Any visitor to the beautiful beaches of Southern California knows the kitschy, brightly-colored lifeguard towers that dot the landscape for miles in any direction. And Lifeguard Tower 6 is no exception, standing as a lone, orangish-red (or reddish-orange) sentry just north of the Imperial Beach Pier. Occupied during the day by ruggedly handsome lifeguards, and standing alone at night to withstand the elements, LGT6 does its job humbly but effectively. I came to look forward to its many moods throughout the day, depending on the angle of the sun. I even got to see it in action once as one of the lifeguards warned some kids away from playing too close to the jetty. read more
