This is a review of the birthday party organized at Life Time Fitness in Sterling, VA. It is not a review of the gym, which I still like a lot.
The birthday party at this gym sadly did not meet my expectations. At the party we were having total of 23 children ages 5 and up. As the total number of children exceeded 20, we got 3 party coordinators. I was hoping that three young people could offer the children a great variety of games in the gym as well as make the serving of pizza, juices and cake a breeze. I was wrong. This is going to be a detailed review to help other people to decide if it is worth to have a party at LT Fitness and maybe to give the gym's management some valuable feedback.
Activities in the gym:
The party supposed to start at 2:55pm. At 3:10pm I asked one coordinator, young male (I could not find the other party coordinators) if we can start the activities in the gym. He said that he was still waiting for more children to arrive. I could not believe in what he said and I told him to start the party immediately - there were already about 15 children..waiting for a fun to begin. The planned activites in the gym were obstacle course and team sports (soccer). The party organizer split the children in two groups and for the next 15 minutes they were going thru obstacle course. I did not see other helpers, he was the only one running this activity. I think at the end the other your female joined him. The children were waiting in the long line to go thru the obstacle course (there were only two lanes for 23 children). I did not understand why they could not create 3 or 4 lanes. Standing in long lines was not a good idea, kids were getting bored and impatient. Then it was soccer game. Instead of splitting the kids into the smaller groups, they started the game on the 1/4 of the gym area with all the kids playing. It was a mess, kids barely could move, this small area of the gym was overcrowded. After a few minutes, the coordinators realized this does not work, so they decided to let the kids play on 1/2 of the gym. BTW, during the party, there were random people playing in the gym, next to the children from our party. I asked the coordinators to talk to them and ask them to leave the designated party area. How the kids could play safely when somebody next to them is throwing the football ball with his son or playing basketball? I think I should not ask for that, the party coordinators should take care of it without being asked.
It is enough about the games in the gym, overall I was expecting something much better. I can tell it was a lack of organization, nobody thought before the party how to planned everything so 23 children can have a lot of fun and play safely. Also, three party coordinators should be entire time in the gym area, not one or two (except of bringing the pizza and putting juices on the tables).
The party room:
It was dirty - dirty floor, dirty tables. I am glad I brought four table clothes with me to cover the nasty looking tables, but I soon found out it was not enough, I should have 5. The coordinators prepared only 20 seats for children, so after counting the chairs, I had to ask them for the additional chairs and table for 3 more children. Ugh! They should know exactly how many seats prepare! When the kids came to the party room, nobody prepared the gym's provided drinks on the table. They were distributing them when the kids were sitting and it was a mess. They served one slice per pizza per child and I had to ask them(again) to go around and serve more to kids that finished their first slice. They should know how to do that, it is their job. When the cake time came, I heard from two female coordinators that they were afraid to walk with the cake a few steps to bring the cake to the birthday children. I had no problem to do that, but I could not understand why these two ladies were saying that they afraid of holding the cake, it was not heavy or messy. Maybe it was their first time (?).
Overall, I am very disappointed at the birthday party at Life Time Fitness. I can compare this party to the other parties (for example Jumping Jacks) and it was a huge difference. I felt like VIP during my children's birthday party last year at Jumping Jacks. I did not worry about anything, two party coordinators at this place took care of 24 children without the problem, they were funny, smiling, playing with kids, and they were very engaged and helpful.
At the Life Time Fitness, the coordinators were helpless and kind of lost. I wish they could show more positive energy and be better organized. I paid for the organized birthday party, not for renting the part of gym and the party room. read more
