There are 3 wine tasting stations, each with about 12 bottles set up on it, they are all cool and futuristic looking but their purpose is simple, to let the wine lover try before you buy, to have access to such a large selection is wonderful and means you always leave happy - not because you have sampled too much but because you got something you know you are going to enjoy. O'Briens have also bought into the current price war with the supermarkets, this leads to some spectacular deals. My current fav is a bottle of black bush for 19.99, cheaper than a bottle of white bush!!!!

I blame fallon & byrne or Donnybrook Fair for starting the trend but I'm probably being unfair. Truth be told most of these places have been around for a long time - I just couldn't afford them (now that I think of it that bit hasn't changed much either), one such example of 'new to Q' but well established shop is Thomas's, a shop with the most amazing selection of foods, wines, fresh veg, breads, cakes, sweets and a deli counter. I am a sucker for those millionaires' squares - you know the ones with a shortcake base, caramel and a chocolate top? You see them everywhere and usually I buy them and end up dumping most of it because they are something easy to get wrong. True to form when I spotted the square in the cake section in Thomas's I ordered one, went back to the car and broke off a corner as I drove. I nearly crashed the car in an attempt to cram the rest into my mouth, spectacular.... If everything else in the shop is like that bit of heaven then my waste line is a thing of the past...

There are ample sitting spaces in the main shop as well as upstairs. They also serve food like tapas, sandwiches, and other snacks. There's even an expresso bar. The best part is that because they are a wine bar you may request a complimentary sample of a wine and then purchase the bottle and drink it right there. Many wines are even 20% off or right around €10 for a bottle. We stopped in because it was raining but ended up finishing the whole bottle and even contemplated getting a second bottle but the weather had cleared so we were off to continue our sight seeing. Dangerously fun but strongly recommended.

I was…read moredelighted when it opened up (it has previously been run by different owners and closed down a few years ago). They have a great deli and a fresh daily selection of baked goods. There's a good off licence too (popular with the university students because of the competitive prices). They also stock some good craft beers and some nice wines. The owner, Mr Yang can't do enough for you and the girls who work behind the deli are very helpful and always smiling. It is my local shop and I'm so glad because it's a great one! Note: their chocolate twist pastries are buttery heaven!

If you ever feel like experiencing how diverse beer can be, go to Deveney's in Dundrum, grab a selection of beers (e.g. German Schlenkerla Rauchbier, which decidedly tastes of liquid smoked bacon or the excellent Belgian Trappist Beer Chimay Bleue) and invite friends over for a tasting. They shall not be disappointed. For sheer bang for the buck (e.g. for parties) I would probably stock up at the regular supermarkets who can afford to buy large quantities and pass on the discounts, but for quality and new taste experiences, Deveney's is certainly my first pick. Plus: Very good selection of beers and wines, in walking distance from the Shopping Center on Dundrum main street, friendly service, good value promotions. Minus: As with any other off-licence, some of the better or more exotic drinks can be a bit on the pricey side.

The sign has been there for years apparently and bears no relation to the shop under it. The shop is in fact Goggins off-licence, a small but well stocked affair with some beer but mostly wine and a few mixers and snacks. Next door is a superb little Indian that charges no corkage on wine you bring in yourself - nice eh!?

The folk in Goggins are always helpful, and always have a few recommendations up their sleeve to suit your budget and your planned occasion or meal. Prices are not quite as cheap here as the supermarkets or larger off-licences, but they do good deals on rotation like 3 for 2 on popular wines. They seem to specialise in wine, but there is the standard array of beer and spirits for sale here too.
