up from school, you would first have homework hour, which consisted of you doing your school homework while getting assistance from a teacher whenever you needed help. After an hour, it would become snack time and you would get a little snack to eat. Most of the snacks came from Costco. Then after snack time, it would be learning time based on the curriculum they offered and based on your grade level. The after school program is from when the school ends to about 6 PM. I've also used this place for private tutoring, and summer courses to help me improve. It was alright, somewhat helpful. I've had the following teachers here: Mrs. A (Now works as a teacher for Fremont Unified School District). Mr. Fitzpatrick (OK) Mr. Philip (Second best teacher there!) Mr. Ray (EWWW) Mr. Lawrence (Best teacher there!) Mr. Mark (Awesome guy, pretty good). Mrs. Bang's daughter, forgot her name, was nice and helpful. Got tutored by her over the summer as well. There are a few other teachers, however I don't recall their names. At the time, the front desk assistant was Carlos, and he was super friendly and helpful, one of the best staff there. I liked him! The classroom has a life size play house inside. The kids bathrooms are connected to the classroom, so the kids can go as they please.
