As a retired military member, I play this course at no cost. The Liberty Pass allows one free round per week. it is across the street from my house. Convenient and free! Awesome right? It is disgusting. The cart paths are rock tracks that rattle your teeth. Goose poop is the primary ground cover, even more than grass. the greens are almost never tended. if it wasn't free I wouldn't even play it and sometimes I avoid it anyway. read more

This course was my go to for many years. New management made the course fall apart. There's no rough there's no fairway. It's all the same length there's weeds everywhere and the pizza place is about six hours. It is really sad to see what happened to this place. read more

Horrible customer service on the phone. I received an email 40 minutes before my tee time that carts were no longer available for the day. When calling up I was told my reservation wasn't even in their system. After saying I guess I'll cancel I was hung up on. Also the course is not well maintained, there is geese poop all over the course which they do not take care of, and the driving range is overpriced. read more

It has been a few years since I tee'ed it up at Lido Beach Golf Course. The setting is really eye captivating as a few holes play along the Atlantic and there fore seems to always make the top 10 public courses in the NYC. My guess is that Lido Beach Golf Course receives this distinction due to the picturesque and panoramic views and the surrounding area, certainly not the pace of play. For some reason an 18 hole round has always taken 5 hours to play and in some cases a half an hour longer. The course is never in the presitine condition that it rightly deserves, as fairways need ore maintenance from dealing with grass disease and some areas that do not get enough watering. Not an overly demanding course as to length, measuring 6,868 yards with a par of 71. Be aware of the migrating Canadian geese during the end of summer weeks. Consistent players will like this course. Most of the holes are straight down and you can see the flag unlike most of Long Island with so many hills on the north shore. Greens aren't the best kept with so many geese in the area- that can't be helped because of all the water hazards and views of the water on many holes. Gorgeous views of the bay! Fun course. This is my go to spot for 9 holes when I get out of work early on Fridays. I've played here many times, and it has pros and cons. If you show up at a non busy time, which I find Friday's around 3 pm are not busy, you can get right out as a single or even a foursome. If you are a town of Hempstead member, it's $27 to walk 18 holes, as 9 hole rates don't begin til 4 pm. Sometimes you can cruise around quickly, but usually it'll take at least two hours to play 9 as there will be many slower groups out in front of you. The way they send you off is weird too, you go put your name in with the pro shop, and then they call you back in to pay when they are ready for you to head over to the first tee. Kind of strange. There are two janowskis hamburger stands on the property, one after the 3rd hole and one right at the clubhouse, and they also have an indoor 19th hole bar. You can walk, roll a pull cart, or take a motor cart at all times here. Making a tee time is highly recommended if trying to play on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday morning. The greens on the course are slow, and the place is overall not well maintained. Would be nice if they pumped some more cash into this place and got it in great shape, as the views are awesome, and the course has some length, tipping out at just about 7000 yards. A few holes play right along the great South Bay, with boats and cool views in sight all the way around. Apparently, there used to be one of the best private courses in the nation built in this same spot and bearing the same name. However, the current course that is lido beach is not the same as the one from the past, as it was demolished and built over some time ago. I'd say the back 9 is both more exciting and has better holes than the front 9, and is a bit tougher. Highlights include the par 5 16th and par 3 17th. The motor carts are also old, and the pace of play during busy times can be as long as 5 and a half to 6 hours. This is a good place to practice, as you can pretty much hit driver all over, and it's also one of the flattest, if not the flattest, golf courses I've ever played. It will also be cooler here than inland Long Island as the bay and ocean breezes are plentiful. If it rains, this place is wettttt, soggy as it gets. Pro shop is decent, they have your typical shoes (just had a special on Footjoy dnas when I was there), logo balls, towels, shirts, gloves, etc. For the range, you buy a token in the pro shop from the machine on the wall for $5, but the range is terrible. It's mats and irons only, and is located between the 8th and 9th holes. Really wouldn't waste my time at the range. There's a putting green right in front of the clubhouse, which is just as slow as the greens on the course. There's also a chipping green near the first tee. I believe the janowskis stand, which you pass after the 3rd, 6th, and 17th holes, sells beer, hot dogs, soda, water, etc, but I really don't know as I usually bring my own (which you're not supposed to do). There are some bad golfers here too, including true beginners and old ladies walking, try to avoid. read more

