Lidl offers very cheap products, but I personally prefer to shop at Sainsbury's or Morrisons. The quality of their products is much better

I love this place! It is huge, has an amazing variety, is very affordable (some things are really…read morecheap). It's got everything you can possibly think you might need when preparing anything Indian/Asian. I love the spices and the spicemixes but also the fruits (I spotted fresh Jackfruit) and vegetables (of course very fresh, good and dirt cheap chillies), the Himalaya herbal toothpaste :-) , the weird drinks, the ghee, the huge bags of rice and the enormous collection of incense (again really cheap). The food and even non-food will easily make you spend an hour(s) walking around looking at all the different things they sell and make you remember the great food of India/Asia.

The infrastructure is there as it's large and has a lot of products, unfortunately it's the…read moremanagement ethos that filters down to the staff that lets it down. So if you are shopping staff are under such pressure to stack shelves quickly that they will continue pushing their cages with fresh stock into customers rather than wait a few seconds to let someone pass. Also on several occasions I have found out of date products, if you alert staff to it you always get the same response, leave it there we'll deal with it later. I don't know how many claims they've had to deal with for customer injuries or illness. Have observed that when customers raise issues with staff about products not up to quality staff look scared rather than empowered to do the right thing. Timidly they call management over who never seem to deal with the issue, it's always the customers fault somehow, do visit the store and you will see for yourself.

This Asda is great! They are open 24 hours during the week, so if your really craving something you…read morecan get it any time of the day/night. They also have pretty much everything! From clothing to electronics and obviously all the food you can think of. (No canned lychees though... when I asked someone if they have it they said: Yeah cheese section is right over there... hello? I am Swiss yes but not everything I want is cheese) There is also a pharmacy and an optician which can be really helpful too. I also love it that they sell fresh Indian food which is great for lunch (I work nearby). So yeah good place but usually too crowded...

Wal-Mart has never let me down (okay ONCE, but it was for a CD of the musical AIDA...and who in the midwest listens to musicals besides me?) and yet, Asda, you failed me. All I needed was cheap baby dolls for a halloween costume. Not even BIG baby dolls, just small ones to represent the Octomom. But, sadly, there was none of that. Only plush stuffed dolls that were like £4. However, it did redeem itself when I found both american popcorn and cheerios on sale. And let me tell you, Honeynut Cheerios will go a long way in redeeming something in my eyes. If it was closer (aka not a 2 hour busride from my flat) I would totally hit it up for cheap groceries. So, all in all, it was a nice reminder of home but just not the same useless crap that I miss so much.

When you go, you can pick up some staples and see what's there to inspire you to cook things you haven't tried before. You will also discover a little known fact: the couple who own the store will prepare you a fresh, lovely meal right there on the spot, which you can either take away or enjoy right there at one of the tables by the window. I went straight for the veggie bibimbap, which was topped with a perfectly fried egg, sesame seeds, and a Korean chili sauce to stir in. You can also choose a side item or two from the refrigerated section, which they are happy to heat up for you if you like (think dumplings, kimchi, etc.). I felt like family, dining from beautiful crockery with my chopsticks and chatting with the owner, who made me feel right at home. A perfect break from cooking. Thank you for the lovely experience - I will be back soon!

(forgive the bad romanji) They also have a little eating area where you can enjoy your uber cheap 5 Pound Bibimbap. The couple that run this shop are warm, and generous with their portions. Grateful.
