LEASEE BEWARE. Be very wary about entering a life lease with Lions Village of Greater Edmonton…read moreSociety. The management do not address residents' concerns in a timely manner and do not respond to emails. When our family member vacated the suite, we had to hound the organization to get our loan repayment. When we did receive it, Lions withheld $5000 with NO justification or proof of the costs. They did not reply to our request for this information. There is no protection for the Leasee as there is little to no legislation for life leases. Life leases seem ideal at the beginning but there are many issues when ending the contract. Illness or death are often reasons tenants end the contract and we felt taken advantage of during a stressful time for our family. A David vs. Goliath situation. Get a lawyer to read any contract before you sign it and do your research! A condo is likely a much better investment where monthly fees are lower and you, not someone else, have control of your money.

My parents were residents for over 5 years at Touchmark. In…read moremy opinion there has been a tremendous and hazardous decline in residents' care in the Private Memory Care. You should know that given they are a private business they do not need to follow Continuing Care Health Service Standards. Those standards do need to be followed by funded sites within Alberta. There isn't a regulatory body that can hear our concerns and advocate for the residents there. As a result of the lack of proper systems and communication and because of sub-standard medical care our mother received we had no option but to move her elsewhere. I am concerned for residents/friends who have been left behind.

We would highly recommend Touchmark to anyone looking for a safe and friendly retirement community.

You need to know there are care problems here related to insufficient staffing and management…read moreignorance. The facilities and amenities are beautiful, the meals are great quality, and for this the residents pay a high cost. But the high cost is not reflected in the actual care provided for more fragile and dependent residents. Despite the service being advertised as being able to meet enhanced supportive care needs, the management has insufficient experience and expertise to understand what those actual care needs require in terms of staff and equipment. This is sadly not uncommon in elder care, but here it is pronounced. Staff advocate for better care, such as basic medical and first aide supplies, as well as more regulated nursing staff, but concerns often go unheeded. There is a culture of secrecy; if you speak up as a member of staff, you are likely to be targeted for trouble. Canterbury has a hard time keeping quality nursing staff for a reason. This all means that the most at-risk and medically delicate residents are not getting the care they need in a timely manner. One of the consequences of this is bedsores. No one should die of a septic bedsore. Another is if your loved one sustains a fall, it might be quite a while until a nurse gets to them if the nurse is busy elsewhere. Yes there is an Registered Nurse working 24/7, but that RN takes care of over 300 people at a time. It can take 10 minutes to get from one side of the facility to the other. There is little time to really provide CARE, there is only time to do TASKS. When looking for a home for your precious elders, look beyond what is visible, talk to the staff, ask around. The staff here are trying their best, but they are not well supported, which is always risky for residents.

In less than 2 years it has jumped to over $ 4000.00 a month. She is still living as an independent but they are now dispensing her medication. About 8 months ago she contracted shingles which were not noticed by staff but by me when I had her home for a sleepover to which they had no answer. A few months later I noticed she was slurring her words and had very labored breathing. I called the resident nurse and had her meet me at my moms room and after checking her over she said she was fine and all was normal. She fell down that night and when they called and said she had hurt her arm I demanded they call an ambulance to take her to the hospital. It turns out she had broke her arm in the fall but also had a stroke and pneumonia non of which the nurse had observed from Laurel Heights My mom spent 2 months in the hospital and then 2 more at a rehabilitation center. Laurel Heights refused to give my mom any credit on the $4000.00 a month bill even though she was not there for any of the meals or got any of the services included in payments. I made many phone calls to all levels of management and they all had the same response my 94 year old mom had signed a contract and their would be no refund. After the fall my mom could not go back to Laurel Heights as she now needs full time care and now they made her pay another months rent as per contract. ZERO COMPASION from Laurel Heights only there for the money and would never advise anyone to put a loved one in this facility.