Quick review of my round yesterday at Lido. I have played the course a number of times, but not in about two years or more. We had a threesome, and we were all driving. A friend got us a 7am tee time thru Golf Now at a cost of only $50, cart included. For NY golf, that's a huge bargain. The course, on the other hand, left a lot to be desired yesterday. First off, we check in and head to our carts. Not a real starter, just someone there asking what time we have, which was second off the tee anyway. The guy proceeds to load my clubs on my cart. Not a problem, I can afford to throw him a few dollars, just didn't seem necessary at a public course in Long Beach, Long Island. This was not Pebble Beach, no need for formalities unless you're looking to hustle a few bucks on an early Sunday morning I guess. Again, not a problem. Same thing heading out. I'm on an important call with my wife, and the guy is standing there semi cleaning my irons. Threw him a few bucks but, again, not necessary here at a public muni on Long Island. The course was in bad, bad shape. I know we're right next to the water, and seagulls are abounding, but can you have your grounds crew at least make an effort for those first off the tee to clean the seagull poop, which was everywhere, including the greens. Am I supposed to use my $300 putter to swipe aside crap so I have a path to putt on? Very weak. I know it's early in the season, and nature is nature, but if you are taking early morning tee times, have the courtesy of having a semi clean course. I know it's impossible to have all the fairways clean, but the greens? Really? I've played Marine Park recently, which was in good shape and a links course itself. Bethpage, of course, was pristine, as was the tiny Kissena Park. My local course, Forest Park, I'm sure was OK, if not way overpriced. I will not be back here this year, maybe give it another shot in a few years. For real links golf, I'll stick to St. Andrews or Troon, thank you, which, as you can imagine, would never have conditions like it was here yesterday. read more

Town of Hempstead really screwed this course up ! Paid 126.00for 2 players could not get a tee into the tee box , rock hard . I've played this course on and off for 20 years this is the worst condition I've ever seen it . I will never play this course again . Middle bay excellent condition! Almost the same price but 100% better track and they actually have a cart girl every day ! Take my advice do not waste your $$ at lido beach ! read more

I have been playing here for 3 summers now and the reviews above are accurate. This course needs some love from a team that cares. I usually play Twighlight rounds because I do not see value in paying full wack at a course where management cannot get it right to run a rake through the bunkers once a day. I've been here at least 20 times and am treated like I've never been here every time. If your season is short then shouldn't you make an effort with every guest to make them want to come back. Expect a 5 hour round and for no one to care once you've paid up and left the clubhouse. read more

