You need to know there are care problems here related to insufficient staffing and management…read moreignorance. The facilities and amenities are beautiful, the meals are great quality, and for this the residents pay a high cost. But the high cost is not reflected in the actual care provided for more fragile and dependent residents. Despite the service being advertised as being able to meet enhanced supportive care needs, the management has insufficient experience and expertise to understand what those actual care needs require in terms of staff and equipment. This is sadly not uncommon in elder care, but here it is pronounced. Staff advocate for better care, such as basic medical and first aide supplies, as well as more regulated nursing staff, but concerns often go unheeded. There is a culture of secrecy; if you speak up as a member of staff, you are likely to be targeted for trouble. Canterbury has a hard time keeping quality nursing staff for a reason. This all means that the most at-risk and medically delicate residents are not getting the care they need in a timely manner. One of the consequences of this is bedsores. No one should die of a septic bedsore. Another is if your loved one sustains a fall, it might be quite a while until a nurse gets to them if the nurse is busy elsewhere. Yes there is an Registered Nurse working 24/7, but that RN takes care of over 300 people at a time. It can take 10 minutes to get from one side of the facility to the other. There is little time to really provide CARE, there is only time to do TASKS. When looking for a home for your precious elders, look beyond what is visible, talk to the staff, ask around. The staff here are trying their best, but they are not well supported, which is always risky for residents.

A difficult group of us seniors to manage at times, I would think! I've lived here for more than 3…read moreyears. It's subsidized for low income seniors. Vista offers independent living in 16 different apartment complexes across Edmonton. Our building has a great hard working cleaner twice a week and a knowledgeable and very pleasant maintenance man. We've had many different on site managers since I arrived. The on site staff is in their office twice a week for half days. We're able to phone them with any extra concerns. The building seems well taken care of. Tenants plant the flowers in the front and care for them, making a very pretty entrance, and there's a gazebo in the front for smokers if they choose and others to sit in the shade and chat. The lawn is well kept up by Vista. The walks are shoveled in the wintertime. The heating is sometimes variable but mine was fixed completely the first winter I was here. The lobby, social room, and hallways are air conditioned, not the units. At least twice a year and occasionally at other times Vista offers a barbecue with transportation there at a minimal cost to us, and a lovely meal at Christmas with transportation and gifts, again at a very minimal cost, and most of us enjoy them. Communal living is not for everyone and unfortunately gossip abounds in certain groups. The apartments tend to be small but very nice. There are two wheelchair accessible suites, I believe. No smoking in the building and for at least 10 meters outside. The rent is a third of our income - our tax assessment for the year must be submitted to the office. The lease is renewed in September every year. Limited outside parking is available for a fee. No pets are allowed.

If you have a complaint, however logical, prepare for retribution from the management. On the…read morepositive side, housekeeping staff do a good job keeping the building. Maintenance staff do the best they can. The problem with Vista is the head office management.