This was the second season since The Town of Hempstead took over and it is in the best shape that I have seen it in the 17 years that i have been playing there. Greens are really good, there is rough, firstcut and fringe that was previously lacking. Pace of play is still a problem if you do not tee off early. The range still stinks. The Lido Beach Golf Course is unlike any golf course I've ever played.. It starts as a tight, parkland course, plays at times as a windswept links course and finishes with target golf that will you remind you of Florida or the southeast. In order to be successful, you have to get off to a hot start, particularly on the front nine. The course starts with a par 5 that's reachable in two with a good drive and followed by three short par 4's that are pretty easy to score on. The par-3 5th next to the channel could be a signature hole elsewhere, but requires a near-bailout right as the prevailing wind blows tee shots toward the channel just left of the hole. The following tee shot is blind over water and requires safe placement. Closing the front-9 is a narrow par 5 575 yard monster into the (usually howling) prevailing wind with a screen right and driving range to the left. Reaching the green in regulation is a near impossibility and the chance of losing a ball is quite high. The back-9 is much more demanding, open and memorable. Like the front, starting well is critical with two moderate par-4's and a par 5 reachable in two with the stiff wind now behind you, but there is out-of-bounds down the entire right side if you're not careful. The par-4 13th is long and runs with the channel down the right side, an appealing target for the wind. Be careful with your approach shot as missing right just off the green can hit the down slope and get wet. The following 14th is short, but the fairway is only about 20 yards wide with water on BOTH sides. 15 is a par 3 requiring an accurate long-iron into a crosswind. The 16th, a relatively short par 5 may be deserving of it's own review. It starts with a drive over water onto an island fairway requiring many decisions. A long, straight drive will go into the water. Laying up too short requires either a difficult, long carry or an embarrassingly short layup to clear the water. Your second shot requires a long carry that's nearly impossible to hit the green with water on all sides. The best move is to tee off with a wood to the left, setting up a blind layup and get there in three. In short, bring lots of balls and pray. If your ball isn't wet on 16, good luck on 17th with a nearly 200 yard with a forced carry into a wind blowing into your face and toward the hazard. A bail-out right short of the green may be the best play. 18 mercifully doesn't have too much trouble, but is one of the longest par-4's on the course. Don't expect top notch amenities. There's a range that practically goes into the middle of the course (resulting in more lost balls on surrounding holes due to the confusion) where you can practice irons off of mats. They do have separate putting and chipping greens however. The course is pretty well kept, but the rough and bunkers can be unpredictable - some will say golf should be this way. The greens roll nicely with plenty of breaks (many have vicious pin placements), but can be slow and variable in speed. Because of all of the water and wind, bring plenty of balls and expect a 5 hour round. $70 to play on a weekend with a cart and advanced reservation if not a resident. read more

Played lido Tuesday August 30th tee time just after twilight prices began . Golf course is in good shape considering the hot dry summer we've had. Only complaint I have is that the pro shop was sending twosomes out on back nine in front of us as we were making the turn. We barely got the round in playing the 18th hole in almost darkness. I live in Bergen County, NJ and the trip to Lido Beach is not too long. Actually less than an hours drive. I had never played the course before but had heard some interesting comments about it. We played recently, on 11/11/2014. We had a 10:30 tee time and did not get off the first tee until 11:15. I inquired as to why there was such a delay and was not given any feasible reason. No frost delay, since it was 52 degrees in the early morning. This course has the ability to be a really nice test of golf but there are several things that prevent it from being an enjoyable experience. Small, short driving range, irons only. A starter that does not really exist. And Brant flying and walking everywhere (Brant are a member of the Canada Goose family). With all the sea birds around, you are bound to have droppings. Guess what. You cannot take a step in any direction without stepping in GOOSE SHIT. It is EVERYWHERE. OK, now for the course,itself. The front nine is fairly open with a number of short par 4's and a pair of par 5's, with the 9th being about 575 yards. A good tee shot puts you in a position to make par or a rare birdie on this hole. The back 9 starts off with two medium length par 4's. Then the water starts coming into play. There are a few forced carries over water, but other than a very peculiar 16th par 5, the holes are not that demanding. If you have never played here and you get to the 16th tee, you will have absolutely no idea what to hit or where to hit it off the tee. I somehow managed to birdie the hole after a luckily placed tee shot. The rest of my group made 6, 8 and 8. The course needs some positive direction. $70 on a Tuesday in the middle of November is not my idea of a bargain, but you live and you learn. The bunkers have not been treated or manicured in quite a long time. The greens, believe it or not, were in very good condition. They rolled fairly quick and were in terrific shape, outside of the goose stuff that you had to clear away. It is a very picturesque area, with a power plant on the other side of the water, connected to a beautiful landfill. Wait a minute.....was I still in New Jersey? Ha Ha. You might read that several of the holes run along the Atlantic Ocean. They DO NOT! In fact, you don't ever see the Atlantic Ocean while you are playing. Here is the nail in the coffin. It took us 5 and 1/2 hours to play. And from what I have read and heard form others at the course, this is the norm. Needless to say, I will never be back in Lido Beach. read more
